This is not the first book I have read related to the 1492 explusion of the Jews from Spain; however, it does contain a few unique features. First, it is dominated by primary sources- not just documents written by Jews in the years after the expulsion, but also documents written by their Catholic oppressors. Second, this book focuses heavily on what happened to Jews who left Spain for Portugal.
The Portuguese monarchy at first promised them a safe refuge for a few years; instead, the king took Jewish children from their parents and sent them to an island to be converted to Christianity, and later forced the parents themselves to convert.
