The New Testament institute manual, The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, will help you get more out of your study of the New Testament for Religion 211/212 course. It gives historical background and explains difficult scripture passages. You will also find maps, calendars, time lines, and charts that will increase your understanding of the New Testament. This also makes for a great personal study guide.
This is a really nice and well-organized student manual prepared by the Church Educational System and published by the LDS Church. This particular book puts in the middle colored maps (Jerusalem at the time of Christ, the Holy Land/Mediterranean at the time of the Apostles, Paul's journeys), flow charts of New Testament chronology, an in-depth chart about the Book of Revelations, and Seven Churches of Asia.
This volume gives aid to understanding the New Testament and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Each chapter is a segment that includes an introduction, notes and commentary, and points to ponder.
The book is obviously written from an LDS stance because many reference and back-up evidence comes from the Church. These sources include the Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Lectures of Faith, etc. They also reference LDS figures like Joseph Smith,, Brigham Young, and Bruce R. McConkie to name a few.
I would recommend this book to aid anyone wanting to gain more understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thanks!
I’m not much for warm and fuzzy when it comes to studying the history of Jesus Christ and his ministry. There is a time and place for that. But in student manuals I find it annoying. When I am studying to actually study, I prefer to get my hands dirty with history and substance. This manual provided me just that. And was an excellent companion on my undergraduate years at BYU when I was taking several courses on the New Testament. It had maps and provided helpful context for many of the miracles and stories described in the New Testament.
So I have finally finished this resource guide. That also means that I have finally finished reading the Bible - it took 4 years to read cover to cover but I have learned a lot. I appreciate the incite that this manual gave. I liked finding out more about the authors of each of the books in the New Testament and their background information. I liked learning about details of life during the time of Christ. I enjoyed delving deeper into the life and teachings of Christ and how it affects my life. The final note in the back from Spencer W. Kimball regarding the Apostle Peter impressed me.
I loved this instructional companion to the New Testament. While the going was slow to make it through this book, it answered many of my questions, and cleared up a lot of my confusion, by drawing on historical and cultural aspect of the time which are unfamiliar to the modern reader. Highly recommended!
A wonderful step by step guide to the meanings of the events and doctrines which are contained in the New Testimony. Also we have discourses from modern prophets on the mission of the Saviour. This book also testifies of the Saviour's mission and that he truly is the Son of God and the role we must play in testifying of this truth.
It has been a joy to get to study the New Testament so in depth this year for Sunday School. Since I've been teaching Gospel Doctrine, I wanted to really study it besides just the manual, and so I read every word of this book. Great insights and interesting history!
I have really loved reading the Church Institute student manuals as I study the scriptures. The manuals help me understand background and cultures that explain the meaning of phrases and versus that I wouldn't otherwise understand.
I found this a very difficult format to study. The older kids and I tried for a while, but it never was a good fit for our study. I understand the reason for the format...and I might try it again as an individual, but it was difficult as a "group" study. There seemed to be no cohesion...
Read this many years ago in college while studying the New Testament. Lots of insightful commentary, and lots of scholarly info to aid in understanding the scriptures.
