First, a thank you to the author J.B Wright for sending me the credit for the audio book. I thoroughly enjoyed the narration
Tears of Astoria happens in a galaxy far far a way in a time different from ours where gods, mortals, and humans still coexist. the story is told from Aislinn's POV, and, although I am an adamant believer that any Fantasy with Romance should never be one-sided, the one POV here actually benefits the story. 1- I wouldn't consider this a romance per se. it's fantasy with elements of romance, which happens in the third part of the book. for that, it was OK for me to read the story from one side. 2- Since the book is about Aislinn discovering herself and her origin, it was important to tell it from her side only and see her reactions to incidents and people around her.
but don't worry, we get multiple POVs in book 2 apparently
The story kinda reminded me of Greek mythology where we see gods interfering with mortals' lives, and the normal people succumbing to their brutal way of solving their problems or attaining what they want.
And like the Greek mythology, there is betrayal, conspiracies, tragedies, romance, and anguish while trying to figure out who you are and what is your purpose.
This book has officially claimed the title of my favorite read for this month. The love I have for this story and how badly I want to carry on. Aislinn has to be one of the most likeable and relatable characters. I thought the magic system was really neat and I liked the way the powers weaken as the lineage grows. Quite a few of the things we learn along the way while reading made my jaw drop, I thought they were such good plots twists and I was eager to see how it was all going to unfold.
If you like the idea of a girl being born of nobility falls for a boy that works as a serving boy for the family of the boy you have been arranged to be married to your whole life and the life that you were raised into burns down and you are basically on the run and you discover a secret place and learn the stories you heard about gods may or may not be true. You might like this book...a lot.. _______________ Reread with the audiobook:
I had the wonderful opportunity of being an ARC reader, and I am thankful for it. I am going to try and review without spoilers the best I can.
J.B. did a fantastic job writing this and being very descriptive of the world that's inside this book. It was like a movie playing in my head as I dove into this book, and I gladly went head first. I couldn't put it down at all, I inhaled it and left me wanting more.
There's so much that happens in this book that I had to have several emotional support quesadillas along the ride. There's a twist at the end that definitely threw me as I did not see it coming. I am trying not to reveal any spoilers, but it's so hard not to. Everyone needs to read it.
The book is well-written and sets the stage for an incredible sequel. Tears of Astoria follows a powerful woman whose world is transformed by her arranged marriage. It features well-developed characters, including DeLuca and Audrina. The lore of Stellera is detailed, and the romance between De Luca and Aislinn is well-executed. The novel follows three main plots: social unrest in Stellera, the Children of Astoria, and Erebus' fascination with Aislinn. However, I wish the plots intersected more clearly and that the chapter titles did not give out spoilers.
A little slow in the beginning. Main character starts off with a petulant child attitude. I wished the interactions between the characters could have been more realistic. I liked the overall storyline. Hated the use of "baby" as a pet name as it felt like the intimacy between characters was forced/fake.
✨️Magic✨️ ✨️Slow Burn Romance✨️ ✨️Multiple Realms + POVs✨️ ✨️Medieval Class System meets Innovative Tech✨️ ✨️BLOOD✨️ ✨️WAR✨️ ✨️SPICE✨️ Listen. There are two books I've read this month that wrecked me in the best way. The reviews are late because I needed to process them. Forgive me, babes, but here it is: Books 1 and 2 of the Astoria Series by @heyj.b.writes 💖
I met this author at a fantasy ball this year and knew I had to read her books. She was a gorgeous human, and her booth had me sucked in! I was NOT expecting it to hurt this good. If you're a gluten for fantasy punishment, like me, this is for you!
No spoilers but warnings and a brief summary. Books 1 and 2 both end on a cliffhanger. Book Three is in the works now! Aislin is a highborn lady in a world where class means wealth and power. You wither have it or you don't. Lowborn serve the highborn houses, think Hunger Games world style. She is engaged to her best friend, the heir of another house named Rhett. They were betrothed at birth, and she thinks this is the best she can expect from life. But she keeps meeting a stranger with striking blue eyes in her dreams. He keeps the nightmares at bay. One day, she meets him in real life, and everything changes. Enter the mayhem!
