This book as well as the three before it are a mix of reality and what we suspect as fiction. The real life world events that are referenced to in the book that have actually occurred in real-time add a what if, could it be element to the read. Astral travel, chakras, energy, empaths, different planes all reflect to the intellect, knowledge and life experiences of the author. Its quite amazing to have the ability and imagination to pull this together. I really am enjoying and appreciating the brilliance of not only this book but if the three previous books in the series. I look forward to book 5.
Not quite as good as the first three but still very entertaining. I love reading about the worlds of witches. This is a great series so far and I recommend you give it a try. I won't share the plot with you read it and find out yourself. Now I am off to read book five in the. Story to find out what's going to happen to David.
Book Four of Stephen Atchison’s The Witches of Scotland series slows down considerably compared to its predecessors. This installment leans heavily into world-building, which, while important for expanding the scope of the story, made for a much slower and at times frustrating read. Out of all the books so far, this one was the hardest to stay engaged with.
The constant perspective and timeline shifts pulled me out of the story. Instead of deepening the narrative, moving between Jessica, Alicia, Aunt Gen, and David often made the pacing feel disjointed. The constant scene changes; from Edinburgh to Jessica’s home, to the library, to the World Economic Forum; added to the confusion. If the story had kept the characters in the same timeline and given us alternating perspectives on the same events both parties were apart of, it would have been much easier to follow and more immersive in terms of flow.
Jessica continues to be a sticking point for me. After her frustrating arc in Book Three, her storyline here didn’t add to her likability. The mystery of what’s happening inside her head is introduced but not resolved, which left me feeling even more disconnected from her as a character. Then the mystery found at her home that she is transported to is just another confusing addition. The lack of clarity in her arc made her feel more like a plot device than a protagonist.
The book only began to pick up when in the David sections finally faced off in his challenges. Those chapters had the tension, focus, and excitement I had been waiting for throughout the entire novel. Unfortunately, it was sporadic and came too late to elevate the overall experience.
While Book Four builds out the world and sets the stage for bigger battles and gives insight on what is to come, its scattered perspectives and slow pacing made it my least favorite read of the series so far. I’m still invested enough to continue, but I hope the next installment brings sharper focus, more consistent pacing, and finally, some long-overdue answers for Jessica’s character to make her likeable again. 2.5/3 for me.
The Witches of Scotland, Book 4 continues to enchant with its blend of historical intrigue and magical realism. The story deepens as the characters face new challenges, weaving together ancient Scottish lore and modern-day witchcraft in a captivating way. The vivid descriptions of the landscape and the rich history make for an immersive read. While it may feel a bit slower-paced than earlier books, the emotional depth and the development of key relationships keep you invested. Perfect for fans of witchy, atmospheric tales!
I'm torn between a 3 & 4 star rating but I went with 4 because while I am very much enjoying the overall story line, the last two books felt more like novellas rather than full lenght stories and that has left me disappointed with them individually. The abrupt endings to this story really made me consider a 3 star review because it resolved nothing... it felt like a TV cliffhanger more than anything else.
Each of the books in this series feels like half a book. I believe these must be YA books for kids with short, short attention spans, except the "F" word is used a lot. Not YA approved. There is a large cast of characters that I have a hard time keeping track of so not sure how a YA would be able to follow everything. It is getting quite muddled. As in the first book, the main character acts like he is 15-16 y/I but he is 23. David starts a challenge that is like an escape room.
I was left hanging at the end if the book. What happened to David and did Jessica figure out who was occupying her mind and body? Who's trying to confuse Jessica about Dr. Campbell being her real dad? That's just some of the questions that the book has left he with. I can't wait for the next one!
This is a review of all 4 books I've read so far. Steven does a marvelous job of developing realistic thinking, action and skills in David. The back story of esoteric principles sounds accurate and though synoptic, indicate lots of research. Thoroughly enjoying this series and hoping for more.
Fantastic read and actually can be very real as my daughter is a Shaman in training, so the spiritual realm is very close to being correct! Your characters are very well developed and work well together. Such a great job putting the real and fantasy together in these books!
This fantasy world has kept my attention and am looking forward to reading book 5. The characters are very interesting and we keep learning more about them as they discover themselves. If you enjoy a well written book with mystery and magic then this is the book for you.
I like this story, the characters are interesting and the plot moves right along. Each book ends with a cliff hanger - which makes me want to start the next book. David is a good guy but it is unclear whether any of the other characters are as well.
I really like these books, I can follow the narrative easily and allow my imagine to flow. Not a big fan of the way some of the books end (eg like this one) but of course it has left me wanting the next book now!
This book is a great fourth part of this amazing series. The characters are enthralling and I just want more. This author is a must for anyone who wants a fast paced adventure. Enjoy!
This book has me a little baffled. There’s just so much going on and so many different aspects to the story. Sometimes it a little mush, but I couldn’t stop if I wanted to. Which I don’t.
The characters of the books are well developed and the story line is interesting. I’m looking forward to reading the next one. The books are short so feel a bit choppy. Eventually, bringing some of the books together would be good so they don’t end abruptly.
I am enjoying this series so much. It's not what I expected from a book about witches at all, and that unexpected touch got me hooked. The cliff hanger at the end though has me rushing this review so that I can move on to the next book!
This is an easy read and I enjoyed the story and fantasy. It’s an entertaining way to spend a few hours. Characters not well developed but appropriate for the story.
I'm enjoying the books. They just don't last long enough and end on a cliffhanger. Thanks to kindle I can download the next book, it would really annoy me if I had to wait for the next book in the series to come out and I'd probably DNF them on that.
what a way to end, cliff hanger!!! enjoyed how David and jess are now on their own paths and the chapters go from one to the other. must say not even going wait to read Book 5..... I need to know more!!!

I've read four of the series so far and I'm looking forward to the rest. The story keeps your attention, engages your mind, has yet to get tedious, and is enjoyable. It's everything you want in good escapism.
