I have aided in the capture of a serial killer, which is made even more impressive by the fact that I... am a cat.
Happily settled in with Jane, a would-be victim I helped to save, I thought my days as an amateur sleuth would be traded for belly rubs and sunbeam naps.
Until I watched the man in the apartment complex opposite ours, murder his wife. Once again, it falls to me to help the bumbling humans bring a killer to justice.
Step one is proving to Jane that something horrible happened.
But how do I convince her a crime occurred in the dark of the night? More importantly, how can I prevent her from becoming his next target?
J.S Ellis is a thriller author. She has a degree in creative writing, English literature, and digital marketing. She lives in Malta with her fiancé and their fur baby Eloise. When she’s not writing or reading, she’s either cooking, eating cheese and chocolate, or listening to good music and enjoying a glass of wine or two.
I decided to write the sequel of this book when I found out I was pregnant with my first child, so to celebrate, I wrote this book for you all to enjoy. When I wrote the first book, I thought how silly it was to write a book about a cat living with a serial killer and I nearly didn't publish it. My husband urged me to publish it, and what I can say the responses have been wonderful.

J.S. Ellis is the author of psychological thrillers and suspense and published her debut psychological thriller in 2019, which was an instant success and received great praise from readers. She writes stories about obsession and betrayal. When she’s not putting her characters in uncomfortable, difficult positions, J.S. Ellis likes to relax with her husband and their fur baby, Eloise. They live on the sunny island of Malta.
See, I told you something was off.“
Jane and Theo have moved on with their lives, mostly since Theo saved Jane. Now, Jane is struggling to put herself out there, and Theo is always close by. When Theo sees something, he knows he has to make Jane understand, and they both have to survive.
The imagery in the book was fantastic. The way the windows of the various apartments are compared to television or scrolling social media is very relevant.
I love Theo so much. And his affection for his human, Jane. I was unsure what to make of Timon, but he was a great character.
This is a quick and easy read, with a plot that moves swiftly and will keep you engaged. I liked the alternating perspectives, and I still find using a cat as a main character a stroke of genius.
J.S Ellis delivers again with high-stakes, suspenseful, well-placed plot twists. The multiple POVs were refreshing and kept me engaged. Theo and Jane try their best to move on, but this comes to a standstill when Theo witnesses a disturbing and deadly event in one of the neighbour's apartments. This is not your traditional mystery plot, and watching the world through Theo's eyes made it a delightful read. Do not skip this one if you're looking for a feline protagonist etched with suspense.

This is a combination of "Rear Window" and "The Cat Who…".
Each chapter is written in first person..either Jane, the human or Theo the cat. It's mostly what they are thinking. An odd format fir me but it moves the story along.
There is a murder, a tiny mystery and I guess you can call it a romance….but an odd one.
Most of the story is relatively calm until the last 10%… then I got very anxious and read really fast.
The ending is rather short and left a lot of loose ends.
This seems to be a series so I suppose the answers will be in the next book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Cat Saw Who Did It? Is book 2 in the Theodore: The Neighbor's Cat Series by J S Ellis. I really liked that each chapter was told from a different point of view. I thought that it was great to hear Theo's view of the story against Jane's point of view. The characters are well written and excellent. I enjoyed how the author brought readers up to date with just enough background from Book 1 to give a foundation for this book. I think this thriller/cozy mystery is a must read. As a cat lover, I was sure that I'd enjoy this. Part of it was told from the perspective of Theo the cat, which in my opinion, is an interesting perspective. The presence of Theo obviously made me smile, but at the same time, it was everything that I'd expect from a good thriller. It was gripping and entertaining, and I identified with Jane quite a lot.

Review:
This is the second book of Theodore’s adventures and Theodore is a STAR. When I came across the book title, I immediately got it. The Cat Saw Who Did It by J.S. Ellis had all my attention when half of the narration of the book was done by the cat, Theodore. The plot is simple, but it feels threatening all the time. It has the right amount of romance, cuteness, sorrow, thrill and mystery. There are not many characters involved but those who are, I could not come to trust any of them even till the end.
The story is told from Point of View of Theo as well as Jane. I loved Theo's POV, especially in the beginning. I just loved his take on humans, their emotions and lifestyle. Conversations between the animals are adorable.
You can pick this book even if you have not read its prequel. It's a super interesting story that will have you make theories and doubt it. I would have loved a little more elements added to the story though. I recommend it if you want a super quick, short, crisp and thrilling mystery to read that stars a cat!
I received the e-arc via BookSirens and this is my honest review!
Serial killers and cats are my love language. How often do you read a book written from the perspective of a cat who could be the feline version of Sherlock Holmes? When Theo returns for another mystery, you know you're in for a treat. Definitely filled with thrills and suspense.