The first book takes you through the discovery of true identities, the connections between the gods' realm and the mortals, and the conflicts that will alter everyone's reality. The second book deep dives into the gods' realm and the stories behind motlrtals that are more than they seem. I was CRUSHED at the end of both.
I could not put these down! I need all the fan art, commentary, and extra content I can get! This series is so well written. I never felt like it was dragging or speeding over events. The character development and world building were top-notch! I was irritated at Aislin's reaction to (what I perceive as) severe violation of her personal autonomy, but that's a personal thing. I loved the freshness of an FMC that was not a physical badass but used her mind and her resources as her greatest asset. It's giving soft girl era, and I'm here for it! Just do yourself a favor and read it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tears of Astoria has been the most amazing and most beautiful roller coaster of emotions for me, honestly! Firstly this book has so many twist and turns (literally) it had me curling my toes in ways I couldn’t even think was possible!!😂 but genuinely this amazing story that J.B has written is thrilling, romantic, swoon worthy, magical/majestic, and last but certainly not least a hell of a good time. It takes you to so many places within such a vast universe and you remember the world build within a snap of a finger because it is explained in such detailed manner that you remember even where the candlesticks are on a table setting(not in an annoying way though because I know how that feels to read in an adult fantasy setting).Tears of Astoria is like a movie being played within my mind with so many breathtaking scenes and characters that make you feel emotionally bound to them to where you cry out of frustration, sadness, hatred and happiness for them(My cry count is 6 cries btdubs). This story has honestly gotten me out of a major book slump that has greatly hindered my ability to simply read and love what my eyes are taking in….yeah this book might put me back in one BUT I can gladly say that it was worth it cha-Ching😂 but seriously I really recommend this book to anyone who is on the fence about it or to anyone who loves a really nice fantasy setting with twist & turns and also a really bada#% FMC who will do anything for her amazing friends and for herself too because we love women who defend themselves up against all odds.(also the MC is *chefs kiss*).
This is a very excellent, exciting, adventurous read. I loved every word, which was crafted with so much intricate detail. This story was handled with so much care and love. J.B. really did a magnificent job with the world building and character development. I feel like I knew these characters and their homes almost intimately. And THE STORY LINE/PLOT!!! It had me read this 540 pages in less than 24 hours which is very hard for me to do. THATS HOW GOOD IT IS!! I could not put it down, I absorbed this book like it was a lifeline, like a woman thirsty and hasn’t drank a drop of water in weeks. Deluca is literally the absolute without a doubt best dreamy book boyfriend. He is literally everything I want in a man from the dark black wavy locks and blue eyes that will stop your heart with just a glance. Like mannnnnn all you had to do to tell me the description of the MMC and I would have picked this book up and ate him up. I’m desperate for Son of Astoria since I’ll get his POV 🥹❤️ I seriously can’t wait.
I started reading this as a beta but failed miserably by taking forever. I finally finished it last night.
Overall, I like it. It has such a sense of originality that seems rare among fantasy. You’ll read books that have similar tropes, characters, etc with minor tweaks like a song remix, but ToA isn’t that way. It’s something different and new and I loved that.
I loved the story. In fact, this book has one of the best scenes I’ve ever read. The direction the book is heading is like an adventure which is perfect for my need for escapism. And, as others have said, it is left on a cliff hanger but it’s T’d up perfectly for the next book.
So all that said, I felt like the ending of the book was drawn out a little too long. I found myself skipping lines trying to get through it and figure out what was going to happen next and then when it finally did happen, my mind was blown on several occasions.
I was more than wowed by this new authors debut novel!
The way JB built the world in this book truly had me feeling as if I was immersed in Stellera! This novel is not only filled with adventure and romance but it’s got interesting and deep characters that you can relate to even though they are living in a fantasy world.
