Qui no ha sentit a parlar de Cthulhu, Nyarlathotep o l’infame Necronomicon? Lord Dunsany, Ambrose Bierce, R. W. Chambers, Arthur Machen o Algernon Blackwood van recollir l’essència de tots aquells terrors d’espant i van contribuir a la seva popularització, però correspon a H. P. Lovecraft l’honor d’haver-ne estat l’inventor. Gràcies a «Els mites de Cthulhu», la influència de Lovecraft en la literatura de terror dels últims cinquanta anys ha estat ncommensurable, fins al punt que s’ha acabat convertint en un autèntic autor de culte. Aquest primer volum, prologat i traduït per Jordi Dausà, és una selecció personal d’alguns dels millors relats dels Mites i una bona porta d’entrada als seus horrors còsmics.

Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.
Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.

La bona notícia és que ja s’ha publicat un segon volum. La dolenta, què en aquesta edició trobareu que la numeració de pàgines a l’índex és incorrecta.

7/10 Recull de contes del precursor del terror còsmic, Lovecraft, on la seva desbordant i retorçada ment ens submergeix en un estat d'angoixa sense igual al temps que la narració traspua la seva vasta cultura.

Alguns relats són molt bons, com La crida de Cthulhu o El color que va caure de l'espai
Altres, com La ciutat sense nom, han estat una mica tortuosos i feixucs amb tanta descripció i tan poca acció.
Però en general, els mons paral·lels plens d'horrors alienígenes que descriu Lovecraft són fascinants.
