This is a grim tale with a thread of hope throughout, you sometimes have to search very hard for any joy, joy comes in short flights. It shows a different era and a different way of being, of living in a place in history which cannot be revisited. Most modern children would find it hard to identify with the main character, however they could align themselves with the emotional life of the boy and his companionship with his bird, and the loneliness of before his friend was with him and after the loss of his companion. There are themes of bullying, difference, loneliness, loss and identity which could be explored by upper KS2 children, as a play it can also be acted out to inform P4C sessions as a starter to discussions.
