Year is 1948. A new Indian republic is being formed in its nascent stages. All kinds of ideas are in the air. But within Telangana, something more radical was actually happening on the ground for a while. Communists brought together Hindus and Muslims, Men and women, People from all castes came together to defeat the economic chokehold of deshmukh landlords and nawabi royalty for rights to land and dignity. Word spread through newspapers maybe but more importantly it was songs and plays - Maa Bhoomi perhaps being most popular and enduring among all (also owing to Gowtam Ghose's movie).

Of course, Maa Bhoomi was banned less than an year after independence. Too dangerous of a vision to have had floating around. The people of the new republic can build a new state that could surpass religion and caste divides to benefit the poor? Not on this watch
