Sheriff Bree Taggert and those she loves become the target of a family’s deadly revenge in a chilling novel of suspense by #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh.
After Sheriff Bree Taggert’s takedown of cold-blooded murderer Travis Ekin, his family vows revenge. Travis’s mother and brothers are every bit as violent, and Bree is in their crosshairs.
To complicate matters, Bree’s best friend, Dana Romano, walks into her date’s home and finds him shot in the chest. Dana tangles with an unidentified intruder, but he escapes through the back door. The crime scene is in another police department’s jurisdiction, and the lead investigator focuses on Dana as the prime suspect.
While Bree and investigator Matt Flynn work off the books to clear Dana, Bree’s family receives deadly threats. A second dead body and a shocking piece of evidence link the two cases. Bree and Matt must find the killer fast—before either case takes another deadly turn.

Catch Her Death by Melinda Leigh is the seventh book in the Bree Taggert romantic suspense/police procedural series. Bree has been sheriff in her home county in upstate New York for almost a year. The book is set in fictional Grey’s Hollow in Randolph County with a few scenes in the nearby town of Redhaven. Sheriff Bree Taggert and her team of officers arrest murderer Travis Ekin with the help of the new K-9 team of Deputy Collins and Greta. Travis’s mother and one of his brothers vow revenge.
Meanwhile, Bree’s best friend and former detective partner in Philadelphia, Dana Romano, walks into her date’s home, fights with an intruder who escapes, and finds Kent shot in the chest. The crime scene is in the jurisdiction of the Redhaven police department. The Chief of Police focuses on Dana as the prime suspect. While Bree and investigator Matt Flynn work to clear Dana with their own off-the-books investigation, Bree’s family receives threats from a stalker.
Bree is smart, skilled, honorable, and determined. She joined law enforcement to help people and that is what she intends to do. She can also be stubborn and is unwilling to fully utilize media outreach to help her politically. Matt is a former sheriff’s deputy injured in the line of duty. He was going to start a K-9 training program, but his sister Cady is using the kennels for rescued dogs. Matt is a great investigator and loves dogs, including his retired K-9, Brody. Dana is strong and known for her integrity. Being considered a suspect brings out a different side of her. Matt’s brother, Nolan, is strong, thoughtful, and nice, but can fight well. This book allows Dana and Nolan to come to the forefront.
The storyline is engaging, suspenseful, and includes some very tense scenes. The first chapter pulled me into the tale quickly and kept me rapidly turning the pages all the way to its shocking conclusion. Besides the investigation, readers get insight into Bree’s family dynamics and how that is changing. The author has weaved another installment involving family, relationships, balancing work and family, trauma, integrity, loyalty, revenge, a slow-burn romance, murder, lies, and much more.
Overall, this book has twists, tension, violence, and relatable main and secondary characters. If you are expecting a solid series that will have mysteries, suspense, crime, action, and eventually some romance, then this is a series that I recommend. Besides this one, I’ve read the six other books and the prequel in the series. I plan to read book eight this month and am looking forward to reading book nine which will be published in early July.
I purchased a copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date September 12, 2023. ---------------------------------------- My 4.59 rounded to 5 stars review is coming soon.
the setup… Former Philadelphia Homicide Detective Dana Romano, who retired and moved with Bree Taggart to Grey’s Hollow, is now trying out the dating scene. When she agrees to meet Dr. Kent McFadden at his home for dinner, Dana enters a nightmare, finding him shot and the intruder still in the house who escapes but not before he tussles with her. After calling for help and fighting to save his life, she then has to deal with the indignity of being a suspect. Meanwhile, Bree is grappling with escalating personal threats that she is forced to take seriously.
the heart of the story… I’ve liked Dana from the start, loved how she’s become a part of Bree’s new family and craved a story where she was front and center. This was everything I’d hoped for, getting her points of view and gaining deeper insights about the woman. The crime was puzzling enough but the investigation being focused on Dana heightened the tension and unease as it was led by the Redhaven police chief. Bree’s own threat investigation leads her down a dangerous path as well, jeopardizing the safety of her niece and nephew. Lastly, Greta, one of Matt Flynn’s K-9 dogs, is put into service and she’s a rockstar! She brought an element that wonderfully enhanced the story.
the narration… Traister is truly the voice of this series and skillfully handled a host of characters and plot lines. I enjoy her storytelling and how she gives a distinctive voice for Bree, Matt and Dana.
the bottom line… I had a hard time putting this down as the suspense was wreaking havoc with me. I’d hoped Dana would be given a romantic angle and I’m extremely pleased where that’s headed. As engaged as I am in the mysteries and procedurals (they were outstanding), it’s the personal growth of Bree, her acquired family and team in the Sheriff’s Office that keeps me moored in the series. Everything about it worked and I’m loving the emphasis on the K-9 unit.
