A nice little book that gives a brief insight into the life and work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The book is a bit old so the quality of the plates are not great but the close ups are interesting. I think because the book is so small it could never do justice to the paintings. What sets it apart from other art books it that it gives the provenance of the paintings which is interesting on a historical level.
I can’t recall how Bruegel got back on my radar, but I loved the size of this art book (small enough to fit in a back pocket) and its inclusion of only full color plates.
While reading I realized that I had likely seen many of these paintings while on a trip to Vienna with my brother in 2001. Would be fun to go back and see Hunters in the Snow (among others).
A great booklet! A short chapter on the bio, another on his works and then a chapter on his critics. After this there is an extended summary of every work shown in the book, it's authenticity, some technical information and a discussion on the theme and date of the painting; this was very well researched and gave just the right amount information. I would have given it 5 out of 5 if it did not refer to his drawings in one of the other chapters and I quote: "...his drawing is similar in feeling to that of Leonardo...", for the author to have written such a remarkable statement one would expect at least one drawing in the works shown in the book...yes, you have guessed it- there was none. Nevertheless it is still a remarkable short art book.
