A Whisper in the Dark #1

You Will Never Know

Rate this book
Hunter Thorn is on the run, living daily in fear of discovery and retaliation from the mafia leaders he once betrayed.

Sanctum is a planet practically cut off from the rest of the galaxy, where ruthless people who can control the elements rule. The Emperor has turned his back on the people, more interested in lining his pockets than waging war against the Brumal mafia. Hunter once worked for the Snow family, but a threat against his sister forced him to choose a side, and in the end, he chose wrong. He's been paying for that choice ever since, constantly moving, traveling across the planet in an attempt to hide. But everyone knows there's no such thing as escape from a regular Brumal member if they want you, let alone from one of the Three.

Odin Snow, the Dominus of the Snow family, had everything taken from him ten years ago.

He's clawed his way ruthlessly back to the top, reclaiming his family name and their rightful place amongst the Brumal. Mostly. There's still his step-brother to deal with, Isa Frost, the orchestrator of everything unfortunate that has ever happened to Odin. And then there's Hunter. As teens, Odin had looked up to the older boy, had even maybe cared for him, but all that'd got him was a bullet to the shoulder and months' worth of bedrest while Isa stripped away his title and family home. Now that he's found Hunter again, Odin isn't above using old feelings to get what he wants. The plan is to use Hunter to get under Isa's skin. Odin wants them hurting the same way he hurt. He wants to see them bleed. At least, that's what he always believed. But what happens when it turns out what he really wants is Hunter in his bed, at his mercy in a different way?

On a planet ruled by criminals, does Hunter have a hope of escape, or will he be consumed by the very flames Odin Snow is famous for controlling?

Trigger This is a dark romance with themes some readers may not be comfortable with. This includes torture, dubious consent, depictions of violence, explicit sexual content not suitable for younger readers, and drug usage (though mildly shown on page). If any of the above-mentioned aren't to your tastes, please do not read this book. I have other Sci-Fi MM books available that are not considered part of the Dark genre that may be more suitable for you.

5/5 ⭐ What a blessed madness! 🖤

I don't know how to start describing this interesting mix of literary genres. Chani Lynn Feener is a new writter for me and to have found this book has been a stroke of luck. There are plenty of tropes I am deeply in love with ♥️ and all of them are in this marvellous book, yass! Hence, my five stars 🌟

You Will Never Know is the first instalment in a trilogy called ❛A Whisper in the Dark❜, written by the previously mentioned Chani Lynn Feener. This writer blends a diferent kind of genres and tropes, mainly sci-fi, fantasy and thriller what mades us to test a new style of crime novel ☠️

Hunter Thorn is on the run due to a fatal error commited several years ago. Odin Snow, the Dominus of the Snow family and member of the Brumal mafia 💀, is running after him along the galaxy 🚀🪐 and finally he gets to catch up with him. Hunter and Odin are Whisper and Shout, respectively. Dynamic which works very similar to ❛ABO dynamics❜, being the first one a kind of ❛Omega❜ and the latter the ❛Alfa❜. They recognize between them by blood sharing🩸, practice in which a ❛Whisper❜ gives part of his power to the ❛Shout❜ as a survival mechanism ✨

❝In the past, Whispers would have been taken as mates, protected and revered by Shouts❞ 🌒🐺

❝Shouts could drink blood of a Whisper  to increase their power for a limited time [...]❞ 🩸🍷

◾ Despite their biology, the main characters sharing an murky past which mades their relationship to go throwgh dificult moments: this is a dark romance and their love is plenty of troubles. First one is called Isa Forst 😈, Odin's stepbrother and *SPOILER* previous lover *SPOILER*. Isa rises up as the main antagonist of the novel due to his betrayal against his brother and the aftermath of it: the usurpation of power by Isa, who stole all what belonged to Odin and his family, and made use of Hunter to achieve it.

