In this 14th book in a series featuring Sir Harry Mortimer and his American wife Kat Reilly, naturally the sleuthing pair come to the rescue of Aunt Lavinia in order to avoid a royal scandal involving the womanizing prince. This book is mostly fun than usual, as it contains several real-life celebrities as party guests.

Some nostalgia, an interesting plot, and some of my favorite 1920s characters: Who could ask for anything more? Well, I could, as the ending seemed a bit forced, leading to four stars rather than five.

Series: Mydworth Mysteries #14
Publication Date: 7/1/23
Period: Interwar – 1930s – Mydworth, England
Number of Pages: 160

I have read and loved each book in this series. They are entertaining, interesting, and filled with memorable characters – even the villains. They have humor and snappy banter, and frankly, Harry and Kat remind me a bit of Nick and Nora Charles from The Thin Man movies from the 1930s. If you want a quick, engaging, interesting read, you can’t go wrong with any of the books in this series.

Sir Harry Mortimer and his American-born wife Kat are summoned to Harry’s Aunt Lavinia’s house in the wee hours of the morning. As former spies for their respective countries, Harry and Kat are well qualified to investigate a murder – especially one that involves Edward, the Prince of Wales. OOPS! Any public knowledge of the event must be avoided – especially since Edward is the most scandal-prone of Royals. So, the victim disappears and the house party continues as if nothing ever happened – except there are now two new guests – Harry and Kat.

With a house full of guests and with each guest full of secrets, how will Harry and Kat ever sort through them all before the end of the party? Can they truly keep the fact there was a murder secret? With everyone playing musical bed chambers, nobody was where they were supposed to be – and since the murder didn’t happen where the body was found – who was occupying the room in which it did happen?

You’ll have a delightful time delving into all of those deep, dark secrets with Harry and Kat before you and they come up with the villain of the piece. Then, for an exciting finale you get kidnappings, hold-your-breath car chases, daring escape attempts, and a satisfying resolution.

I can definitely recommend this delightful book because it is witty, entertaining, and filled with delightful characters you will come to appreciate. While all of the books can be read as standalone titles, I would suggest reading at least the first book or two in the series to understand Kat, Harry, and their backgrounds. Happy reading!

"Dead of Night" is the fourteenth short mystery in the Mydworth Mysteries series by Neil Richards and Matthew Costello, narrated by Nathaniel Parker. Like the others in this series, "Dead of Night" is about 3 1/2 hours long, a good length for my purposes of listening to a cozy mystery to relax at bedtime.
This story is set at a lavish weekend party at the stately home of Lord Harry Mortimer's Aunt Lavinia. When one of the guests is murdered in the middle of the night, Lavinia calls for the assistance of Lord Harry and his wife Kit. In some of the other stories, the death is initially classified as accidental by the bumbling local policeman, and Kat and Harry need to first prove that it was murder and then find the culprit, but in this case, the presence of a fireplace poker next to the victim of a fatal and very bloody head wound makes it clear that this death was no accident. The case is complicated by the presence at the party of the notorious Prince of Wales and future King Edward VIII. In order to avoid a royal scandal, the murder needs to be covered up, but Harry and Kat still need to determine which of the party guests is the murderer and what the motive was.
This was a fun read, and I enjoyed it more than some of the other stories in the Mydworth series. I especially liked the inclusion of two notable historical bon vivants, the Prince of Wales and playwright Noel Coward, among the cast of characters. And Lady Lavinia's palatial home is a perfect setting for a classic murder mystery.
For a discussion of what I don't love about this series, please see my post on "A Deadly Match." I have, however, found that the narrator's rendering of Kat's voice has improved quite a bit since the earliest entries in the series. And yes, even though these are not my favorite cozy mysteries, I plan to continue reading the remaining few titles in the series.

Listened to it and as usual enjoyed hearing Nathaniel Parker. Number 14 of the series involves Royal intrigue! Prince of Wales Edward VIII (prior to meeting that American woman) drops by uninvited to one of Aunt Lavinia weekend parties. Lavinia ever gracious invites him to stay and that night a dead body is found in his room. Aunt Lavinia invites Lord Harry and the American Lady Kat - the Prince is very impressed by her - to solve the murderer. Number 15 may be a while as I can’t find it for free anywhere.

Another fun, cozy and easy read.

Aunt Lavinia is the best. She is the kind of "elderly" Lady I want to be. 😋
Once your in, you will devour the book like one of Maggie's meals.
The ending surprised me a bit, since I was still in doubt over the "Killer".
Both men where perfect for the job and since one was charming and the other wasn't I leaned more towards the other.
I was wrong...

Enjoyed!

Lukijana Nathaniel Parker.
Rakastin Nathanielin luentaa! Kuudes tähti sille, sillä tarina oli täyttä timanttia. Pitkästä aikaa tässä tavoitettiin synkästä aiheesta huolimatta tietty kepeys. Lopussa taas hieno huipennus. En arvannut syyllistä.

Fast paced adventure

Kat and Harry are called to help Aunt Lavania, great mystery and murder is the reason. What is going on and what if any does the Prince of Wales have to do with it?

Audiobook : Spotify.
Read by Nathaniel Parker.

The best yet, methinks! Although… to be honest it took me at least four tries to start. Oh so many characters to keep track of, what with Noel Coward and a certain royal thrown in the mix. A high speed chase too! Looking forward to the next one!

Another exciting installment! This one features Prince Edward. I did wonder if we’d see him in Mydworth eventually! I had to laugh when he referred to Kat as his favorite American. Not for long ;) Plus, a heart-racing ending worthy of the cinema. I do enjoy these bite-sized mysteries!

Love Harry & Kat almost as much as Nick & Nora Charles. All the secondary characters are a hoot & Nathaniel Parker gives excellent voice to all of them. Looking forward to working my way through this series. A newly discovered gem on my library Hoopla app.

More of the same in this book but another good episode. The royal addition was interesting. The “house party” idea, that seems popular in England, sounds like fun but only if you have servants to do the set up, cooking, and clean up. :-)

Really enjoyable

Another great read from Matthew Costello and Neil Richards. Like their Cherringham series these books are a great way to wile away a couple of hours.

Highly enjoyable as usual! These short mysteries are so fun that I recommend them to everyone. This one has a member of the royal family involved which makes solving the mystery even more difficult.

Set in the early 1930’s, Harry’s Aunt Lavinia throws a house party and who should show up but the Prince of Wales – he who is to become Edward VIII and take up with the scandalous Mrs. Simpson.

They really aren't bad books, but they are so short, that they can't really be great books. They are just nice, short lived and fast paced crime novels.
