Barbara Cartland romances are light puffs of fluff, sans any IMAGINING of sex, practically. They are sweet, and easy to read-- think of them as a mini creampuff of a book and you get the idea. She *did* do descriptions nicely, and liked popping in snippets of history, a nice frosting on the creampuff. :D

The Marquis in this one is bored, irresponsible and wild. He decides to get married to his mistress because his younger brother and presumptive heir, is acting up.

Thankfully a good friend of his manages to dissuade him for now. However, they decide to go ahead with the planned midnight steeplechase, all participants being required to make a will.

All goes well except, that soon after, one of the winners, the Marquis neighbor, dies of a heart attack. In his will, which was legal and witnessed he appoints the Marquis as guardian of his daughter.

The Marquis now goes to assume his duties and see about the girl. He is surprised not only at the beauty of the daughter, but at the hatred he sees in her eyes. She blames him for her father’s death. She berates him for his attitude and takes him to task about neglecting his duties to the estate, to the farmers and tenants. Since she has lived her whole life in the area she knows the people from there. Apparently, the Marquis has been an absentee landlord.

The Marquis starts by hiring a new manager, and looking into all the issues the daughter has brought up. He tries to convince her that she needs a chaperone and a season in London, but the heroine declines and just wants to remain in her home.

Then one day when she is in his house, they rescue a climbing boy. The little children who unscrupulous chimney sweeps would use to go up the chimneys. The heroine is convinced, that the little boy has been kidnapped from his family, he is crying and obviously scared of the nasty chimney sweep boss. The Marquis pays off the nasty chimney sweep for the boy.

The heroine convinces the Marquis to look into the plight of these little children. Slowly but surely she always seems to make him do what she wants and take up causes that she believes in. 😉 The Marquis tries to refuse, he isnt really the responsible type, but since she is beautiful its easy for her to twist him around her finger, and he cant seem to help himself.

The younger brother finds out that the Marquis may have been paying a little too much attention to his new ward, so gets into cahoots w the nasty chimney sweep to kidnap her and get the little boy back to use as a climbing boy again.

Thankfully the Marquis and his friend rescue them, the friend manages to shoot the brother as he attempts to kill the Marquis. They will report the death of the brother and the nasty chimney sweep will picked up by the authorities and transported.

They advertise and the parents of the little boy are found. So all ends well. The Marquis is of course in love with the heroine and has been ever since he saw her. And he is no longer bored and irresponsible since she has shown him his purpose in his life.

Quick read. Typical Cartland though the plot was quite normally spaced which is good. Enjoyed it a lot. Nothing overly special though.

This one is definitely different than previous BC books I've read, more focusing on the rescue of a child. It was still entertaining tho.

Party boy, daredevil The Marquis of Troon (Serle) arranges one last dare with his friends and fellows before giving up his rakeish lifestyle for marriage. The dare is a horse race—but everyone has to wear eyepatches and have one arm tied behind their backs. The race is a success, but on his way home, Valeta’s father has a heart attack as a result of the excitement and dies. But before he died, he made Serle his daughter’s guardian in the end of his death. So now Serle is stuck taking care of head-strong, compassionate Valeta.

The plot is pretty exciting as we learn that Serle’s younger brother Lionel hates his guts and would do anything to get rid of Serle for good. Serle’s scandalous mistress Dilys also wants a bit of revenge because Serle turns her down (after originally planning to marry her). And then there’s Freddie, Serle’s BFF who seems to have all the brain cells. Thank god he’s there to help Serle make good decisions. There’s also the plot of the “Climbing Boys” who were the chimney sweeps who suffered greatly and died young. Some of them were even kidnapped boys of well bred families, which was exactly what happened to the boy Valeta and Serle end up rescuing from his abusive chimney sweep boss.

The romance takes a backseat to the exciting plot in this one, but I think it’s a good thing. Gave Serle room to grow as a character and Valeta to get used to the idea of him maybe being halfway decent if he tries LOL.

Idea interessante.

This love story started out strong. A bored Marquis with a trusty friend. A silly horse race that results with the death of a good man. Now said Marquis is made the guardian of a young woman with strong ideas of how the rich and titled have a responsibility to care for others. These two butt heads which are the ingredients for love. The jilted lover and jealous brother add the tension and conflict. I liked the components of this book but the end is too rushed. Cartland makes the realization that there is love between these two instant, going from 0 to 100 mph much too fast. The end would have been more satisfying if she had let it blossom, allowing both Serle and Levita to recognize they had feelings for each other especially with the heart warming reunion of the little boy and his parents. Cartland was I such a rush to write quantity over quality.

Above average

Another good story. I really like this one. I didn't skip any words. I like the fact that there were two heroines. Although they didn't get equal time but still there were two. She still relies a lot on kidnapping to bring action to the story but this was more up to date then the others I have read so far.
