Candace Camp is the New York Times bestselling author of over sixty books.
Her first novel, *Bonds of Love*, was published by Jove Publishing in 1978, under the pseudonym Lisa Gregory. Two pseudonyms (Kristin James and Sharon Stephens)and many books later, Candace writes under her own name Candace Camp and still loves creating stories.
Candace lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband and is the mother of Young Adult author Anastasia Hopcus.
I'm developing a love/hate relationship with this author. I rarely ever read a book where the story is not concluded. I dislike authors who trick you into continuing the story. But it's too late, I have to read how the villian gets his comeuppance. Curse you Candace Camp!
That all said, the story was good. It focused a little more on the romance than the first book. I loved and admired the h. She went through horrible experiences but stayed strong. The H was just sexy. These two had very good chemistry!
I do wish the author would have kept the h's funny "family" of thieves and her daughter in the story. I think she missed a great opportunity. Oh well!
Series: Lost Heirs #2 Publication Date: Re-release date 10/14/19 (Original release 7/24/07) Number of Pages: 379 ** 3.75 Stars Rounded up to 4 **
I haven’t read the first book in this series, but I’m definitely looking forward to the third since this one was delightful. It was well written and had well-developed and relatable characters. I liked both the hero and the heroine as well as the supporting characters. The villain didn’t get his punishment in this book, but I’m sure it is coming in the next – can’t wait.
Marianne Cotterwood has lead a very unique life. She was dropped off at a very austere orphanage at the age of five and was given the name of Mary Chilton. She was terrified, but soon made a friend, Winny, who would remain with her through her life. Her life wasn’t easy and she tried to work at an honest job, but when she was turned out without a character reference, she had to find other ways to support herself. Luckily, she was saved by a pair of thieves and they all soon formed a family of sorts.
It was Marianne’s job to attend the fancy parties and check out all of the valuables and the safe. Days or weeks later, the others would break into the house and rob it – using the information Marianne had gathered. That is how she came to meet Lord Lambeth – he caught her checking out his friend’s home – and he confronted her about it.
Lambeth wants to make Marianne his mistress, but she’ll have none of it. She intrigues him because she isn’t at all impressed by his riches or titles. Turns out, he’s pretty hard to discourage.
Winny gets word from a maid who still works at their former place of employment that two different men had been around to the house asking about Mary Chilton. Why would anyone be looking for her – Marianne hadn’t used the name Mary Chilton in ten years - since she was turned out. Then, strange things begin to happen. Are they accidents? Who could wish any harm to Marianne?
It is a fun read, but – given the timing – 22 years after the French Revolution, it had to be the Regency period. It was never plainly spelled out and given some of the clothing references, I had to wonder. There is a section where the heroine unbuttons the hero’s shirt and runs her hands over his chest – except – in that period, the man’s shirt was pulled on over the head and only had three or four buttons at the neckline. Also mentioned is the heroine wearing pantaloons and ‘undergarments’ that got in their way. However, during the Regency period, ladies didn’t wear undergarments of that type – they went commando. However, the light-skirts did wear them.
If you are looking for a quick, fun read, this is the book for you.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ar gali vienas žmogus apversti visą tavo gyvenimą aukštyn kojomis? Tapti ne tik dar vienu sutiktu gatvėje, o tavo gyvenimo dalimi? Gal ir jūs rasite atsakymus į šiuos klausimus perskaitę antrąją Dingusių paveldėtojų dalį.
Mariana Kotervud sužavėjo lordą Lambetą. Tik tai labai pavojinga jai pačiai. Ji puikiai išnaudoja savo grožį, puikias, aristokratiškas manieras ir apsilanko ne vienuose aukštuomenės namuose. O tada savo magiją jau pasitelkia jos draugai ir visi kažkaip verčiasi. Mariana kitos šeimos neturi. O lordas Lambetas gali sugriauti visus merginos planus.
Labai jauki, smagi istorija. Asmeniškai man net įdomesnė už pirmąją.
Be jokių abejonių „Pažadėk man rytojų“ rekomenduoju!
