This was a fine study guide, and I did pass my test on the first try. I bought it along side the actual required text, and I have to say I didn't use this one that much. It basically summarized what the required text was saying, and it seemed unwise to study from anything but the source. It did, however, have a useful list of dates that I needed to memorise that made it worth it. Also, the practice tests covered different information than what I had been studying from the official book's app, and I found that to be useful. The most worthwhile thing about this book was the CD of sample tests and questions. In the end, they were a life saver and some of what they covered was on my test that I may have missed otherwise. My biggest tip for those taking three test is that you don't reply too heavily on the practice questions. I studied hard and about 10 out of 24 of my questions were things not at all covered by any practice materials, so make sure you study it all!
If I could in good conscience give this book 5 stars, I would. But, as Goodreads tells me 5 stars means 'it was amazing,' I can't really do that: it is, after all, just a textbook for people about to take the Life in the UK test for citizenship or leave to remain in the UK. For that, it is perfect: in this collected work we get the full text for Life in the United Kingdom (the official book for the test), a study guid with advice from experts and past test-takers, and hundreds of practice test questions. In addition to all that, there are further tests to take on the publishers website, with free access to them for owners of this book. I haven't taken the test yet, but if my performance on the practice tests are any indication, I should at least pass. I'd recommend this book to anyone needing to take this test. My edition is actually the most recent one (2013), with some necessarily updated information.
As a relaxing experience you could probably get more enjoyment from licking walls but to pass the ridiculous and ill-concieved Life in the UK test (sadly, adopted from my home country, Australia. As an Australian, I apologise) then this is the book you want. All the information is in here and the practice tests at the back are great. Since the 2011 census, a lot of the information is incorrect but the Home Office can't be expected to change their test now, can they? All of this is explained in the book. It'll give you the latest info for your own curiosity but explicitly state which figures you need to learn for the test.
If you're consistently getting 80-85% correct with the practice tests then you'll be fine in the real test. I sat it and passed first time. £50 into the Home Office coffers but it's a small price to pay to stay in this grey yet amazing country.
