This is a great story to read to your children, or grandchildren, or borrow some children just for the pleasure of reading it! There is a lovely rhyming flow to the story, and interesting concepts and words to stretch the imagination... the illustrations are detailed and entertaining. I still have the copy I used to read to my children - when I moved house it was packed in the "Treasures to Save" box... when I mentioned it to my 24 years old she immediately chanted out the first few lines and said how much she enjoyed it!
This is a beautiful book and a great read for parents. The story is simple, fun and has some lovely rhymes, but the real stars here are the illustrations. They are amazing! Korky Paul has worked his magic again and created some of the most detailed and engaging pictures which leave you wondering how he does it. My favourite drawings are of all the cats, but then I like cats! I also always like stories that allow for a few character voices to be created by the parent and there are a good few here, not to mention that of Digger himself. Great stuff.
We adored this book. My daughter is 27 now but, when she was little, we read it so often that l still remember most of it by heart. It is just silly enough to delight a child and rhymes just enough to be a delight to read.
A dog, an underground train and a dinosaur... what more could you want?! I really enjoyed this very funny and silly book, despite a slightly scary looking professor! I am looking forward to using it in the classroom to introduce topics related to things we find underground- fossils, rocks.
The dog knows that he has buried his bone somewhere in the garden. The problem is, he can’t quite remember where. He gets the scent of something delicious and decides to start digging. The book uses rhyme and rhythm to describe all the things the finds underground. The pages are structured so that suspense is built before revealing what the dog has found allowing the children to use their imagination to guess what might have been found. Suitable for children up to year 3, the book is funny and leaves the reader wanting to find out what is going to happen next. Perfect for a short reading for pleasure morning.
Fantastic illustrations which truly immerse the reader in the story. They vary from small boxed sections to giant, full page illustrations which hold your attention and invite a closer look with many amusing added extras. The rhyming pattern that continues through out creates a pleasant rhythm to the read to and the storyline itself appears to encourage perseverance. The reward at the end of the book is then not only enjoyed by the hardworking (or hard-digging?!) dog but he invites all his friends to share in the bounty of his efforts! A delightful message to engage children with.
Through witty, rhyming text and excellent illustrations, Long shows young readers evidence of past civilizations and what might lie beneath their own gardens.
Excellent read - used to read this to my two children, now teenagers. Unfortunately the book has now been destroyed, over the years, but we all still remember the opening of the book....excellent.