Positives:
✔️ The world building is stunning here  🌠 🪐   This is trully interesting mix between sci-fi genre and a main plot which involved mafia families on other worlds different from ours one 🛰️🌍 Plus, we have the add of the ABO with vampirical traits which mades this novel the perfect combo of tropes.
✔️ Odin Snow ♥️ He is pure fire, as a matter of fact, because he is a mafia boss who can control heat, yass! 🔥

❝Odin Snow was a Shout. He could control heat, had mastered his abilities at a young age [...] and become formidable opponent to the other Brumal heads

I also have a for spot for his relationship with Hunter. He is so possessive around his ❛Whisper❜ and I enjoyed it a lot ♥️ These two are slightly toxic by times but their relationship is deeply intense 🥀 I can't complain about it because we're dealing with the mafia. I can't expect jelly fruit candy, insted we have ❛guns and roses❜  🌹 🌺

✔️ Isa Frost ♥️ is the ice brother. He is a terrifying character who hides himself under an enigmatic façade 🥶 He gives me all the goosebumps  🥴

Negatives:
Sex scenes are hot but they can be counted by a hand. Clue: ✌️

❝You shouldn't tempt the devil❞ ❝I should [...] if I ever want to finally feel what it's like when you're inside of me❞ ❣️

❌ The book ends 🥀

In the end, I've devoured this book in depth ♥️ It was a great surprise found by serendipity!

Now I've finally got round to reading these, after I've often seen reviews that praise the first book but the others less so, I've been struggling with myself.
Chani's books are addictive and I always have to force myself to read them in small doses. So it's quite fitting that this series is divided into three books.
Anyway, the first book is very interesting in Chani's best style with wonderfully intriguing characters.
I love Hunter. Um, I don't particularly like Odin. But the dynamic between the two is terrific.

He groaned.
This wouldn’t do. What kind of psycho was he? How could he be this attracted to a man who locked him up? Who’d choked a guy on his dick in front of him?
What kind of sick fuck would watch that happen and sort of wish it’d been him instead?
🥀🖤🥀

I just hope Odin grows on me. Their story is definitely quite exciting. Also, the ending of the first book is so 🔥🔥🔥
I'm just glad I waited until all the parts were published, otherwise it would have killed me.

Overall though, and this is not a criticism, this book is not as impressive as all the other books I've read by this author so far. However, if the two following books aren't completely annoying, then I'm almost certain that I'll still read the new release of all three books in one book at some point, kind of as a re-read.

Odin Snow wasn’t a good person. He was the devil incarnate and if Hunter wasn’t careful, he’d get trapped in his inferno, forced to burn forever.

this was really hard for me to rate because i don't normally read Sci-Fi and let's be honest, i am here for the romance. but thankfully, the plot outside the romance was enthralling. i stayed up till 2am to finish this, till the point where my eyes were burning because i needed to see how everything was going to play out. the world was so intriguing, there is mafia, people who have powers, there are Whisper and Shouts (which you'll find out more about when you read 😉 it was like the author's own twist on ABO dynamics kind of), betrayal, revenge, and in all of that there is a romance.

“I want to consume all of you,” Odin said silkily, dropping his hands to Hunter’s thighs for purchase as he stroked back into him. “Own all of you.”

if the plot wasn't as strong as it was, i probably would have rated this lower. because the romance? i don't know if i can really call it that i guess? there was romance here, don't get me wrong, it's obviously very unconventional (which i don't mind because i love dark romance and these tropes) but this really only felt like a set up to the real thing (well hopefully). it was very slow burn and little things happened here and there which i loved but it wasn't quite enough to win me over fully. but i expected that since this is the first book of three. however, this book was a great start and i can't wait to see how Odin and Hunter's relationship develops more. i loved the possessiveness in this, to be honest i was hoping it was going to be more intense than it was. but again, there are more books to come.

now the villain, Isa. i hated him. which means he was a good villain right? 😂 i wasn't sure if i was going to like how everything played out with him being a previous lover and stepbrother of Odin, but i liked how it turned out and the reveals we got along the way were soooo good.

