📚THE STORY📚
After getting pregnant at seventeen, Hannah is now raising her teenage daughter Desiree in her small town of Crystal Creek. She works multiple jobs to make ends meet while keeping an eye on Desiree.
Trey is a pastor traveling with his two teenage kids after losing their mother to cancer. Their plan is to see lots of the American West before the school year starts, but when they wind up in Crystal Creek, they keep finding more and more reasons to stay.
As the kids develop friendships and the local church starts to scout Trey as a potential hire, Hannah and Trey spark up a connection. After Hannah is injured and Trey steps up to help her, they only get more close. But she worries about her past as a single mom sullying his reputation, and Trey isn't sure what God has in store for his future.
💕THE ROMANCE💕
This is definitely a long, slow burn! Hannah and Trey get along from the start, bonding over their kids, connecting as adults, and showing up for each other as Hannah recovers from her injury and Trey learns his way around town. But even though there are sparks of attraction between them, they both have reasons to hold themselves back. Even when they spend time together alone under the guise of a date, there's not much romance until the very end.
Because Trey is wealthy and Hannah is struggling with her injury, there are some thoughtful gestures that have romantic tinges despite the characters strongly resisting it. As Trey cares for Hannah and the two start to blend their family thanks to the kids becoming friends, they have plenty of opportunities to get to know each other and relax in one another's company.
✝️FAITH ELEMENTS✝️
Trey is a pastor, so church life is central to the story. He and his kids visit a local church and get connected to the community there via Bible studies and youth group. Trey preaches multiple times, though the text does not include his sermons, only their general themes.
There is a strong focus on trying to discern and follow God's leading for one's life. Trey talks often about praying before making decisions, and his backstory includes a major leap of faith based on what he believed God was calling him to. We don't typically see the specific content of the prayers or how the characters experience and understand God's leading, but rather the aftermath of this reflection.
Because Hannah got pregnant as an unwed teenager, her shame about this dominates much of her storyline. Concerns about sin, purity, and sullied reputations are front and center. Through her connection with Trey, she learns about God's unconditional forgiveness and God's call to her to stop defining herself by her shame and fear of what others will think.
📝MY THOUGHTS📝
How many of us remember being a kid and making friends on vacation? I loved how this book captured that experience of getting close with someone else quickly, falling into their world and joining up families in an attempt to spend more time together. I'm still friends with a girl I met at the beach as an elementary schooler! And now, I'm a foster parent to teenagers, so I enjoyed seeing how the kids positively influence each other in everything from church involvement to work ethic.
