Based on true events, court-ordered integration comes to a small city in the deep folds of the Illinois Ozarks It is 1966 and Darius Miller, our narrator, is set to finish high school in the white folk's house rather than Crispus Attucks High School in which his folk had attended for more than a century. His father is the former head basketball coach of the school but has to step aside as assistant to the Pharaohs of Karnak. Darius becomes manager, psychologist, and guru to a divided team that fights one another to begin with that in the end galvanizes Karnak, Southern Illinois, as well as the entire state.