I immediately loved Aislinn from the jump and was invested in her character and intrigued where Wright was going to take the story once you find out about how the fantasy world the fmc lives in functions. I enjoyed that this author didn’t just focus on the main characters and instead we are focused on a main core kind of people who have fled Stellera and are trying to figure out what to do next!
Like I mentioned earlier the world around these MCs is so well developed at times I found myself lost in this book and not wanting to go back to reality for even a second, this book ends on a cliffhanger and you can bet that I will be jumping on the book the minute I can get my hands on it.
Tears of Astoria completely sucked me in and still hasn't let me go. It's definitely worth reading just when you think it's going one way...everything changes and it definitely leaves you desperate for for book 2...
This book is so much more than just the journey of Aislin. Watching her grow from naive to fierce is beautiful. But it’s also a story of friendship, family, loss, gain, shock, and magic.
DeLuca is the absolute best and so sweet and caring while also willing to lay waste to an entire world for his love. **swoon worthy**
Ok let’s talk about the best story of love and betrayal and friendship and loss that has ever been written. When a book starts out by putting you so far in your feelings only to calmly coax you out of them and make you feel better with calmness and fluff then proceeds to rip your heart out of your chest while dancing a jig on the organ, then leaves you stranded and needing more!!! What sorcery is this!! For the entirety of the story I had no idea which way was up. Every time I thought I I had it figured out something came to know me off my feet. It was such a fun and entertaining read. The sloooow burn and angst the longing and wanton desire that radiated from these two from the first time they met ugh a thing of pure beauty. My favorite part of this book has to be the images that are on replay in my head. The way in which the author describes different scenes and places is superb and so clear it’s almost as if you close your eyes and you’re there in the midst of it all!!! I loved everything about this book, but please give me the second book before I go clinically insane I need to know what happens next!
This was more of a YA read and I guess I didn't realize that going into based on the event I bought the book at. Which is totally fine, a good mostly clean read is good! I almost DNFd this one though, I had such a hard time getting into it. It's very world building as well as an 'oh and then this' type of read. Which would also be fine as I know this is going to be a series so there are lots of little things to throw out before being able to get into the long term story. However for me personally I found it lacking in emotional impact and development for the characters. It's all very surface level. I feel I would have LOVED this if there was more inner depth of feeling for the FMC to feel her grief, anger, confusion, etc. The author herself is such a fun person, if you read this I hope you take this constructively. ❤️ And yes, I'll still most likely read the next installment. Because I still need to know how they end up defeating erebus.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Where do I start!?!? I was up way too late finishing this book because it was literally impossible to put down. If I had been given the chance or didn't need to sleep, I could have finished this book in a day, but of course... life happens so it took me longer than I would have liked. When I say Tears Of Astoria is worth the read I really mean you need to read this book like NOW because if you don't you are missing out on one of the best experiences in reading you will likely ever have! With well developed and relatable characters, a unique and easy to follow story that has multiple plots that flow perfectly into one another and a world created so beautifully it's like a movie playing in your head, I promise, you will fall in love with every aspect of JBs story and will be so anxious to see where it goes.
Tears Of Astoria follows Aislinn and her group of friends while they escape an extreme and life altering danger and seek out to find their safe haven, where who you and the titles you carry mean nothing. But when Aislinn discovers that the danger has found them, they set out to finish what was started to assure the safety of not only themselves, but also their newly found family. I wish I could get into more detail about what happens in TOA but to give it away would be to ruin the adventure and excitement and hold this book will have on you, and everyone needs to experience it in its fullest. If it hadn't been nearly 2AM when I finished, I would have started reading it over again immediately.
