The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 10 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (79–87) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon is a transitional one. As the Tokyo Prefecture Tournament is split up into two halves, there is some time between them. It is during this time that Akutsu Jin from Yamabuki Middle School, one of the semi-finalists is introduced.

Akutsu Jin is a punk, who is known to be once a decade tennis player and a monster on and off the court. He is a very cynical person and hates to be told what to do. He physically punishes those who dare to do so. He is very violent and attempts to cause conflict constantly. Apparently, he and Takashi Kawamura know one another as they were once in the same martial arts class.

To get ready for the semi-finals for the Tokyo Prefecture Tournament, Seishun Academy decided to have the regulars to play with each other. Ryōma Echizen, the Prince of Tennis plays against Shūsuke Fuji, the Genius of Tennis, which was rather interesting to read. Takeshi "Momo" Momoshiro finds out that he is to play against Kunimitsu Tezuka, the captain of the tennis team and the only person to beat Ryōma Echizen.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takeshi Konomi. The tankōbon introduces Akutsu Jin from Yamabuki Middle School and he is one rough player who likes to beat up his opponents before he plays them, which includes Seishun Academy and Ginka Middle School, whose tennis team seems weaker than they are supposed to be, Ryōma Echizen has single-handedly defeated the whole team on a whim.

All in all, The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 10 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

5/5 (Review is for the series as a whole and does not contain spoilers)

This series follows 7th grader Ryoma Echizen as he strives to become the number one tennis player at his junior high school. Throughout the series, Ryoma faces off against numerous opponents, each one stronger than the last, in an effort to help lead his tennis team to becoming the champions of the National Tennis Tournament.

This series is a cute, action packed story about some junior high school students playing tennis. No prior knowledge of tennis is necessary, as the author takes the time to explain how certain shots are executed and briefly mentions which professional tennis players may use those shots. As the story progresses, some of the tennis shots get a bit more unrealistic and overly dramatic, but it adds to the excitement and builds tension. (So note that if you are an avid tennis player, it might seem a bit out there in terms of realism.) This is a great series for people who enjoy sports manga, and who enjoy competition, as the boys in this manga continue to push each other to new heights in their skills. There are also some good lessons in the story that teach the readers about having fun and continuing to persevere even when things get tough. It also teaches readers that sometimes we lose, and that’s okay too. In terms of age ratings, I would say that this series is a safe one for those in middle school, or perhaps even a bit younger. Overall, I really enjoyed this manga for its low stakes, fun action, and enjoyable cast of characters.

I like the Jin plot point, but it doesn't really go anywhere; he may come back volumes from now, but judging by the way this manga has been written so far, I kind of doubt it.

The Ryoma/Shusuke battle is pretty cool, but gets interrupted by the start of the Momo/Kunimitsu match and neither gets resolved in this issue. I was planning on dropping this series after volume 10, so I'm kind of sad it ends on a cliffhanger, but I also don't see myself spending more money on this series so, eh, whatever. 🤷‍♀️

At the time of this review, I have read volumes 8-14.

Fighting, really?
Okay, I am only basing this off of one other manga (Slam Dunk), but what's with the 90's sports manga and fighting? The newer sports manga may have one punch thrown and a lot of shirt tugging, but there is no full on fisticuffs. This new character that has brought in the fisticuffs is BAD NEWS!

Shusuke vs. Ryoma
This is like King Bumi vs. Toph. One seems to be a little ahead of the other, but then the other one is doing different things. I will talk more about this in the next volume.

Verdict: I am getting into this manga, especially due to the well-timed cliff-hangers that make you want to read the next volume.

It was a nice change from all the stuff going on in the others. Also, it was good to see Royma stand up to Jin. Since Jin is not a very nice person.

Around this volume is when The Prince of Tennis begins to deviate completely from real tennis and focus almost entirely on fantastical, magical shots. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but for me, the real magic lay in how realistic those first few volumes were because I could relate to them. That said, I still enjoy the series.

After defeating St. Rudolph Academy, the Seigaku team practices with intramural matches. Ryoma and Shusuke are pitted against each other and both players pull out all the stops. The tennis is action-packed and heart-wrenching - the defeated player runs the risk of losing their spot as a regular!

I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but here we go again: this volume has the same shortcomings as the previous ones: cliches, formulaic plot, and somewhat one-dimensional characters. As a tennis player, the tennis action drew me in and allowed me to overlook these faults.

Oh look we get development for the female side characters... who are useless damsels in distress. Great. Oh and we get bullies and stuff introduced out of nowhere, hopefully they're given actual personality instead of continuing to be comical evil sadists.
