Excellent book, although the Goodreads author attribution is wrong: this is not any D.E. King, it's (obviously) by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. This edition has additional essays and is edited by Kevin DeYoung. Lloyd-Jones is strongly opinionated on a lot of things, but in some sense it's refreshing, even where I don't always agree with him (at least not yet). He still typically makes a strong case for his view that is well worth considering. I'm a slow reader but I devoured this book in a week and used up a lot of highlighter because he is just so insightful! I'm not a pastor and this is directed at current pastors and those called to become pastors (and maybe more importantly, those who think they're called when they're not). But even as a layman, I found him to be very wise in most of his observations. And maybe if I'd pastored for 40 years like he did at the time he gave these lectures to seminary students, I'd see the wisdom of the other points I wasn't so sure of now. I highly recommend it, not just for pastors but for laymen as well. For most laymen, I dare you to read this and try to listen to a sermon the same way again. It will change how you appreciate good solid Bible preachers and their work as they care for your soul, and it will change how you listen to the sermon.

This is currently my favorite book on preaching. The Doctor clarifies the necessity of preparing the heart and relying on the Spirit over any technique or style of preaching that most books focus on. It is a powerful reminder of the primary role preaching plays in the ministry of the church and the joy for those who, by God's grace, are able to preach week after week. Anyone pursuing a calling to preaching ministry or currently serve in ministry ought to read this book. Others have stated much better than I could that you do not have to agree with all the Doctor says, but the main principles are timeless lessons for any preacher of God's Word.

Everyone who preaches, or just wants to learn more about preaching, should read this book. Sure, you will disagree with some of Lloyd-Jones' convictions but you will be helped in your preaching, and it will put a fire underneath you to preach, and keep preaching.

One pastor said this is a book you have to read once to disagree with it and then a second time to be helped by it. MLJ is clear in his convictions and preferences when it comes to his own preaching and the preaching he saw in his time. I personally loved reading from a man with convictions not just about what or how he preached, but about the entire life of a preacher. Sporadic reading of this book throughout the year made me feel like I had 15+ sit-down conversations with an old, faithful, and passionate preacher.