5 stars isn't enough for this book. JB has an incredible talent for making each and every one of her character so realistic and relatable it's as if you knew them just as well as if they were sitting next to you. With a history for each of them you can't help but love, or at least feel for even the terrible characters. While falling in love with Aislinn, Audrina, DeLuca, Rhett, Lysette and Iris and all the other characters they meet along the way, you will also be hit with not just one or two but MULTIPLE twist you will have never seen coming, constantly keeping you on your toes, turning to the next page and saying "just one more chapter" so many times you will loose track of all time. You will become submerged into this story so deeply that it almost will feel as if your part of it. So do I recommend this book? If perfectly worded world building, in depth characters and relationships each with a story and history, paired with a perfectly paced plot that is impossible to not love is what you enjoy to read them ABSOLUTELY YES! And if those aren't your types of things to read... then I still say you should read this book!!!!
Tears of Astoria is a truly captivating story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, needing to know what happens next, just to have your mind blown at the twist JB throws in there, making it so you, yet again, keep turning the pages. JB has a wonderful talent that the world needs to see and I can't thank her enough for giving me the chance to read and review her wonderful creation. I can't wait to see where else she takes us on this incredible ride through her beautifully created world of Katova and the realms beyond.
This is a 3.75 for me. I did enjoy the book and the cliff hanger it leaves on does make me interested in reading it. I think the author's writing of this book was really smooth and well-paced and I think the overall plot and story line was really interesting as well. I would say that at times the book did just seem one level where things didn't really seem to get really deep, and things were solved not necessarily quickly but I would say easily. I did like seeing the growth of Aislinn from naive high-born young lady to a woman of substance aware of the social inadequacies around her and then as someone who needs to fight against Gods who mean to harm her and those she cares about. I will say I enjoyed reading her relationships and interactions when it came to Rett and DeLuca and her friends as well. She is what really made this book interesting to read and I am really curious of what happens to her in the next book especially with the way this one ended. I think there were a lot of great elements in this book that made it enjoyable to read but I feel like there were missed opportunities to add real depth and challenges to the story and the characters experiences that could have made it more exciting of a read. Such as when they were breaking into the castle to unalive the guy who led the uprising and was unaliving all the highborn and the children of the gods. It just felt like they invaded the land and castle way too easily and were able to unalive him really quickly. While this scene was entertaining to read with a small twist/betrayal thrown in I just felt like it could have been more done to make it more heart pounding. I will also say that with the betrayal after the scene ended that was it. The main characters never struggled with the aftermath of what they had to do and who had betrayed them.
This book is about Aislinn as she leaves her boarding school to go to the home of her betrothal Rett whose family has been close to her family their whole lives. She is happy to do this as she feels she is one of the lucky ones with her arrange marriage as she knows and likes and cares for Rett which is more than most girls in her situation can ask for. As she settles into his family estate to prepare for her marriage and new position in life, she starts to realize there are whispers and secrets within the halls of her new home that make her curious and start to explore. She also starts to become closer to a serv that she feels she has known her whole life as his eyes are like the ones she has seen in her dreams as long as she can remember. However, her relationship with DeLuca starts to open her eyes not just to secrets in the house but also what is happening beyond its walls and in the kingdom. That a revolution against high borns like her is gaining traction and things are not looking good for the kingdom. But this revolution won't just being about a new world order it will also reveal that the myths they all grew up on may in fact be truth and they are in the center of it fighting for their lives.
“Don’t you understand that if something happened to you, I’d have to burn the whole damn realm to ash?” “Did you miss me already, pet?”
The book is told from one POV, the FMC Aislinn. I usually enjoy dual or multi POV, but I think that the single POV worked really well with the story. I enjoyed Aislinn learning about herself, her past, her abilities, and overall discovering the world around herself.
There was a lot of world and character building which I really enjoyed. Both the world and characters were well written and interesting. The characters seemed realistic and lovable.
The side characters were also interesting and helped move the plot forward.
There was a little bit of spice towards the end, but not much. Overall the romance wasn’t the main focus of the story, there were romance elements throughout the book, but it wasn’t the central plot point.
