First published in 1966, this paperback second edition came out three years later and was an early addition to my film book library and the first of many dedicated to the great comedian W. C. Fields.
An excellent guide to all of Woody's films with comprehensive coverage of his silent features, the shorts he made for Mack Sennett through to his classic comedies made for Paramount and Universal.

Each film gets full cast and credits listing as well as a first-rate synopsis, loads of terrific stills, and reviews by a remarkably wide range of critics from the era including Mordaunt Hall and Frank S. Nugent (NY Times), Otis Ferguson (The New Republic), Alistair Cooke (The Listener), and James Agee (Time).

Extra sections include a brief biography, an introduction by critic Arthur Knight, articles by Otis Ferguson and Heywood Broun and writings by the great man himself: 'Speaking of Benefits' (1923)and 'Anything for a Laugh' (1934).

And with more than 250 fabulous photos what more could one want, my little chickadees?

A marvellous tribute to a unique actor-comedian aka Elmer Prettywillie, Gabby Gilfoil, Augustus Winterbottom, The Great McGonigle, Harold Bissonette, Ambrose Wolfinger, Professor Eustace McGargle, T. Frothingell Bellows, Larson E. Whipsnade, Cuthbert J. Twillie, Egbert Souse, Mahatma Kane Jeeves, Otis Criblecoblis and The Great Man et al!