Second book in the Montford Heirs series. This one is the story of Marianne, who was brought to the orphanage at the age of 5, rather than alerting her grandmother that she was alive. Grandmother finds out 20 years later that she is alive and begins a search for her. Meanwhile the Cousin who is now the Earl of Exmoor and also the one who sent her to the orphanage, is also looking for her. He however, wants her killed so that it will not come out that he was behind the deceptions. Lots of great romance and steamy goings on with yummy Lord Lambeth who has Marianne pegged as a thief. Great plot, great action and actually had me tear up at the end. I can't wait to read the final book about the son, John (who I believe is the highwayman Jack from both books!)
I bought this book at a library fair to fill my summer reading shelf with low stress reading. What could be better than a story about an orphan brought up by family of pick pockets? Very low stress reading since it is a classic plot with likable characters, except for the bad guy, of course.
I really enjoyed this book. My only complaint is that Rosalind, Marianne's daughter, was not included enough. So I wrote an epilogue that includes her.
Rosalind and Justin were driving to the double wedding in Justin’s curricle. They’d been chatting the whole time. Well, actually, Rosalind had been chattering away; Justin had just needed to nod every now and then and say the odd word. The little girl was delightful company and they had developed a close friendship over the last weeks.
Now that they could see the church, Rosalind was so excited that she’d was bouncing up and down on the seat.
Justin smiled at her and said, “You’re going to be a beautiful made of honour if you don’t wrinkle your dress.”
Rosalind immediately settled down. She’d been staring at Justin with awe and love and hope in her eyes all morning. Now, a serious, worried expression was on her little face. She looked like she had something very important to say.
Marianne and Justin had explained how all three of them would now be living in Justin’s homes as a family. He would be Marianne’s husband. Rosalind would be his stepdaughter. She would always have a place in their home and … she was getting a pony!
Justin could not imagine what was worrying the child. Finally, Rosalind sat up straight, shoulders back, chin up, shuddered, looked Justin straight in the eye and said, “You’re going to be my papa.” It was both a statement and a question.
“Yes, I am,” Justin responded.
“May I call you Papa after you wed Mama?” Rosalind tentatively asked.
For a second the question startled Justin. Rosalind was to be his stepdaughter shortly but he hadn’t realized all the implications that came with this new role. He was going to be someone’s Papa, not years or even months down the road, but within the hour. This child would be dependant on him for everything, including his love. He would not let her down.
Justin reached over and pulled Rosalind close. He kissed Rosalind’s dark curly hair. “I would be honoured if you would call me Papa, starting right now.”
Lord Buckminster skipped down the church steps. “Hurry, up!” he said as a groom took the horses’ reins to lead them to the stables. “Marianne and Penelope will be here shortly.”
“Hi, Uncle Bucky! Papa and I are coming right now,” Rosalind said beaming.
Bucky looked at Justin to see his reaction to Rosalind’s announcement. Justin took Rosalind’s hand and walked past Bucky, into the church, grinning like a fool.
❗️Puiki knyga atostogoms! Pasižymėkite 😉
Marianne was left at an orphanage at a very young age and has no memory of her past. She goes through a difficult life and now has made her life stealing from the rich. Until she gets caught by Lord Lambeth, Justin.
From there we get their story. I liked Marianne well enough, although the thing that bothered me alot was how little she thought about her daughter. I mean she spent more time obsessing over Lord Lambeth than her daughter or what she was sent to do. And the whole scene under the mine? If I were to die, I would think about my children, not wish to feel someone else's hands over her body.. That was disturbing, a little.
Justin, although a bit arrogant, was easy to like. Even though he knows Marianne is a thief, he can't stop himself from persuing her and falling in love with her.
The story about her past wasn't explored very much here, unlike the first book. And really, I really want to see this Earl of Exmoor punished, instead of having a trail of dead people throughout the series, people who die conveniently without revealing much of anything nor getting punished.
I'm hoping the last book is better and there is a very satisfying conclusion to the series.