Ugh 😑 this kills me. I blame Kindle Unlimited for the unnecessary pressure they put on their authors.
I’ve read everything Melinda Leigh has written. My FAVORITE part of her writing and what prompted me to read all of her books is her strong, kickass female leads.
Bree is too wishy washy to be an ML MC.
THIS STORY ENDS IT FOR ME THOUGH: why?
The opening of this book is about Bree’s BFF Dana Romano. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that this ENTIRE STORYLINE is about the death of Kent and who killed him.
So why… WHY DID IT TAKE 70% of the book to fucking get there ?? Enter two seemingly disjointed yet convenient storylines that Bree must oversee. We don’t get back to Dana until 70% when she sees her later MORGAN DANE.
Morgan is by far ML’s best character. She’s the only one with confidence and takes no shit, backed up by facts attitude. She and Greta, the dog, were the best parts of this whole book.
The action FINALLY begins at 80%.
This book was so frustratingly boring. So many pages covered procedure. Anyone who had watched any cop show (CSI, law and order, FB, et al) knows about procedure. Not to mention that this is BOOK 7 of a series. We get it Melinda - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop filling pages with unnecessary details.
This is where I BLAME KU. ML signed a contract for a 10 book deal for Bree Taggart. This book should have been all about Dana. BTW there’s ZERO development on Dana’s character. We learn nothing new in book 7. All details have been on repeat since book 1.
The major plot hole in this book was for motive. For all the police and forensic procedures mentioned and repeated in book 7, there seemed to be a lack of understanding about motive. Why the murder? Who benefits from the murder? What circumstances lead to this murder?
UGH 😩 I finished this book because I am a fan of Melinda Leigh. That being said, it’s time to abandon Bree’s stories.
Not much happens in most of the books and for romantic suspense?
We are missing two things: 1. Romance. 2. Suspense.
Sheriff Bree Taggert and her team take down wanted murderer Travis Elkin with the help of her new K-9 unit. Travis' mother and brothers threaten Bree, telling her that they will get even. Meanwhile, Dana Romano has agreed to meet Dr. Kent McFadden for dinner at his home. When she arrives, she fights with a masked intruder who eventually escapes out the door. Kent has been shot and Dana works to try to save his life. This incident falls into Redhaven Police jurisdiction. Chief Hanover is heading up the investigation. His sole suspect is Dana. Bree, along with Investigator Matt Flynn, work their own investigation to find who really killed Dr. McFadden.
I was so happy to get back into Bree Taggert's world. I've missed these books and these characters. In this one, Dana takes the lead in the story. We get her point-of-view about what happened that night, and her shock at being named the suspect in a murder. We also see that Matt's older brother Nolan may be a perfect match for Dana.
There was a lot going on in this book. As Bree and Matt try to find McFadden's killer, they are also busy trying to protect the family when the threats against Bree escalate. Everything is pointing to the Ekin family being behind these threats. But when Bree tries to interview one of the brothers, things go sideways.
I usually read these books on my kindle, but this time I listened to the audiobook narrated by Christina Traister. I thought she did an outstanding job with the many characters in this series. My rating: 5 Stars.
I just hate it when I get to that spot in the book, and I just can't put it down. Late night turns into early morning and I'm reading instead of sleeping. Luckly it's rare for that to happen, but it did with this book. I just had to know what happened next. The story grabbed me from the first pages and held me to the end. You have little clue as to the why and even less clue as to the who. That is the way a good mystery should be.