“You’re mine, Huntsman. To do with as I wish. To take,” another thrust forward, “and to touch,” he placed his hand under Hunter’s chin and tipped his face up so that their eyes met once more, “however, and whenever, I please.”

and the spice? there is only 2 scenes but the ones we got were hot and totally worth it. this is also kind of a second chance romance if you squint. Hunter was a bodyguard for the mafia 10 years ago before everything went to shit and he had a crush on Odin. my absolute favorite thing about this book was seeing how Odin slowly realized how he actually had feelings for Hunter as well all those years ago even though he had an arrangement with Isa. and that Isa couldn't quite give Odin what he wanted. but Hunter could. 🥺

So if you like:
🖤 dark romance
🖤 captor/captive
🖤 world building
🖤 lots of revenge and betrayal
🖤 touch him and die
🖤 slow burn
🖤 mafia
🖤 enemies to lovers

you'll love this. definitely check trigger warnings. now onto book two and i'm hoping it delivers.🤞

A lot tamer than I was expecting! I'm so used to this author having characters who just take what they want, sex included, that this was a shock to the system when there were only really two sex scenes between the MCs.

I liked Hunter and Odin but they did seem to be going round in circles and the plot was very repetitive.

Definitely different to the other books I've read from this author, but I'm intrigued enough to keep going.

It's also super weird to be reading about the Brumal and not having the Devils of Vitality around - I love the characters in that series so much, so the characters in this series have massive shoes to fill and it may be an impossible ask.

Nothing is stopping me from giving this book 5★ but my stubborness so I'm giving it 4.5★

(Apologies in advance to this shit review. I just want to go read book 2 because the cliffhanger was 🙊🙈🙊)

“You’re whatever I want you to be, Huntsman. And tonight, what I want you to be,” he stroked the pad of his thumb beneath the curve of the mask, directly over the rise of Hunter’s right cheek, “is mine.”

What I liked:
- the tension was exquisite
- the mutual pinning to both of these blind fools was ☺️👏☺️🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
- the possessiveness 🤭🥵

To be honest, I can't put to words why I liked this book. I just did. I ate it up and it what I needed to read because nothing is capturing my attention. These two fools in love are delicious and yummy and I can't wait to read book 2. I want their relationship to be stronger, their trust deeper and the all the hotness and sweetness these two create when they're together.

What I did not like (it's actually not that big of a deal):
- there was only two spicy scene 😭
- the world building did not at all make sense to me, but that's probably because I'm dumb 🤡
- whatever happened in the history of brumal makes me so confused my head hurts so I stopped trying to understand it.

Unpopular opinion:
- I like Isa and I want him to have his own book.

Initial review:
Sheesh. The cliffhanger is devastating. Thank hell book 2 is currently out

Tropes: secret identity, mafia, enemies to lovers, paranormal
Feels: 3.5/5
Steam*: 4/5
Kinks: rough sex, blood exchange
Angst: low/medium
HEA: no. This is part one of a trilogy. They get their happily ever after in book 3.
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content themes: murder and violence, on page sex with others early in the relationship, jealousy over Odin's past sexual relationship with Isa

When it comes to a duet or a trilogy, my review approach is I have to read all of the books in it before I judge. I do judge each book individually but I like to put it in context of the other books that complete the story. I'm not going to mention any spoilers from books 2 & 3, but just know I have read the full trilogy.

This is the story of Hunter who is 30 and Odin who is 28. They met when they were in their late teens. Hunter was a low newbie in the Brumal Mafia, his father worked for them too. Odin was a Dominus's son, one of the higher-ups. At the time, Odin was screwing his step brother Isa who is extremely possessive, obsessed with Odin, and the villain of the story. Hunter had a crush on Odin. And Odin was protective of Hunter, always making sure he got food and was on his personal guard and spent time on safer missions. Odin doesn't actually realize until the present that he actually had a crush on Hunter back then too. He thought he just had a soft spot and was being kind to Hunter.

Back when Hunter was 20, Isa blackmailed him into trying to kill Odin, as part of a power move Isa was trying to make. Isa threatened Hunter's sister Meg. Hunter failed at killing him, but did shoot him through the shoulder. Isa killed Meg. Hunter ran and has been on the run since. Often, he struggled with homelessness and hunger. He knew that he had both Isa and Odin mad at him. 10 years later, Odin has still been searching for Hunter to take his revenge, and he finds and captures Hunter. This book sets up the trilogy of their story. Hunter is secretly a whisper, which is a type of paranormal creature that complements and gives power to the type of paranormal creature that Odin is (a Shout). It's dangerous for shouts to know that Hunter is a whisper because his blood gives them power. Isa is still a threat to both of them and also to their relationship because he wants Odin back.

