When Everything's Said and Done

Rate this book
Brenda, the brainy oldest of the Robinson girls, longs for a father and tries to win her mother's approval by being good in every way. Fellow college student Michael Dawson becomes her first reason to be bad, as she decides to win him--from her sisters--any way she can. Annette, the protected baby sister, keeps her eyes on heaven, reading the Bible and preaching the Gospel--until she develops an overwhelming crush on Michael Dawson, the tenant in her family's rental house. She had always dreamed of going to Africa. Now she dreams of Michael...as family ties sever, perhaps forever. Cora, the wild middle child and her mother's favorite, savors life by tasting everything in it, including men. A fire burns within her, igniting every life she touches...including Michael's. He is drawn to her like a moth to the flame. But who will get burned? Poignant and passionate, When Everything's Said And Done sends an unforgettable message about women's strength, unity...and the indomitable force of their love.

I loved this book from start to finish. Nevis, the storyteller was awesome. Her wit and charm was captivating. Her wisdom could not be matched. Eboni Snoe where have you been all my life? You are so powerful with the pen (I've got to read more of your work). Of all the messages given there was nothing as profound as: " ...as you get older the choices we make will become more serious and so will the consequences."

The story of the Robinson family is told with true grit. We know the story of a dream being deferred (meaning Laura's the matriarch of the Robinson family) because of love and children (not that she acknowledged regretting having her children). She played the hand she was dealt (raised her girls in spite of the father's inability to commit/ settle down. She wanted more for her girls ...but as with her, life happened for them (and choices were made that she did not always agree with but in the end...home was just that...home....and the Robinson girls were welcomed and loved.

Eboni created a piece of work that is a masterpiece. I will talk about this book to whoever will listen. It has everything: lessons on life, death, grief, love and forgiveness. I'll end it by stating something that was said in the book: God has laid out a plan for us. But, it looks like a maze to us. All of us aren't going to make the best choices for our highest good every time but the r's always another chance. I'll add a part: there's always another chance to get it right!. Annette got it right by doing missionary work. Cora got it right by settling down and giving back. Brenda got it right by acknowledging that she tried to manufacture love. Laura got it right but releasing her anger. Michael got it right....Warren got it right by loving in the manner that they could. Nubia got it right by meeting people where they were and loving them for who they were not who she wanted them to be. 2 thumbs up...a must read.

This was a fascinating read. Eboni Snoe tackles the Black family and all of it's complexities.... And I loved it. Honestly, I also loved the dialogue between the characters concerning Christianity; why are people so convinced that there is only one way to love God? That's another conversation for another day but I think the author handled the topic with great care. I lived Cora's character... She really holds the book together and carries the story. It's a sad tale but... That's life.

I really liked this book! I loved the writing technique and the back and forth. I learned a LOT about myself by reading this book. I could definately relate to one of the characters. Now personally, I liked the book a lot, based on my personality and my preferences. But it's not a book that I would go out and demand that everyone I know read. For me, it was a good enough read.