It's January in upstate New York and it is cold, really cold. Bree has finally gotten her K-9 team up and running and Officer Collins and her dog Greta have just taken down a murderer. The family od Travis Ekin is vowing revenge and Bree is taking the threats seriously. This is not a family you want to ignore.
Into this chaos, Bree's best friend, Dana Ramano, is attacked and then finds her date murdered. It happened in another jurisdiction and Bree doesn't know this police chief well enough to know what will happen. As it turns out Chief Hanover has zeroed in on Dana as his only suspect.
With Dana recovering from a concussion, threats to the family, a drug bust, another body and a missing dementia senior, Bree and Matt have their hands full. But when evidence is discovered that link the two bodies, it looks more and more like Dana is the target and she is in danger.
My thanks to Montlake, Publisher, and Melinda Leigh, Author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
Catch Her Death was another great installment in the Bree Taggert series featuring an investigation that hits close to home for Bree.
Sheriff Bree Taggert has just finished serving a warrant to arrest Travis Ekin, a rapist and murderer, when she receives a call from her best friend Dana Romano that someone killed her date and attacked Dana. With the murder taking place in another police department’s jurisdiction, Bree's options are limited when the lead investigator focuses on Dana as the prime suspect. As Bree does what she can to help Dana, she receives threats from Travis's family vowing revenge for his arrest. When another body turns up, Bree will have to act fast before someone else turns up dead.
Catch Her Death opens with the Sheriff's department showing up to arrest Travis and we get to see Greta, the department's new K-9, in action for the first time. I liked the handling of the Travis case although it did end up being more of a minor part of the plot as the main focus of the book is on the murder of Dana's date Kent and trying to clear Dana's name after the lead detective suspects her of his murder. The investigation into Kent's murder went in several directions I didn't expect and I liked how the author connected everything. The ending of the book is very well done with the perfect blend of suspense and action to keep you guessing on how everything will turn out.
Bree continues to be an excellent main character and I've enjoyed watching her character develop over the course of the series. Her relationship with Matt is great and they're in a very good place in this book. Dana has a much bigger storyline in this book than she has in any of the previous books which I was happy about. I liked that we got to know more about her and that we followed her for a decent chunk of the book. Her interactions with Nolan, Matt's older brother, were great and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of that. Collins, Greta's handler, is such a great addition to the department and I really enjoyed her assistance to Bree throughout the book.
Overall Catch Her Death was a fantastic read and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, On Her Watch, soon.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
Another great book in this series. Still very cold, I get cold just reading he book. Greta has proven herself 3 times in this book. Dana and Nolan … sitting’ in the tree…. Matt’s parents become grandparents! Read to find out how! Dementia is brought forward in this book, to help us all understand it a little better.
I don’t even pay attention these days to the blurb or the title when I spot that it’s by Melinda Leigh and it’s in her Bree Taggert series. I’m well beyond auto-buy at this point and would be more shocked if I wasn’t a hundred percent into the latest release- and I was. I tried to hold back and relish it slowly, but nope, I two-sat Catch Her Death.
Catch Her Death is the seventh entry in the Bree Taggert series that is loosely connected to the earlier Scarlett Falls and Morgan Dane series. Each book presents a new case, but carries on the character and relationship development to previous books. And, fun times for Morgan Dane fans, she gets a few solid scenes in this latest.
Catch Her Death has a blockbuster opening when Bree and several members of her department serve a warrant and get a pretty ugly customer off the streets. Yay for Greta the K-9 and Officer Collins’ getting their first big call-in to duty. But, while Bree’s getting threatened by the puss-pocket’s equally evil family members for taking down one of theirs, Dana’s date night ends in a blood bath.
Bree, Matt, the sheriff’s department and their families are all put on alert as danger comes from more than one direction and they have to solve two cases to keep everyone safe. I love that Bree is super good at her job, but she still has step-back moments when she feels the vulnerability of finally having a love life and family- people to care about who are hostages of fate. Matt is standing solid right there with her. In this book, it was grand to also get some scenes from Bree’s ex-detective partner now nanny, Dana getting a chance at happy with Matt’s retired MMA fighting older brother Nolan during a tough, vulnerable time for Dana. I hope to see patient Nolan win her over as the series progresses.