The magic system (or abilities) seemed unique. I enjoyed the characters learning about their abilities, what they are able to do with them etc. I also appreciated how not all of the characters were super powerful and how the power level depended on lineage.
This book was an emotional roller coaster. There were so many things happening and multiple plot twists. There were a few times when I was a bit confused and had to reread a paragraph but that might have just been me reading too fast 😅
The book ended with a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read the next book!
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
Oh my goodness, this book is stunning. If you want a fantasy romance book that you can get lost in, you've made the right choice.
Tears of Astoria is full of drama, secrets, action, and romance. J.B. does a wonderful job with world building and character development, immersing you into the world surrounding our main character, Aislinn.
We are introduced to Aislinn, our FMC, finishing her time at the school for young ladies only to be in an arranged marriage with a childhood friend. Aislinn grew up different and not accepted by her family. When arriving at her new home and relationship, she finds out not everything is as it seems and many mysteries lay hidden. Aislinn must face many challenges and make life changing decisions in a world full of power, desires, and secrets. While being plagued by nightmares and daydreams, Aislinn must make a choice before it is taken from her.
There is a fantastic amount of folklore and gods/goddesses within this novel. The amount of drama will keep you on the edge of your seat and captivated until the very end. Let's not stop there, though. The whole cast of characters is deeply entangled, making for banter filled conversations, several heated arguments, and steamy romantic moments. I have so many favorite scenes and characters, but I won't spoil the surprise and fun of reading this book for the first time.
Bottom line: If you would love a mature Percy Jackson and Red Queen, then this is the book for you.
Tears of Astoria is the first novel of what will be a series of books by J.B. Wright. I had the privilege of being an advance reader for this book, and my biggest regret is not diving into it sooner than I did! J.B. cleverly and creatively develops a highly detailed fantasy realms where her character development flourishes. J.B.’s descriptions of places and characters put you right in the story with them; you can easily picture where they are and what they are doing. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so forgive my semi-vagueness. The story is a dark fantasy with romantic elements. There are several plot lines playing out simultaneously: a lower-caste rebellion; an upper-class identity crisis; and drama amidst the gods realm. Within those plot lines, the characters’ personalities are revealed, with creative and exciting elements and qualities. There are many surprises throughout the story, all the way to the last few pages. The book ends in a cliff hanger that leaves you begging for the next book! If you like books in the fantasy and romance genres (think A Court of Thorns and Roses), you will LOVE Tears of Astoria by J.B. Wright.
I was lucky enough to be a BETA reader for this book.
If you want a lush and immersive fantasy without slogging through bricks of world building, this is what you need.
Stellera is gorgeous, with each new location being rich and diverse. J.B. is wonderful at describing the setting of each scene. I can feel the cold granite of the desk at Obsidian Manor and smell the sea salt in the parlor at Soleil.
The folklore and pantheon in this world is fantastic. Oh yes, there’s a pantheon, and it’s amazing to watch the drama unfold.
Speaking of drama, you have a huge cast of characters but each one is so distinct that none of them get lost. I definitely have my favorites (and least favorites, but I won’t get into spoilers here 🌈) and watching them all work through their secrets, lies, and challenges leaves me on the edge of my seat.
Bottom line, if you loved ACOTAR and ATLA, you’re going to love Tears of Astoria. Have fun. ❤️❤️❤️
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
4.75/5⭐️
This was such a well developed world. The story was amazing and i loved that we get three plots and the POV of different characters. The story kept me captivated and I could not wait to read more and more. The world building was so good and really well done, everything made sense and the descriptions were phenomenal. The magic system was one of my favorite parts and I loved learning more about it. The book has twist and turns that I could not see coming and that made the story an emotional roller coaster. The characters are really different from one another so it is easy to care and love them. The romance was so good and it honestly went in a total different direction that what I thought it would go. In the end this was a wonderful book and I cannot wait to continue this story!
