The collection did a really great job at confounding me by placing absurd, hilarious stories right before heartbreaking soul-shattering tragedies.

it was fine, if boring

shocker!: dostoevsky writes the incel story. yeah, ok, it's fine. but in every single work i've read of dostoevsky's (last one aside?) he continues to be weird about women and go on pages and pages for single monologues. he's got to be the most overrated russian author of all time, at least out of what i've read, especially considering i liked *almost* all the other stories in here

really like how the imps are just guys planning together and playing rock paper scissors for who gets to do the least work for their mean boss. "and he kept ploughing and i tried to stop him and he cut my hands :(" easily the best and funniest tolstoy story in the collection

CHEKHOV:

the lady with the dog
pretty good for its short length

the bet
unrealistic. i endured 17 years of the delineated imprisonment, and instead of becoming a superhuman genius, my fragile gray matter became ravenously suicidal and imbecilic

the kiss
pretty, bittersweet story, but largely unmemorable to me

the black monk
very tragic but i really enjoy chekhov's works

The book was a great collection, and I didn't hate Tolstoy or Chekhov but I didn't love any of them either. albeith Dolstovesky being the most popular, I didn't care for White Nights as much as I thought.