This is a deceptively simple story, where much more is at play than you might suspect. And for readers who wanted to pick up a book because a cat plays a lead role, I must unfortunately disappoint those too, because this story is not about 'Tuxedo Theo' at all. He merely functions as a …. - well, no more spoilers, you need to find out for yourself.
A short summary:
Cat Theo now lives with Jane because he saved her life, she was the intended next victim of a serial killer who did kill Jane's husband Matthew. Jane is inconsolable and has locked herself in her flat. Cat Theo worries about Jane, she has changed since her husband's murder, and, what worries him even more, she no longer writes. Theo is upset, because it puts a strain on his living arrangements. Additionally, he finds it unacceptable if he would have to go on a diet because there is not enough money coming in, at worst that would mean a decrease in his favourite meat pies.
The narrative perspective switches between Jane and Theo, it is summer in Malta (!) and it is sweltering hot. ( ‘M’ is a another giveaway) Jane's flat faces a courtyard, she smokes a cigarette in the window of her own flat, and notices that she can peek into the room of a flat opposite of the courtyard. These windows are 'like TV sets, and ''windows into someone's life' {red.}
As I mentioned earlier, this is a deceptively simple story, the original story of which dates back to 1942, and it is a kind of homage, or remake if you like, of one of the finest and best films of all times. I rarely give such crazy advice to a reader, but to understand this setting and plot in its totality, you have to read less and go to the cinema more often, and if you still think this is a suspense story about a cat and its owner, then I'm afraid you have misunderstood the gist of the story; I would gladly like to invite you to an old-fashioned evening in front of the tube….
I don't give the full five stars for this masterful story, because there can only be one best and Master of this genre; and Theo may well have outstanding qualities, but my ‘Fred’ is and always will be best.
Brilliant story, 4+ stars. Thank you Booksprout for this arc. I leave my review voluntarily.
The Cat Saw Who Did It by J.S. Ellis is a simply delightful book. I know, I know we are talking about murder here but, we are also talking about a cool cat. Theodore is his name. This is the second book for Theodore. The Neighbors Cat was book one which came out in 2020. I bought the book in anticipation of reading this one. I forgot I had it, so now I need to go back and read it.
This is a sequel to book one but, my experience tells me that this book does very well as a stand alone. I did not get confused or wonder what was going on. The author tells us everything we need to know to enjoy this second story.
The Cat Saw Who Did It is a murder mystery in case you couldn't tell from the title. Theodore is one of the main characters and he actually narrates part of the book. I told you he is a cool cat. He is a very beautiful Tuxedo cat. More points for Theodore. He is nosey and he has a bit of personality like all cats. The other main character is Jane. She owns Theodore as much as anyone can own a cat. I absolutely fell in love with Theodore. I liked Jane and could relate to her as well. There were some other characters that were not as likable and there were some that were not fleshed out as much.
I did like the murder story and I liked the hair raising ending. J.S. Ellis did a wonderful job with the story line. Her characterization of a cat was spot on in my opinion. This book had me turning pages and hanging on the edge of my chair and holding my breath. I was definitely along for the ride from page one. If you love a quirky little murder mystery, this book is probably one you will enjoy. I think you should put it on the top of your reading list. Until next time…Happy Reading!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Heroic Theodore is at the top of the list of my favorite fictional cats. I'm so glad that the author has brought him back after the first book. J.S. Ellis has a knack for expressing his cat's eye view in a manner that allows her books to be seriously suspenseful, not only cute and humorous.
Her other main characters are as well-developed as Theo is. After what she went through in the first book, I still have an instant affinity for Jane. In this book, I rooted for her to understand what was happening before Theo became a victim of his own need to protect the neighborhood from danger. Bailey, the little Shih Tzu across the way, is also heroic, if rash. The Doberman downstairs, Monster, is a question mark.
So is his human, Timon, who reminds both Theodore and Jane of Dean, Theodore's previous owner. Dean was a serial killer, so the fact that Timon reminds them both of him is off-putting,to say the least. Inspector Lydia Falzon is another character reappearing from the first book, but, despite what happened last time, she's inexplicably unsupportive of Jane's suspicions. Aside from Jane, none of the human characters seem as trustworthy as the animals.
A side benefit to reading Ellis's books is to be transported far across the ocean to Malta, an archipelago between Africa and Sicily. Her evident love for her country makes it feel especially vivid, sun-kissed and lovely.
Thank you to J. S. Ellis, Black Cat Ink Press, and BookSirens for the free advance reader's copy. As always, my review is uninfluenced by any obligation. It was a wonderful read
The Cat Saw Who Did It? by J. S. Ellis is the second in the delightful Theodore: The Neighbor's Cat Series. For me it is a bit edgier than a cozy with suspenseful and thrillery elements which really appealed to me. Told in multiple perspectives, the story has a wonderful depth with good characterization without the oft-associated silliness in some cat-centric novels, although he is able to "talk" to other animals.