I loved seeing how both cases were whittled away at bit of evidence and witnesses and strong police work including lots of K-9 action along the way. I read this in the height of summer and the biting chill of an upstate NY winter was perfect seasonal setting for cooling me off and causing complications for Bree to save the day.
All in all, I was flipping pages and on a reading terror as the suspense grew steadily to the surprising twist and the big finish. Those who enjoy getting lots of depth with good policing action to their romantic suspense set in a rural county with an engaging cast should give this series a go.
I rec'd an eARC from NetGalley to read in exchange for an honest review.
My full review will post at Caffeinated Reviewer Sept 13th.
The main reason why I gave this one four stars was honestly I think Bree being wish-washy on staying sheriff and the fact she hasn't thought through the implications of that on her and Matt's relationship just baffles me.
The second reason why I gave this one four stars is that I had a hard time believing the "new couple" in this one. It felt like it came out of nowhere and there was no build up to it. I just wish that Leigh had kept that one on the hopper and had a slow burn romance or something there. With everything going on, it just felt 100 percent unrealistic, at least to me.
Other than that, great installment, I love this series and enjoyed the special peeks we got at Morgan Dane and her family.
Ever since reading CROSS HER HEART, the first book in the Bree Taggert series, I've been hooked. I've read books in many of Melinda Leigh's series and would be ahrd pressed to pick a favorite, but Bree would be close to the top. CATCH HER DEATH is book #7. It could be read as a stand alone, but the story will be much richer for having read the first six and they are ALL excellent books. CATCH HER DEATH brings back the family, whether Taggert, Flynn, Romano and the law enforcement family from the previous books and adds a few new members with Collins and her K9 Greta. This team pulls together to protect their own from a criminal family determined to stand above the law. When a criminal from the past inserts himself into their lives, you can be sure he will pay. The scenes with K9 officer Greta bring a little extra to the already great stories in this series. If you start now, you'll finish current titles before #8 is due out next year.
I do like these books but everyone is just sickeningly sweet with how they behave with each other not to mention that they are sooooo serious. We it kill them to have a bit of a laugh and a joke.
The mystery itself was pretty good, I could do without the Sheriff constantly being, stalked, harassed or being sent hate mail for one book. I do also like the K9 involvement in the story and could do with more of that.
Okay, how do I explain this? This series is like Matlock or Murder, She Wrote where you're like how much drama can actually happen in this small ass town, but at the same time, I WILL NEVER LOOK AWAY!
It's a comfort series. I love it. For the characters. For the familiarity. For the lack of pretense.
And I loved this one specifically because it focused on Dana - and we LOVE Dana!
Sheriff Bree Taggert is no stranger to threats, but now her family is being targeted by the vengeful and violent relatives of a man she recently arrested. To make matters worse, her best friend, Dana Romano, walked in on a home invasion at a date's house and was attacked by the intruder. When evidence emerges linking the cases, Bree and her investigator, Matt Flynn, must find a dangerous criminal before they strike again.
While the action is non-stop from the start and there are several intense and exciting scenes, the mystery elements are lacking. To begin with, there are very few suspects and not a lot of evidence, which makes the investigation rather banal. Moreover, the case is ultimately solved by luck rather than skill.
That said the character development is wonderful, especially for Dana and Matt's brother Nolan. In addition, the appearances by Morgan Dane, Lance Kruger, and their brood, is an added bonus. Morgan's ability to is a stellar moment in the book.
Overall, another entertaining installment, and now it is time to wait until May 2024 for the next book.
Catch Her Death was released on September 12, 2023. An advance copy of the book was provided to me for review by the publisher and NetGalley.com.
5.0 stars. Loved it. Non-stop action, and a surprise twist of an ending. Pleased with Dana's potential love interest in the making. 😉 And thrilled to see this series continue knowing there are at least 2 more Bree Taggert books to come. 👏👏👏
As always, enjoyed the animals, especially that canine Greta has now joined the police force.
Didn't want to put this book down. Now I'm impatiently waiting for book #8. Hope the wait is not too long.
It was crazy how this one looked like one thing at the start, but turned into something totally different by the end. I was glad that the threats were taken care of on both ends, but it was tough going for Bree and Dana for most of this book. Bree worrying about who was coming after her and how Dana was. Dana being off her game, due to being hurt and then how she was treated as the investigation went on.