As with the first book in the series, I liked this book but dropped two stars because the men, despite their proclamations of Trying To Be Gentlemen, simply “cannot help themselves” and make advances on the heroines when they are 1) drugged and 2) injured. I know the women respond and that is supposed to make it consensual, but please, these are women who yes, are attracted to the men, but yes, also not in their right minds at those points and the “heroes” should have kept hands and other body parts to themselves. Part of being a gentleman _is_ controlling yourself. If it weren’t for those scenes, I would have given each book 4 ⭐️. I am heading into the 3rd book with trepidation. I think the author is a good one, and I really wish those scenes had been edited out. In _both_ books! How incredibly disappointing!
I really enjoyed this book. I accidentally read it out of order... by the end it was obvious that I would have known some of the characters along the way had I read the first one first, but it was readable as a standalone with the exception of the ending - clearly the third book resolves the overarching story. I found that a bit frustrating, but I'm definitely keen to read the third (having been introduced to the feature characters in this book and already loving them!) so I'll let that slide.
One major oddity that stuck out to me though - why was the main character never wearing a corset?? This had to be set sometime around 1810-ish, and corsets were definitely a staple under-attire then... so why in all the description of garments (and the removal of said garments...) was there an entire lack of corsets?
Great plot and characters but after reading all 3 books---the "baddy" gets away? I mixed them up and read the last one second after the first. BUT I did not see (or remember) that the baddy Exmoore ever paid for his crimes?? After reading the 2nd book of this series, I felt like "WHAT?? Where's the ending and the pay back of the bad guy?" This left me feeling cheated. I did feel it was a bit dragged out and really seems like a comedy based on the old silent movie--Perils of Pauline--she got tied to train tracks, and had every thing you can imagine done to kill her but she survived! IN both the girl's life--they went through perils that seemed a bit extreme to me.
OVER ALL I liked the books and laughed at times when I thought it could be a parody on that old silent movie!
I loved this book. Candace Camp brings interesting characters to life. This historical romance will delight readers with mystery, intrigue, vivid descriptions, deception, attempts at murder, and, of course, love. Follow Marianne Cotterwood and Justin Lambeths dangerous path towards their HEA. Will they make it? You will be glad to find out. I highly recommend this book by a gifted storyteller. Her books never disappoint. I really enjoyed this book and am glad to give it five stars. I was gifted this book and am voluntarily reviewing.
The main characters in this historical romance are Lord Lambeth who is captivated by Marianne Cotterwood, the only family she has is a bunch of pickpockets and thieves. Even though she cannot remember her life before the orphanage, she has grace and style about her that lets her mingle among the wealthy looking for valuables. Lord Lambeth catches her in the act but doesn't disclose what he has seen. Someone is interested in Marrianne's secrets and attempts to kill her and Lord Lambeth is the only one she can turn to. All in all a pretty good story.
I think I said after the first book in this series (A Stolen Heart) that I could not wait for the second and I was right. I am sure there are a few flaws in this book as in the first one; but I enjoyed it so much I cannot remember them. On to the third book; No Other Love!
Another excellent read from Candace!! This is such a great page turner with the romance sparking between the dashing Lord Lambeth and Marianne a lovely thief who has a past she can’t remember before the age of five and her cousin the Earl of Exmoor who is out to have her killed. I can’t wait to read the next in the series! I received this ARC copy and was thrilled to leave this review
I can’t wait to read the next one in this series to see what happens next.. great character. Just great story you will have to read it for yourself no spoilers here so sorry.
Well written Justin and Marianne are exceptional characters many trial they had to face with intrigue mystery and romance would highly recommend any of her books Justin and Marianne along with her cousin got their HEA
Įtraukiantis, jaudinantis, pavojų ir paslapčių kupinas meilės romanas, vykstantis XIX a. Anglijoje. Lengvai susidomėjau pasakojimu ir pagrindine veikėja. Tai antra serijos "Dingę paveldėtojai" knyga. Nekantrauju imtis trečiosios.
Candace Camp has been a favorite author for me. She writes so well. This is the second book in a series that has missing family and exciting plots. I can't wait to see what will happen in book #3.
Poor Marianne has been through the ringer in this one! I wish the handling of FMC being an SA survivor was better in terms of how MMC interacts with her physically at first but it never fully went into dubcon territory

Intrigue, romance, and mystery, this book has it all! A delightful mix of drama and humor. Compelling from the first word to the last. Highly recommend!