This was a good book. This author has really good world building. This book is pretty slow burn but there's a visceral chemistry between Hunter and Odin. And I like the nuggets of affection from the past that slip in and add depth to their history. And there's a good mystery and secret identity thing going on.

One thing that made no sense to me was how towards the end when they had sex, Hunter out of nowhere begged and forced Odin to cut him and drink his blood. Thus outing himself to Odin as a whisper. I don't know why he did this, it doesn't make any sense, it puts Hunter at a complete disadvantage to Odin. I know Hunter was drugged but the drug shouldn't have had that specific effect. The book ends on that cliffhanger of Odin finding out.

This book had a few typos. Book 2 was riddled with typos. Book 3 was free of typos.

Some notable moments:

"Odin had seen the love between those siblings, seen the love that Hunter was capable of giving, and while he’d been content with Isa as his lover, in that moment, something had shifted inside of him. He’d wanted something he never had before. He’d wanted that kind of attention, and since Hunter was the only one he’d ever seen capable of giving it… It’d been a no-brainer to his sixteen-year-old self. From that moment on he’d gone out of his way to silently keep Hunter as safe as he could, to draw him near without making it obvious."

"““It matters,” Odin insisted. “You aren’t allowed to hook up with anyone, understand?” “You don’t own me.” Hunter realized his mistake too late. In the next instant, Odin was on him, twisting them and pinning him down across the bed with his hand at Hunter’s throat."

"“I’m going to make you feel so good,” he said as he trailed his mouth down the curve of Hunter’s neck to his shoulder, “you’ll never want another person’s hands on you again. I’m going to ruin you, Huntsman.” The same way Hunter had ruined him. No one else was even slightly as appealing as Hunter Thorn."

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Between the Devil and the Sea was my 1st book by this author so I was thinking this would be as dark but it wasn’t. This book was almost sweet in comparison.

Odin and Hunter share a past. Odin has been searching for Hunter since he tried to kill him 10 years prior. This is a VERY twisty tale of betrayal and lust. Very intense. The chemistry between the characters is epically HOT 🔥🔥🔥

Truths come to light and it changes everything! Off to read book 2 so I can continue this journey…

another 5 star Chani read for me, is anyone surprised? why i have put myself through mindless novellas at the end of the year i will never know but this was such a palate cleanser and brain tickler. Odin sky rocketed to the top ranks of my book bf list as her feral ass mmcs tend to do. the plot hits as hard as the romance and even for a slow burn, this had me foaming at the fucking mouth, swear. dark romance + sexual tension = happiest me.

DNF at 28%. I did not realize this book was a trilogy. And each book is quite long. With the exception of the bro and the beast series/serial I haven’t really been in the mood for long books where it’s the same characters.

That’s what his life had come down to. Staying with the lesser of two evils simply because one wasn’t trying to murder him yet.

Many years ago Isa Frost threatened Hunter Thorn in order to have him kill Frost’s stepbrother Odin Snow and take over as head of the mafia. Hunter missed. And ever since then he’s been on the run from both brothers until he gets caught by a third party and “rescued” by Snow.

Isa and Odin are both “Shouts” meaning they have a connection to an element (cold and heat respectively) and the only way to increase their power is through inheritance from a blood relative or through the blood of a “Whisper”. Whispers used to be cherished and highly sought after but there are no known living Whispers any more…

This book sets up the trilogy and is equal parts unraveling what happened all those years ago as well as establishing where the pieces are now on this chessboard battle between the stepbrothers.

The romance is unrequited crush to enemies to captor/captive to ?? And ends on a cliffhanger when Odin finds out Hunter’s secret.

Despite it being a lot of information to absorb, it’s never dull or overwhelming. This is my second reading so I’m finding it really easy to follow along and definitely excited for book 2 where things really kick off.

