Can two spirited women free the heart of a wealthy recluse trapped in a cage of his own making? Gareth Renaut, a mysterious investor, lives in isolation after a work accident destroyed the life he had known. When his business partner, Louis, drags him from his woodland oasis into the urban chaos for just one night, he becomes entangled in a web of passion with two unusual women. Kitty, a flamboyant entrepreneur, and Sky, a wounded addict, vie for the key that might unlock the secrets of this complex man, while they spread their own wings and prepare for flight.- -NOTE FROM THE AUTHORThis is, on the surface, a love story. A romantic tale that has become twisted and tormented by the harsh external world and the distorted psychology of the characters that inhabit it.Yes, there is tension and sex and all those good things, but the plot and characters are guided by the greater theme of isolation and our tendency to grasp for any kind of relief from the icy chill of loneliness. It's about fumbling our way towards a genuine relationship using an ill-suited set of skills we've picked up along the way. A number of readers have said this story has elements of a psychological thriller and my obsession with psychology and human behaviour has likely infiltrated many aspects of this book and it's struggling, striving characters. As a contemporary realist I've tried to craft people and situations that fumble toward greatness, or even just a comfortable life, despite or perhaps because of the intricate workings of our beautiful, deeply flawed minds. Like all works, this story will become altered by you, the reader, coloured by your experience, your hopes and your unique perspective. Ultimately, I will leave you to decide where it should sit on the bookshelf. If you'd like to let other readers know where this genre-crossing story fits in your perspective I appreciate your feedback and insights.- Laurie Varga
Laurie is a designer, a word lover and a professional writer who has managed to survive many bitter, Canadian winters, most likely due to copious amounts of tea and coffee consumption. She is also a Scorpio which explains a few things about her debut novel, Like a Bird.
Heavily influenced by realism and contemporary culture, Laurie is fascinated by the intersection of sex and psychology - two themes that feature prominently in her writing.
A scarred man, who basically doesn't speak, manages to walk into two parties, attract a random woman who has sex with him (despite his being basically mute and hidden in a mask/deep hood) at one and leave with a free sex slave from the second, free as in he didn't have to pay for her. I can't for anything find the appeal here between the two women and the man. Maybe it gets explained later on, but that seems like it's kind of the plot (damaged man sexually attracts two women without effort) and I'm not currently intrigued enough to stick around to find out. The writing seems fine though.