Theo the cat and his human Jane live in Malta. Jane's grief for her murdered husband continues to weigh heavily on her mind. Sleep evades her and as cats are wont to do, Theo tries and succeeds in getting Jane's attention after he sees something disconcerting happen through their window into a neighbour's flat one night. Two plus two = missing neighbour quandary. Both Theo and Jane are anxious to discover what happened using their own methods. A hint of romance is in the air, too.
I love that the pace started out slowly then built up to a crescendo with a gratifying ending, well set up for the third in the series which I eagerly await. Though not besotted with most of the characters, I did not need that to enjoy the book as the whole package fit together beautifully. The originality and writing style struck me as pretty wonderful.
The addition of more cultural and atmospheric tidbits to create the unique and authentic experience which is Malta would have elevated this for me. It felt like it could have been many cities. However, this was still a fabulous reading adventure!

Very smart cat and his wise owner save the day? If you like thrilling, suspenseful books where you want to yell at the unbelievers, read this book. Yes, Theodore the famous cat who saved Jane from his owner Dean deduces another crime has been committed. Even though Theo adored Dean, Theo couldn’t let him continue killing. Now he and Jane live together but Jane is having a hard time getting past the events which almost caused her death. She is a writer of crime stories but is having a hard time putting pen to paper. Theo is worried about her. Oddly, what brings her back to life is the probable death of a neighbor whose window is directly across from hers in her apartment complex. Theo and his human are on the case! Jane cannot get Lydia, the Inspector who killed Dean before he killed Jane, to investigate without proof of a crime. Things get a little twisted up when Jane falls for her new neighbor but is he involved? There will be a surprising twist near the end. When Jane becomes proactive for good reason, things come to fruition. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through BookSirens. The writing is pretty good, other than a few wrong words, missing words or wrong pronouns, correction of which would easily make this story five-stars. (I read the published version, not the ARC.)
The Cat Saw Who Did It, the second book in Theodore, the neighbors cat Book2 by JS Ellis Theodore may have moved from a dingy apartment with a Serial Killer to holidaying at a five-star hotel with the beautiful Jane but unfortunately he isn’t done with murder. He’s also adding cat Savior to his resume. Unfortunately he’s going to have to first prove to Jane there was a murder and then try to prove they’re not closely related to the killer or are they? I love Theodore and have since the first book with him he never ceases to make me giggle and JS Ellis writes a plot that keeps you turning the pages who would’ve thought a talking cat would make for a great cozy mystery I have read many mysteries with animal sidekicks but I do think Theodore is the first one to speak and OMG I love him and love this book a definite five star read. I may have at one point or another yelled at my Kindle Jane there’s a cat in a dead body down the hall… Love this book! Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Thank you to the amazing writer and the publisher or publishers for all your hard work!
Book one was great, but book two was just as phenomenal! The author did it again! I couldn't put this book downhill the end! Theodore was just as lovable and adorable as book one, if not even more so! Not only that, he gained friends and sadly lost one. I enjoyed the fact that we got to experience him speaking to other animals and just not experience his thoughts. The writing in this book is just so unique, and I hope to read more from this author.
The thrill, sadness, adrenaline and all the emotions you feel reading this book are so worth it and I just can't express how much enjoyment I have experiencing all of it with both the main character and the cat as we go through everything together tryingtosee how it all plays out in the end.
I hope to read more by this wonderful author! This book earned every star!
Princess Fuzzypants here: I truly enjoy reading Theodore. He is a wise and resourceful kitty who has fascinating insights into the human and feline mind. Clearly the latter is superior. He meets up with beautiful girl cat at the resort where his human, Jane, has booked a romantic getaway with her boyfriend, Timon, and his dog.
Pippa is another lovely character- feline of course- who eventually goes home with Jane and Theo. The two cats get on well. Very well as it turns out. But I felt that her story got rushed at the end, as did the resolution of the murders. Yes, there will be two of them before we are done.
Jane is not a good judge of character, especially male humans. Things do not go according to plan for her and this is no exception. Or perhaps it is just the fact that the animals seem better fleshed out than the humans. It doesn’t ruin the book or the story but it is the reason I give four purrs and two paws up.
Book 2, it might help to read the first book to gain insight into Theodore the cat's character motivation and past. Theodore's mission is to protect Jane, who spends a lot of her time with romance. The chapters switch between Theodore the cat and Jane the owner, showing both sides of the story. The change of perspective also demonstrates the difference in the mood of the narrative. The writing is static and this is a quick read. The book is written in the present tense so readers read the narrative in real-time. This is a personal pleasant way to read since nothing in the future can be foreseen and readers learn what happens at the same time as the characters. It is endearing to follow a cat's perspective.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Yes, Theodore, like most cats is curious. The the cat saw a neighbor murder his wife. After saving his current owner Jane from being his previous owner's victim, Theodore and Jane have been putting their lives back together. This is a feel-good thriller because their life is starting to feel like one of pleasant companionship. Jane is starting to date. Theodore has settled into a routine of looking out the window and exploring the neighborhood. But, once again, Theodore has trouble getting Jane to understand what he has seen. A neighborhood dog suspected the killer too and ended up poisoned. Will Theodore's curiosity put him at risk? How far will Jane go to protect him? This book is every bit as engaging as The Neighbour's Cat.
