Non-Fiction. True crime. The story concerns six mysterious death that took place in the small New England Town of Spencer, Massachusetts in the month of January, 1899. One of the most interesting facts involving these deaths was that the murder weapon was never found. In 1970 a revolver was found hidden in the walls of one of the authors, homes it was wrapped in old newspapers dated back to 1899. As the authors investigated the Prouty-Hammond mystery that had been talked about for nearly a century they discovered how their lived entwined with the murder vitcims of 1899. The authors show how a political cover-up was formed to protect the guilty, people of high stature with wealth and power. This intriguing thriller is for not only New England readers but also for readers everywhere.
I would love a rewrite of this book. The story itself is extremely compelling and gave me goosebumps at more than one point. Being a local will definitely make this book more interesting - knowing descendants of the Hammond or Prouty families (or both!) will make it even more so.
Overall, a very interesting book, obviously written by non-writers, that could do with a good polish and republish. Maybe an afterward with any new info?! Dying to know what ancestry has to say on the subject of descendants.
"This book is not only for New England readers..." ..but for Proutys to read, too!
I simply had to read this book, being a Prouty with roots in Spencer - the place of the noted murders.
This book is not incredibly well written, but that is to be expected - the author(s) are not professionals. The story of the mystery murders is compelling enough that you can read through it.
I thought this was a pretty good book. It is a little predictable, if you have any imagination at all. I liked it because it gives some history to the town I moved to. :) Yeah, I feel better knowing that the route I walk my dogs is through the heart of all creepiness. If you want a good story about a New England town, then try this one.
I agree this books needs to be rewritten and heavily edited but it does contain factual information with a proposed theory that makes complete sense. It was worth the read, even if it was cringeworthy at times.
As a local it was very cool to read about some big family names and their dark history in the small town of Spencer, MA. Liked the inclusion of old pictures, drawings, and news articles.
I read this book quite a few years ago, but I remember it as being quite intriguing, especially since these mysterious incidents happened in the town I live in.
