No other sound on earth can ignite a fire within like the bugle call of a bull elk! Hunter s life revolves around video games, more video games, and still more video games. Growing up in downtown Denver was the per- fect place to live unnoticed from the rest of the world. But Hunter s life suddenly changes when his dad is laid off from his job and their family is forced to move in order to make ends meet. Trying to get back on their feet, Hunter s family relocates to the wild mountains of Colorado, far away from the city life Denver offers. But tiny Pine Bluff is barely big enough to have a school and it offers Hunter no place to hide from prying eyes. As bad as things seem, they re about to get much worse for Hunter. He discovers that a widowed rancher nicknamed Crazy Kate and a nasty bully named Max have developed a special interest in this city boy. But Hunter soon realizes there is something more to this sleepy, little town up in the mountains. His life takes an unexpected turn when he awakes one day to the majestic bugle call of an elk named Boss. Can this city kid unplug from his video games and plug into the great outdoors? Can his family survive the move to Redemption Road? Can one magnificent bull elk transform an entire town?
Wonderful, wonderful book. I love how the author made it so I quite literally couldn't put the book down, I also loved how at the end of a chapter, he always found a way to immediately hook you and that makes you want to read the next chapter, then the next chapter, then the next, and before you know it its 10:00 on a school night. Then you have the heart warming message at the end, now I'm not going to spoil it, but I will say it has a way bigger meaning to it than you think. I already know that I will have many, many rereads of this book, and just like my first time, I won't put it down. :)
We listened to this audiobook together as a family and this book is getting 5 stars because my kids, the intended audience, told me to rate it 5 stars. As a parent, I would give it 3 stars. We have listened to Hometown Hunters 1-4 and this is the first Hometown Hunters book I would drop to 3 stars.
Overall, the book had a great message about not judging others and understanding that there is more to life than video games.
My biggest issue with this book was with the main character and how he was always jumping to conclusions about a situation and acting before actually understanding the situation. For example (spoiler), the main character is new to school and just had a negative experience with a bully on the bus and is now in the hallways at school. Three boys start walking up to him in the hall and the main character assumes these kids will jump him. The main character thinks through the situation as if he is about to be jumped and plans an escape which includes throwing his backpack at the boys (who have still not actually done anything threatening to the main character) and running away. Later we find out the three boys are trying to greet him and welcome him to the school and are even going to be his friend.
I know the book’s message is all about not judging others, but this scene (and a few others) just made this character look stupid/paranoid. It was hard for me to listen to.
Lastly, the main character had this amazing character arc, (spoiler) beat his video game addiction, and changed an entire town’s opinion of his neighbor in just one week… that is a minor complaint, but I was laughing to myself at the end of the story when the main character is telling the town that he hadn’t played video games in a whole week. This story could have easily been stretched out over a month and it would have felt a little more believable.
Again, overall this book had a good message and my kids enjoyed the book.

My nine-year-old grandson asked me to read this book. I found the story humorous as well as touching. After discussing the story with my grandson, I was impressed with what he took away from it. He told me it was the moral of the story that he liked best. He liked that Hunter opened his heart up to "Crazy Kate" and enabled the whole town to see her in a different light. Of course, he still wants to go elk hunting someday after reading this book.
This book is really good if you like hunting but I do think the part where they were hunting could've been a bit more drawn out and I wish we would have seen more of the antagonist my favorite part of the book has to be when hunter throws his rocks at max. My favorite character was miss Kate because she was actually really nice and caring but people just gave her a bad rap sheet