“This position, so intimate, made his stomach tighten into knots and his throat close up. This was closer than the two of them had ever been in reality, but as a foolish youth, Hunter had dreamed things like this. Had dreamed about being close enough to touch the snow prince and to be to be touched by him.”

I was fortunate enough to beta read this. It is definitely darker work then the author typically writes so it is important to check out the triggers before digging in. I really enjoy dark romance myself, so for me this only skimmed the surface but with that said I still loved it! With the dark elements and some small fairytale retelling, and the fun sprinkling of sci-fi, I loved this world and Hunter & Odins path to love and redemption.

This book was soo good! Hunter tried to kill Odin. Now Odin is in charge of a Brumal mafia organization on an isolated planet. Hunter is almost killed but brought to Odin to get revenge. The worlds building here is fantastic. The Shouts and Whisper angle is intriguing. At first, I wasn't sure about this book. As I read further, I was enthralled by it and never wanted it to end. Odin and Hunter are so hot together as hate is a great motivator. I was not thrilled with the abrupt end but you can bet I will be first in line to get the second of the trilogy. I just want to read it all again. I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

If you want complex worldbuilding with your sci-fi mafia romance, this is for you? Not for me though. I forgot I got to 29% in this book and just…never picked it back up. I could be into this in audio but it’s honestly too much thinking involved in text form alone.

I had a lot of fun with this first entry! The pacing was great and Chani has a very easy-to-read writing style too. This is my first read from her, and I look forward to reading more! You Will Never Know honestly managed to check off a number of my favorite tropes here: friends to enemies to lovers, a good amount of sexual tension, second chance, a small dose of step-brother taboo in the past, a very nice balance of angst, all while it was set in a futuristic sci-fi city with some fun magic and also mafia/underground crime vibes too. I wish the futuristic aspect and crime vibes were stronger here, but it was still really nice.

I LOVED the dynamic between Odin and Hunter AND the love triangle-ish obsessiveness vibes from Isa was superb. 🤭 I'm not usually a fan of love triangles, and I think Isa's role here was perfect. He added a great amount of tension and his role as antagonist is great. The history that these three have together propelled a lot of the plot, and it was really fun watching how things unfolded. It was less of a mystery for the audience and Hunter, and more of an acceptance and realization for Odin, which is always great to me. 😊

While there were some small grammatical/spelling errors, that didn't deter me from finishing the book. And I'm still super excited to read the follow-up to this to see how things will move forward!!

Every time Chani brings something new out. I am immediately blown away by her creativity and the effort she puts in to her character structure.

You Will Never Know was in a league of it's own though, this book was flawless. The concept instantly had my interests piqued! Mafia romances are my jam, add in futuristic hotties? I'm instantly going to be a panting hot mess at your door! This did not disappoint in bringing the flames. YWNK is a goddamn inferno of morally bankrupt men, I just couldn't help loving. Not Isa though (🤢) that man is deplorable. He undeniably is man we love to hate though, major emphasis on the hate!

I will be on constant tenterhooks until the release of the second book in the Whisper In The Dark trilogy, because of course this phenomenal book has more to come. The characters are so multidimensional, with half of this book setting the stage for future events and providing an established backstory for the MC's.

The character/world building was next level Chani certainly went the full mile with this engrossing first installment. The second book can't come soon enough for me. 👌

Odin is the definition of a book boyfriend. He has competition in the form of a Huntsmen though. When I tell you these two are fire! You betta be prepared to be consumed.

You Will Never Know is a dark sci-fi romance and first book in her A Whisper in the Dark series. In a planet ruled by three mafia families, Odin is the Dominus of the Snow family, finally back on top after a betrayal by his stepbrother Isa ten years prior. He has finally tracked down Hunter, the man who shot him, and plans on taking vengeance. Hunter has been on the run after botching his part of the scheme. Now captured, he must face his truth and hope something of his old friendship with Odin is still there.

This book was a shockingly quick read and abruptly ends just as things come to a head. So be forewarned as I was not because it really took me by surprise when the book just ended just as something major happened. The cliffhanger was effective though because I really want the next book already.