Tears of Astoria is a unique new fantasy that interweaves multiple stories all wrapped in one adventure of world building, lore, and obsession. This book focuses not only on the main dynamic, but lots of characters and the major plot lines. Following three plot lines, you will be left with unanswered questions, so I hope the next book pulls together the loose threads. Previously mentioned by other readers, I also wish the chapters did not have titles because it does give away spoilers (especially the last one) and took away the surprise of the plot twists.
Overall, I did enjoy reading this debut novel and will certainly be reading the next book in the series. Happy fantasy reading!
I really enjoyed this book and the world building. I love that the name of the book is based on the lore of Astoria and the phenomenon that happens in Astoria every night.
I love that the FMC fell for the serv and not who she was betrothed to. I even liked how the characters were described in the book and how the characters were built and their powers.
There were so many twists and moments that made me gasp and I was in shock.
I did not like that DeLuca called the FMC "baby" just randomly and it stuck. I do not feel that this fit their relationship and it kind of gave me the "ick." I am super intrigued with Erebus and how the next book will unfold with Aislinn. I LOVED how he called her "pet" and how his personality has been unfolding. I think that Erebus has a better personality than DeLuca.
I loved this so much! Much different vibe then some of the more popular books out there right now, but I say this as a compliment. It’s DIFFERENT. While it has lots of popular tropes the book is different and unique. It doesn’t remind me of any other books. Sometimes it’s nice to just get lost in a new world without comparing it to others you’ve been to. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump and I immediately was drawn in to this book. There are times where the main character can get a bit annoying bc she holds things to herself that ultimately would prevent other things from Happening but overall I think it’s a great start to a series! Can’t wait for the next book.
I will start with the story of the title, Tears of Astoria, absolutely loved it!!
I was worried at first that this was going to turn into a love triangle situation with Aislinn being betrothed to Rett but I’m glad that storyline turned into something else.
The world building was done well but I feel like there was a lot going on all at once. It wasn’t a deterrent for my read but it made me go “huh” a few times.
Overall, awesome debut fantasy novel and can’t wait to see where book 2 goes
I am new into fantasy so I was worried I was going to have a hard time with the world building, but JB did an amazing job of teaching while still being very entertaining. I love the writing style of this story and I was surprised many times. The twists and turns in this book… chefs kiss I cannot wait for the next book in this series because that’s cliffhanger….. girl knows how to keep a reader wanting more.
I have definitely found a new love for fantasy and can’t wait to support everything JB does
The book started of very good. The story is very interesting. The characters are very interesting. Only thing I would say is to make this into 2 books maybe because it was very long and kind of boring around %60 to %80 ish. Maybe because I dont like characters talking too much with each other. Lol. Dont know. Other than that perfection!! I will definitely continue this series!! The ending cliffhanger was also perfection! ❤️ Its slow burn but insta-love at the same time. I know its weird but it makes sense trust me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️ (Lots of kissing and one slightly detailed sx)
This is the most beautifully written story I have read all year. It physically pained me to have to put it down when I needed to do other things. There were just the right amount of twists and turns. So many tears. The slow burn was BURNING! I wanted to punch several people. All of the emotions were felt while reading this book. I cannot truly put into words how much I enjoyed reading this book. I was genuinely sad when it was over even though I already had a Beta copy of book 2. This is one that I would LOVE to experience reading for the first time again. J.B. Wright really knocked this one out of the park and to the moon! Adventure, love, heartache, betrayal, AND SO MUCH MORE!!!
Wanted to take a few days to really mull this book over. I keep finding myself wishing to pick this book up and keep reading cause I desperately want to know what happens next! That cliff hanger really has a grip on me 😍
The only reason I didn’t go with five stars is I felt this book had A LOT going on for one book. I kept up really well, but some names or small pieces of the story I feel like I may not have retained as well as I would have liked (but that just means I’ll have to re/read 😉).
Low key I’m crushing on this whole daddy shadows situation. I cannot wait to see more Erebus in book two 😍😍
