Sloan Krause #6.5

A Brew to a Kill

Rate this book
It’s the opening weekend of the spring farmers market in the charming Bavarian village of Leavenworth, Washington, where the hills are alive with the sound of...murder. Includes recipes!
Sloan Krause and Garrett Strong are eager to showcase their latest offering—canned hoppy Northwest ales. They’re even more enthusiastic when Josh, a young travel influencer known for scaling peaks and downing pints, offers to feature Nitro’s new cans at the top of the latest mountain he’s set to climb. Josh’s A Brew to a View has millions of followers and should mean great exposure for Nitro.
But when Josh is found stone-cold dead at the local youth hostel, leaving a trail of breadcrumbs and brews behind, Sloan and Garrett will have to tap into their sleuthing skills to solve a crime that has left the picturesque village in a state of shock. Could the killer be a jealous rival travel influencer, an enigmatic hiker who has been seen around town, or perhaps someone closer to home? Can Sloan piece together this intoxicating puzzle before it's too late? Because if she can’t crack open the truth, she might just find herself crushed under the weight of a sinister beer can conspiracy.

Quick fun read

Another good tale by Ms Alexander. I always enjoy what Sloane is up to, craft beer, good food, family, friends and murder! An influencer strickes the wrong person the wrong way and ends up dead. Can Sloan help the police put it together??? Of course she can.

If I only had enough vacation time for the myriad of festivals in Leavenworth… I love every visit with Sloan and her friends; I learn so much about the area and beer. This was a quick, short read but that doesn’t mean that the mystery was rushed. It was still a complete mystery, full of suspects and drama. I was a little sad that there was only a mention of April instead of the usual full assault; she adds comic relief to the series. Can’t wait to see what they get up to next!

Sloan Krause is all set for the opening weekend of the farmer’s market. She’s working the Nitro Brewery booth with her partner in the brewery, Garrett Strong. They’ll be sampling their summer beers, pairing then with Sloan’s cookies, and selling their new six-packs and some branded merchandise. The entire town has been waiting to start up the weekly market again, and Sloan can’t wait to start selling and to do some shopping of her own.

Sloan had agreed to give some of their beer to an influencer named Josh. He was known for his posts enjoying a beer at the top of a mountain. But when he showed up at the market and got into an argument with a local farmer, Sloan wondered about how smart it had been to partner with him. But then she meets another influencer, Harper, who does something similar but with livestreaming.

The next morning, Sloan is met with a couple of big surprises. First, the influencers have attracted lots of attention to Nitro’s social media. There are lots of new comments and hundreds of new followers. And when she walks to Nitro to prepare for another day at the market, she sees the police tape around the hostel that’s popular with hikers. A quick chat with the police chief confirms her worst fears—Josh was killed overnight at the hostel.

As Sloan tries to figure out if the local farmer or Harper the influencer could have had anything to do with Josh’s death, she tries to figure out what the motive could be to kill him. She only met him briefly and wasn’t all that impressed with him, but is that enough to kill for, or was something else going on?

A Brew to a Kill is a short mystery in Ellie Alexander’s Sloan Krouse series that features a small craft beer brewery in the lovely German-inspired town of Leavenworth in Washington state. These cozy mysteries blend the beauty of nature with information about beer flavors and the brewing process with strong characters and well plotted stories. And since Sloan is known for the delicious dishes she pairs with the beers, each book includes recipes.

I loved this short visit to Leavenworth, to hear about the flowers and the market and the murder. It’s always fun to drop in on Sloan and all her friends and family there, and to hear about the deliciousness. A Brew to a Kill was lots of fun, and a great way to either get acquainted with Sloan and her world or to spend some extra time with her and her investigative skills for a quick trip filled with beer, pretzels, and homicide.

another Leavenworth masterpiece

I absolutely love this series from Ellie Alexander. Sloan is such a strong amazing woman and I am so happy to see her continue on her journey. This book shows us more of her relationship with Garrett whichI love and we also get a little bit more about Hans. I can’t wait to find out more about him as well.
Another tragedy hits Leavenworth and of course Sloan gets people to talk. With Garrett by her side this time, he is the one who gets injured. I also found it interesting that the hostel may be going up for sale. Will Garrett and Sloan add that to their B and B adventure? Time will tell.
I look forward to the next book in this series. I can’t wait to see more of Hans and hopefully a happy relationship will come his way too. I also look forward to more of Sloan and Garrett. It makes me so happy to see Sloan moving on in such a healthy and happy way.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery along with learning about the fabulous Alpine village of Leavenworth. Ellie writes in such a way that you can picture exactly what Leavenworth looks like and you absolutely will want to visit it.