There were a couple of bright spots, Katie asking Matt's parents a very important question. Dana and Nolan looking to start something, even as Dana had put him off in the past, but both realizing important things shouldn't be put off after what all happened to them. And the new police dog, doing exactly what she needed to in so many different situations.

Altra bella storia.
How on earth have I never read a thing by this bestselling Author before? Obviously I’ve been living under a big rock! I could not put this down and have just covered it end to end in 4 hours. It’s now 3 a.m. and I’m shattered but want to get this review done whilst it’s all still fresh in my mind.
So, I won’t ramble on too much around the actual plot as you can read that in the blurb yourself. What I do want to talk about is how well written this is. This is very good, quality writing. A few things stood out to me. The Author obviously does lots of research into getting things accurate. This covers everything from big details to the smallest. What that does is make the book very realistic and believable. I am really impressed.
The plot is interesting from the start and like I said, I read this over a few hours despite how darn tired I was. It’s not many books that can hook me that much. I loved the characters also, every single one stands alone in their own space. You don’t lose track of who is who and each character has a clear personality. Considering there are quite a few characters here that’s no easy feat.
Sheriff Bree Taggart is one heck of a woman. She can kick ass with the best of us. I love a strong female character but she has her soft side, her weaknesses and a lot of good in her also. Her best friend Dana used to be her partner in crime and has now retired from police work. I’m sure in prior books in the series that their story is covered over time. I had no issue reading this as the first book in a series. The Author puts you in the picture so you don’t know what you are missing. I will definitely be reading more from this Author. She’s written so many books and this is my first. My bad!
With a number of crime theories branching from the first very early one this is addictive. The plot moves in different directions then delivers on a cracking ending and a final reveal that I didn’t see coming. It just kept pulling off another good chapter after another. Did I mention I’m impressed at the level of detail included? The great thing is that it’s not overly done, some Authors write detail to the extent of sheer boredom. This doesn’t happen here. This is attention to detail to put you clearly in the picture. I’m a horse lover and noticed the correct horse breeds included as a tiny example.
This will appeal to a range of readers, not just crime fans. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and am hungry for more books from Melinda Leigh and blimey she’s written a LOT! With oodles of awards and bestsellers I am now no doubt a fan like thousands who got to her before me. Brilliant! Highly recommended and an easy five stars.
Many thanks to Montlake for my review copy. Out now!
Thanks so much for reading my review of this book. Join me as a friend or follower and feel free to browse my shelves for your next great book! I love to connect with other readers.
There's trouble afoot in the latest Bree Taggert outing. Why, oh why can't this New York state Sheriff take a break? All she wants to do is maintain a healthy home/ work balance, but there's always going to be an enemy out there placing herself and her family in danger!
This seventh venture kicks off with a blast. It's an ordinary winters Monday evening and Bree's just arrived on scene, about to arrest the notorious Travis Ekin for cold blooded murder. Meanwhile, a dinner date ends in violence for her ex-partner/nanny Dana Romano AND later on that night, Bree's niece and nephew are spooked by an intruder on their farm.
Within days, the Ekin family are out for Bree's blood, Dana has gone from sole witness to suspect for murder and a second body has turned up~ connecting this horrendous chain of events.
But with a vital clue taken out of equation, Bree and boyfriend/criminal investigator will be under immense pressure to solve it all~ before someone else ends up dead.
By now, I don't even bother reading the blurbs before auto buying a Melinda Leigh novel. I'm always guaranteed a fast paced plotline involving action, mystery and suspense, shaded by strong yet wholesome family dynamics. A year on after we first met the Taggert family, they're closer than ever and have overcome many adversaries.
I absolutely enjoyed Dana have more of a leading role this time: traumatised and victimised by her boyfriend's murder. However, the constant companionship of Matt's brother Nolan proves to be a comfort for the ex cop. In many ways than one 😉.
It was a delight to see Morgan Dane have a few scenes! I'm nearing the end of that particular series, so it was nice to check in with her. Fingers crossed that ML will write more of this character soon.
Catch Her Death is done and dusted and I'm eagerly awaiting the release of book 8, On Her Watch, out in May 2024. Eeep how will I cope??!!
