This is a very good potted history of an important historical figure. It is ideal for children, amusing, fast-moving and well illustrated. MacDonald chooses the fun and gruesome details as well as the important events.
I studied this period at A level, but that was a very long time ago so I read this book as a refresher. It is a little slanted in places, I think, but only in the interests of entertainment. MacDonald is even-handed in his insults. I don’t think most of the major figures were quite as awful or hopeless as he presents them, but this is a caricature not a realistic presentation. It is a good place to ignite an interest in this period, or indeed to rekindle as I am doing.
Even if it is a book for children, I must say it was very refreshing to read a history book which is so funny but let say full of information at the same time. I enjoyed the Oliver´s diary and also cool newspaper articles from the times so long ago. Long story short - nice summary of the mad years of the UK history :)
I'm not the audience for this, I'm not a British child, I couldn't understand some of the slang and the attempts to be youth-relatable with the wart jokes swooshed by me. But I'm glad that it came up in my algorithm. This easily digestible narration of history with humor reeled me in like Philomena Cunk. I plan to complete the series.
Pengguling monarki yang mencetuskan pelbagai inspirasi. Cromwell 'bangkit' menjadi figura sejarah pada umur selepas 40an. It shows that it is never too late to do your thing.
Regardless of the fact this is aimed at children, it's packed with fascinating facts and is a gateway to more academic and further research. Old Noll's long been a hero, even if he remains a controversial figure to some. Comments on this subject did once receive some juvenile vitriol from a troll who was looking for whatever trolls look for... Well worth reading and part of the Dead Famous series.
Not engaging a writing as Mike Goldsmith's, I'd rate it with 3.5 stars. The plot jumps every now and then. Philip Reeve's illustrations are noteworthy and beautiful.
