What does Sasuke's older brother want with Naruto? As Jiraiya trains Naruto to push beyond his limits, secrets of the past are revealed, and a mysterious shinobi who could change everything begins to take center stage.
Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
The siblings meet. Sasuke and Itachi clash, and Sasuke is hopeless. Poor Sasuke. He's feeling a bit down because he is falling so far behind everyone, even that loser Naruto. It's galling!
I guess he's gonna have to go over to the dark side soon.
On the bright side, Naruto has fallen in with a really bad crowd. Ero-senin has robbed Naruto, neglected him, and has gone off whoring with his money. At least he's one of the three legendary Senin, or I might start believing that Jiraiya is just exploiting the poor kid.
Nah, what am I thinking? Of course he's exploiting the hell out of Naruto.
Reading Naruto, you really feel the connection between Naruto and Sasuke way more than the anime (Orochimaru: “the Fox Kid is changing Sasuke’s soul.”) making The Betrayal so much more emotional 😭😭😭
Ottimo, ottimo volume!!
Ah, Itachi Uchiha. One of the greatest characters in all of fiction. He also has one of the best designs in all of fiction. I have to dress as him for Halloween one of these years.
I truly didn't grasp how long manga took to make, especially one whole volume, until I began reading Naruto and related the manga content to its anime. I've personally discovered a whole new appreciation for the genre as a form of art. Volume 17 covers two main stories. First Itachi and Kisame altercating with Naruto, Sasuke and then Jiraya. Second the pursuit of Lady Tsunade. The relationship between Sasuke and Itachi is revealed together with some background story during their first encounter since Itachi wiped out the Uchiha clan. Ultimately the Akatsuki duo retreats with Itachi using Amaterasu on the toad belly to escape. This detail escaped me when I watched the anime several years ago, but it's actually quite relevant to the plot in the future. I adore how Jiraya is being fleshed in the manga. I feel like I've gotten to "know" him much more intimately than in the anime. He pairs the pursuit of Tsunade with training Naruto and the volume covers the first and a half stages of Rasnegan. Tsunade makes her debut as a big-breasted, gabling addicted, old age defying, medical ninja genius! The gabling bit reminds me of Faye Valentine in Cowboy Bebop.
Not bad, but uneven. While Naruto's training is interesting, and Kishimoto laboriously sets up his pieces for a confrontation, the dramatic and the supposedly funny scenes don't mesh well: the juxtaposition is just too big. Also, it's another volume with lots of explanations about chakra and its flow that I feel I really could've been spared. I guess I'm hooked on the mystery of Tsunade, Orochimaru and Jiraya and I've grown to like Naruto (and even Sasuke, sigh) too much to get overly irritated with Kishimoto's meandering, bumbling narrative, but not as blind as not to see this for what it is: a filler volume.
An incongruous blend of danger and humour with this story arc. It introduces us to a crucial villain in the franchise who is none other than Itachi Uchiha as well as some insane encounters, but there were unnecessary comic relief that came disrupt the flow.
The second half also introduces to one of Naruto's most important training and really highlights his dumbness, but also his ability to be creative on his feet.
i really Really hate to say and admit this but i still have mixed feelings about jiraiya ... cos honestly he really played a big role in naruto's life we cant deny that fact right,, but yea hes a trash anyway so
While Sasuke and Kakashi are still recovering from the repercussions of Itachi's attack, Jiraiya and Naruto came very close to finding the future Hokage. Naruto is back on vigorous training to boost up his strength which he might need against the Akatsuki.
I'm enjoying these sessions of training of Naruto a lot. Now, I'm curious about the other members of the Akatsuki.

There was not much action besides the subtle battle between the Uchiha's. We also got to see the "big 3" again, leading to more conflict. I am excited for the next Volume.
The starting of this volume was interesting. It showed the clash between two brothers. Sasuke and Itachi. I wonder how Sasuke can beat such a strong guy. Itachi's powers were amazing. The first sight of Amaterasu, well that was terrifying. Meanwhile, the destiny of Naruto seems clear. He has something inside him that a secret organization want so desperately and they will do anything to catch him.
Naruto seems terrified for a moment about this aspect but his real character shows up quickly. He is dumb but he has a knack for a hard work and while Jiraya is in search of Tsunade, he gives very less attention to Naruto and this frustrates him very much but still we see a soft moment when Jiraya gives him that Ice candy, something which will be a symbol of their relationship.
With another boring training arc started, It was a bit boring in the later parts but still I must say there were so many funny moments in this volume, something which we have not seen in the first 16 volumes much. These all volumes are 5-star read but I rank them comparatively and that is why I gave this 3 star.
Looks the story is getting more interesting now. I mean it was before but has its moments where it kind of I don't know stalls or not really moving forward but taking its time? Anyway, this one was good as we got some plot arcs going on with the villain, another obviously a villain and the MC, etc.

I enjoyed reading this manga. Its cool to see a backstory on both Uchiha's and its still funny and amazing and I'm glade I decided to read the manga to one of my fave anime growing up. I am happy to see where this story will take us. And we get to see Lady Tsunder and her pig is so cute!!!!!
I think the book is veary good. The fights are veary good the Akaksuki were fantastic. But id like to see more of Sauske and more of Tsunade and itchis back story is great as well overall 8/10
this is great book by masashi kishimoto and witch is about how a dangeres group called the atkatski is trying to take the power that Naruto has in him and sauske is trying to kill his big brother because he killed his whole clan and its very hard because itachi I the second best member in the atkatski and sauske will not stop till he has the power to defeat itachi his big brother.
