Singing through the Night: Courageous Stories of Faith from Women in the Persecuted Church

Rate this book
Believers in the West are understanding more about Christians struggling in other parts of the world. However, many of the accounts of the persecuted church are missing an important part of the story--the women. In this stirring book, Anneke Companjen sheds light on the lives of eleven women suffering persecution in nine different countries around the world. Through their true stories of imprisonment, full of loss and pain, and unexpected joy, these women inspire Western readers to persevere and endure their own hardships for the cause of Christ. At the end of each chapter there are questions for deeper study, whether for individual use or as a guide for small groups seeking to understand and pray for our persecuted sisters. Readers will be deeply moved by the strength and faith of these courageous women.

There are many people around the world who suffer persecution for being a Christian. The women are especially vulnerable because far too often, they lack resources and are extra vulnerable to attack. This book shares some of their stories often with identifying details disguised to protect them. It is written as a devotional with scripture for study and thought-provoking questions for the reader to consider. This book gave me a deeper longing for a closer walk with my Lord. It provided encouragement that He will always be with me as He was with these brave women. It also gave me the desire to reach out with the gospel to the lesser fortunate and to pray for those who are suffering.

I just finished reading this book yesterday 3/5/2009. It was a really good books, it talks about people and families in different countries that convert from there current religion to Christianity. Although in these countries worshiping God is forbidden people in these countries lose everything for some even there lives serving GOD. If you are looking for a good spiritual book to read, this would be it.

Wow, being able to read these true life stories was amazing encouraging and moving. Just seeing God working through these women's lives was amazing, and how with his help they kept on. I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs encouragement in a tough time, or anyone at all. Simply amazing stories. It also helps give you an idea of how to better pray for our sisters in Christ who face persecution every day.

I'm not finished with it yet, but so far this proves to be a very touchingly profound book. It gives an in depth look into the lives of persecuted Christian women from around the world. Very horrible what they have to go through on a daily basis, yet their faith is made stronger with each trial they face. This is an amazing book!

As the subtitle says, stories of faith from women in the persecuted church around the world. I was disappointed in this. When I saw it on Amazon, I thought it sounded really interesting. The accounts are arranged in chapters according to the sort of lesson learned in the situation. I recognize that there needs to be a certain amount of "vagueness" in order to protect the identities of the individuals but it wasn't consistent. In many of the stories, the women are wives of pastors who are taken to prison and the account is how they coped. Also, it seemed as if was a bit of a marketing ploy for Open Doors, the ministry for which the author works, and who published the book.

It took me a long time to read this book but in no way is that indicative of what I thought about it. Because it is not one continuous story it lends itself to being read differently from other books. Each chapter has a theme and then a couple of stories about persecuted Christians around the world to show how they were able to persevere through their suffering. Each chapter has a series of questions at the end and could be easily used as a group study or for personal reflection. I am always encouraged by the stories of my persecuted brothers and sisters and I found this book to be not only encouraging but helpful in being more specific in my prayers for them.

Eye opening.

This book opens the eyes of believers to the reality of the Persecuted Church. It also reaffirms God's grace for His people.

Een indringend en heftig boek over vrouwen die om het geloof dat ze aanhangen in de moslimwereld door de machthebbers worden vervolgd. Haast niet te geloven!

What a beautiful read. Singing Through the Night is emotional, heartfelt and filled with faith. The women and families in these stories risked their lives for what they believe in. It is so very sad that people worldwide do not have freedom of religion and experience such discrimination and horrific situations I could never have imagined.

The people in this book have true faith. Each chapter and each person's story includes references from scripture that connected me further to the Lord.

I quite enjoyed the book; it really opened my eyes to the suffering of the persecuted church. However, there are some areas in which I choose to pick holes, thus only the three star rating.