This is definitely a dark romance. The relationship between mafia family head Odin and his captive Hunter crosses the boundary of consent and not just because of the uneven power dynamic. That aside, the romance honestly works and there’s definitely something there given their history.

Even with the sci-fi setting, the book ultimately reads like a thriller romance. And there’s even the added fantastical dimension of some magical blood powers of what the book calls Shouts and Whispers. I won’t get into it because of some spoilers.

You Will Never Know is a short gay scifi romance that is definitely dark and still incomplete.

Chani is winning my heart and soul with her dark and twisted books!

I'm totally up for this and much more! I believe this book holds all of my favourite tropes:

*Enemies to lovers
*Slow burn, but with huge sexual tension
*New worlds and powerful individuals
*Not true mates, but meant to be
*Possessive MC (Touch him... Scratch that.Look at him and die.)
*Plot with huge potential
*Violence and dubious actions are not for the greater good.
*Mafia and crime bosses
*Past forbidden relationships
*New worlds and magic powers
*I hate to love you
*Please don't when he really means yes.

So because of all of the above, i'm totally invested in the Odin Snow and Hunter Thorn story! They are truly from another world (pun intended)!

The aesthetic of this book is just insane, everything sounds so beautiful!

It's a slow burn, but we get some action, and the kind of action that makes you wish you could be there, peeking through a window and watching like a pervert... (I get that feeling a lot; maybe I need help... )

Can't wait for book 2 because that drug-infused information in the end just needs to be addressed ASAP!

PS:Book 2 has a extra story on Wren and I SO HERE FOR THAT!

Wow! What a start to a new series!

Odin and Hunter… this book is just the tip of the iceberg for their story. The foundation is laid and peripheral characters are introduced.

This book is like nothing I’ve read before. Which isn’t saying much as I don’t often read mafia type books, but the blurb for this one intrigued me. The unique world where the story takes place panders to my fantasy loving heart. The system of magic is a nice change of pace from standard elemental or other magic based powers.

The ties that bind Odin and Hunter together are complex and full of treachery, misunderstandings, and the unrelenting stubbornness of Odin. Their relationship is contentious at best in this book, but the chemistry between them is undeniable. The author did a fantastic job writing a story I quickly became invested in. While there are some slight editorial issues, overall I absolutely loved this book. Solid 4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was given a copy of this book by the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

The book hooked me from the very beginning.

I'm surprised by how well balanced the story is. The darkness isn't overwhelming as I thought it would be. The pacing is on point at least for me and maybe that's why i read it so quickly.

I liked how the author described the world. The details are enough at least for now. There are a lot of elements that i hope will be explored in next books.

The characters are very different from one another and easy to get attached to. Hunter is the one I'm most fond of.
The relationships between some characters are really messy but this makes the story more juicy.

The hate to love relationship was executed very well in my opinion. The tension was there in the very beginning.

The way this book ended just killed me. 😳

Chani’s writing gets better with every book I read. I got so absorbed by this book that I read it waay more quickly than I intended. It’s really well paced and I love the characters, as usual they’re all individuals (sometimes characters can feel a bit copy and paste) and the two MCs relationship was very well written out, the enemies to lovers didn’t feel forced.

Great world building and the ending! I had no idea this was a series, I went into it thinking it was another standalone and can’t wait for the next book now. A good dark romance with an attention grabbing storyline and enough spice to keep you reading if that’s your thing.

Read this after I saw Amy Voce review on IG and I’m so glad I did.

Loved the story of Odin and Hunter, it was dark but weirdly romantic at at some points. This isn’t a rushed story, and it made that ending really special as you were being built up to that point.

Love the possessiveness of Odin, and I enjoyed how Hunter really came into his own in this story.

Loved it, and cannot wait for next book as need more!!

This book was absolutely amazing. The perfect slow burn with a mix of illicit underworld mafia happenings to make it a page turner that even when it ends leaves you wanting for more. I honestly want the next installment NOW!

I love dark MM books. I crave them and Chani Lynn Feener satisfied my cravings with the You Will Never Know book. I enjoyed reading Hunter and Odin's journey together. Now I need more MM darkness goodness.
