I really wanted to love this book. It is my third in this series, and I still have not rated any of them above three stars, which is disappointing because I genuinely love the concept. An adult-leaning Disney retelling is exactly my kind of thing. Sadly, this one ended up being the weakest so far. 🥺

First, the tone at the beginning felt weirdly misandrist (Yep, I had to look up this word 😂), especially in the first quarter. I am not against people wanting to talk about gender roles etc. in a book, but a Peter Pan retelling just does not feel like the right place for it. If I want to feel bad about being a man, I will watch an Andrew Tate clip, not read a Disney story. 😒

Second, the book takes a lot of creative liberties. Expanding the world beyond the original is expected in these kinds of retellings, but here it went so far that very little of the original story felt intact. Sometimes the changes did not even feel necessary or logical. And because the “what if” premise happens right at the beginning of the original story, literally everything ends up being different, which makes the retelling feel almost disconnected from the source material.

Lastly, this is a smaller issue, but still something that annoyed me: the what-if scenario is stated as “What if Wendy first traveled to Neverland with Captain Hook?” But that is not the first change at all! The real butterfly effect starts with Peter Pan not coming back for his shadow. 😡

But no need to bash the complete book. I really liked the new bond they built between Wendy and Tinker Bell. It was sweet, cute, and felt very fitting. Tinker Bell definitely deserved more depth, and this book delivered on that. Getting a closer look at the pirates and Captain Hook was also a fun change. 😁

Overall, I gave it two stars. The parts I enjoyed were sprinkled throughout the story, which was enough to keep me reading (listening), but I was honestly bothered one too many times for it to deserve a higher rating.

This is a great book for readers who like strong female leads and a progressive feminist angle with a focus on Wendy rather than Peter Pan. It is not so great for people who want a nostalgic trip back to their childhood with a more mature but still faithful take on the Disney classic.

As a Peter Pan fanatic, I did enjoy the story. It could've been a little better, but that's my own personal opinion. I loved Wendy's character, but some of the story didn't really seem to be necessary. There could've been a more magical way of things to some of the plot. I was a little disappointed in the plot, but overall it was a good story. Recommended to young adults.