Jane is a brave lady who survived almost being murdered by the serial linker who murdered her husband and others. She inherited the killers cat, Theodore, who saved her life, and she and Theodore are now inseparable. This story is told from a number of perspectives (Jane, Theo and Timon, a neighbor ) my favorite is the cat’s! It takes place in Malta, based in the big apartment complex where everyone can see in everyone else’s unit. The cat sees a woman murdered, tries to communicate it to Jane and the story goes from there. A delightful change! I received a free ARC from the author through BookSirens and leave this review voluntarily.
A great follow-up to the first book. The book kept my interest although I felt it dragged at the beginning. The story was well written and the mystery had some interesting plotting. This wasn’t a mystery in the traditional who done it model but more as suspense and plot twists. The main characters brought forward from the first book were Jane and her cat Theodore. The book was written from each of their viewpoints with individual chapters that they narrated. If you like suspense and a story that gives equal importance to human and animal viewpoints you will definitely enjoy this book.
I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.
The cat Saw Who Did It, #2 - I missed the first book but it did not matter eventhough the second book is a continuation of the first, set one year later.
I felt I had read this book before and had definitely seen more than one 40s - 60s movie with this theme, less the cat and the serial killer. Novak and Stewart come to mind. The addition of the cat and his point of view made the rerun interesting, although the story followed the movie so close that it became boring in places. Source: Booksprout. 4*
Dark, Dangerous Truth - Interesting story lines and characters about more than one nut. Books should never be judged by their covers. Few good secrets and turns. Source: Booksprout. 4*
I loved the first in the series, a little mystery told by a cat, and I really enjoyed this one too, except for the one big thing: Ellis uses the exact same mystery that is in the Hitchcock film Rear Window. Shamelessly stealing, even down to the part about the little dog being lowered from an apartment window to the ground in a basket, should not be necessary for any writer, so I have to say, that is disappointing. I gave her book four stars on Amazon but should deduct one, as I'm doing here, because of that.
A mystery set in Malta featuring Theo, a tuxedo cat, and his owner Jane. Jane has a haunted past and is trying her best to move forward. Theo sees something disturbing one night at one of his neighbors’s apartments and is trying to get Jane’s attention. Jane also notices some suspicious activity late at night while she is looking out her window at her neighbor’s apartment. Thank you to the author, J. S. Ellis, for this preview copy.
Jane and Theodore are trying to move on from a serial killer, when Theodore witnesses something horrible in the apartment across the street. Theodore must make Jane realize what happened. I like the way the story is told from the viewpoints of both Jane and Theodore. The characters were well rounded and the suspense builds to a jaw dropping ending. I would definitely recommend it. I received an advance copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
I usually do not read books about cats but the first book just drew me in and I was so engrossed I finished in one sitting. This is the second in I hope turns into a series because I really do enjoy a good murder mystery and this story is told in a very unique way. I also finished this book in one sitting. I could not stop reading it. This story is fast paced and has very interesting characters too.
This is book 2 in the series. Both were great stories. Book 1 didn’t appear to have been proof-read. Being a pathetic perfectionist when it comes to grammar, it was a bit hard for me to get thru. But hats off to the writer / proof-reader / editor! Great job! And that sure does matter!
They are both very good psychological thrillers / mysteries. I didn’t figure out the whole plot until the end! Good job!
Theo, a beautiful Tuxedo cat, needs to save his human again. The last time it was his previous owner, Dean the serial killer, who looks across the apartments and noticed Jane. This time Theo sees a woman being strangled by her husband. Jane meets her new neighbor and they start a relationship, but Theo is watching and waiting to see if Jane needs assistance once again. If you like the quirky, get this series. It's just brilliant.
This is my 2nd read from this author & series. I really enjoy how the author captures the complicated relationship between cat & mom. Also enjoy the narration from the cat & Jane in separate chapters. I have already downloaded the 3rd book to start next. Soon after starting the book I realized the similar storyline to Rear Window & wasn’t sure how I was going to like it, being that is a favorite movie of mine, but it didn’t bother me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is brilliant! As always with J S Ellis, a beautifully written, high tension, fast paced, murder mystery with a well written, slightly neurotic main character! I love the fact one of the points of view is from the cat Theodore, such a delight to read! Overall an amazing experience, a real pleasure to read!