I like beer and I like mysteries so that's why this series has caught my eye.

Sloan works with Garrett in his microbrewery/pub, Nitro. The farmers market is starting up again and Nitro has a table selling their beer and swag. Two influencers are in town and are happy to promote Nitro's products. When one is found murdered in his room, there are a couple suspects ... the rival influencer, the influencer's ex-girlfriend and perhaps a local. Sloan and Garrett set out to help the local police figure it out.

This is a novella after the sixth book in the Sloan Krause Series and I liked it. I've read the others and this works as a stand alone (there is enough background provided). It's written in first person perspective in Sloan's voice. There is some talk about beer and food pairings and recipes at the end. It was a quick light read and is a "cozy mystery" so there is no swearing, violence or adult activity.

All too brief visit to Leavenworth! The Sloan Krause books are the top of my cozy mystery series list, I just love the setting and beer/food descriptions so much. If only I lived closer to real town to visit!

This one is very short but still manages to develop a decent little mystery while giving scrumptious details on what Nitro has going in the kegs and kitchen. The victim is another tourist, and Sloan just happens to be a witness to several altercations related to him so of course she does her sleuthing thing and solves the mystery for the police chief.

I'm hoping there is a book 7 soon :)

This novella is another fun entry in the Sloan Krause series, which I find consistently engaging and entertaining. Because this is a shorter installment, it's tighter than previous books. The mystery is intriguing and I didn't see the killer coming, especially since there's not a lot of time for clues to be dropped and explored. Still, I enjoyed this quick read. It's always fun to drop in on Sloan and Co., so I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

A social influencer comes to Leavenworth supposedly to help promote some of the businesses. In the short time he is there, he has very public confrontations with two of the locals. There are also two other influencers in town that have reasons to dislike him. When he is murdered, which one is guilty ?
This short murder mystery is complete with multiple suspects , red herrings, and clues. Another great story in this series

I like this series by one of my favorite authors. Sloan and Garrett get involved in another murder in this novella. The descriptions of Leavenworth greatly add to this story. There were several suspects, and I was fooled by the real murderer’s identity. I’m always ready to read more Sloan Krause stories.

Great story with beer recipes

Not only are the Sloan Krause great stories with interesting characters and a wonderful setting but I’ve learned so much about beer tasting, brewing, and IPAs. I really love this series and the ongoing characters in this wonderful Bavarian town in the northwest.

This is okay, for a novella. It's obviously not as meaty as a full-sized novel. I still love Sloan and Garret together. The village of Leavenworth (an actual Bavarian themed village in the mountains of Washington) is accurately portrayed re: layout of the town, etc.

It was nice to rejoing the group, if only for a short visit.

I really love all the beer talk in this series. It is so thorough. This is set in April, which is perfect timing for me to read. It was a novella so short on the town charm and how lovely it is there in spring but it was able to pack in the fun of the farmers market. Lots of suspects. Would have loved some closure with Weber but hopefully that worked out.

I am a big fan of the Pacific Northwest, except for the cost of living. The countryside is gorgeous and the people are easy to be around, so I related well to this story. The characters are interesting, the plot is straightforward, and the premise is finding out who killed the young influencer man and why. The answers were difficult and a bit heart breaking. I definitely recommend this story.

Good Cozy Mystery Novella

There's never a dull moment when spending time with Sloane, Garret, and all the residents of Leavenworth....but who knew murder would be on the menu? When a visiting outdoor blogger has one too many altercations in town and ends up dead, Sloane puts on her sleuthing cap to help find the culprit.

Fun and fast-paced story that may be novella in length, but not in content. There's plenty of twists and turns and red herrings to keep readers guessing whodunit. And the descriptions of the town really have me wanting to visit Leavenworth, Washington. Hopefully without any murders happening.

A fast read

This story gets started fast, with tons of forewarning as to who’ll be killed and little doubt as to who the suspects will be. Still, it’s great to be in this little community again.