Bree is a phenomenal heroine. She is strong and independent but not without faults and I love that about her. Matt is the perfect counterpoint for her and I adore the fact that he knows when to step in and when to simply be there for her.
Things are hitting extremely close to home for Bree as evil threatens her loved ones. This was a pulse pounding read as the story unfolds and pulled me further in with each turn of the page.
I am really enjoying this series. Each book is a standalone although relationships develop and change with each installment.
Gosh, it is good to get back in this series (thanks Everand for locking me out of books for a month...). SO nice to see all the relationships and found family and connections being built between all the characters - main and side. I'm just as invested in side character romances as I am in the primary romance.
This was good although somewhat predictable. I thought the killer was a reach in order to be surprising but I guess close to meeting the character. I also thought, the roommate moving on so quickly was weird. I get there wasn’t a strong connection to victim but it just felt too soon for me. I also thought the effects of concussion were drawn out to suit plot. Still an entertaining read. 3.5
Ms. Leigh just gets better and better in each installment of her Bree Taggert series. In Catch Her Death a murder hits close to home and Bree’s best friend, Dana, becomes the main suspect. Dana walks in right after someone has shot her date, Kent, in his home and then attacks her.
In the meantime, Bree has been receiving death threats in the mail plus vandalism to her home. While away from home one night, someone skulks around Bree’s home and terrorizes her teenage nephew and now the whole family is on high alert. The main suspects are a local small-time crime family, the Ekins who continue to show up at inconvenient times.
Bree’s boyfriend Matt Flynn, and his brother Nolan play big parts in this book protecting the family. Bree and Matt team up to investigate who really killed Dana’s friend since they know the Chief in the other jurisdiction is not looking any further than Dana. I loved the growing relationship between Bree and Matt in this book and the closeness and easiness they freely exhibited.
Nolan steps up to watch over Dana while she is healing and soon feelings start to spark between them. Dana has her doubts, but Nolan just rolls right over them.
There is a lot going on in this book with multiple storylines and I was on the edge of my seat a great deal of the time. The suspense was palpable at times, and I read this book in one sitting.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Montlake for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I gave it four stars!
[24 Sept 2023] I enjoyed this book, mildly. I didn't think it was one of Leigh's best, but it was okay. Engrossing enough to keep me reading, but low-key. Nothing really surprising.
What I liked about Catch Her Death: Melinda Leigh continues to deliver strong entries in the Bree Taggert series, and it's great to see her evolving as a writer. Catch Her Death is a well-paced mystery with solid character development and an engaging investigation. The suspense builds steadily with plenty of twists and tension that kept me hooked from start to finish. I loved getting Dana's perspective throughout Catch Her Death; it provided a fresh and engaging viewpoint and allowed readers to learn more about her. It was interesting to see her in a vulnerable position and how she handled being a suspect in a murder investigation. This added more depth to the story and made Dana feel even more compelling.
The multiple points of view, including the killer's perspective, added great depth to the story. I especially enjoyed seeing the investigation from an outside police perspective and watching how Dana navigated being suspected of murder. It was a unique angle that kept the plot interesting. I also appreciate that Melinda continues to keep Bree and Matt's relationship in the background without focusing excessively on it, unlike some other authors in similar series. This allowed the mystery and investigation to remain the central focus of Catch Her Death, which I found refreshing. As I continue into the series, Bree continues to grow on me as a character — she's strong, resilient, and dedicated despite the ongoing challenges in her personal life.
I also appreciate that Catch Her Death could easily work as a standalone since Melinda provides enough background to follow the story without needing to read the previous installments.
What I disliked about Catch Her Death: There wasn't much I disliked about Catch Her Death as I found it evenly paced, suspenseful, and engaging. However, it was missing that special spark that truly keeps me on the edge of my seat, desperately needing to know more. While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, something indefinable was missing that would have elevated it to a solid five-star review.
What I think would have made Catch Her Death better: Catch Her Death could have been even better with more high-stakes moments or heightened tension to deliver that gripping, "can't put it down" feeling that sets exceptional thrillers apart.
Would I recommend Catch Her Death by Melinda Leigh: Yes, I would definitely recommend this book to fans of the series and newcomers alike! Despite lacking that extra spark, it’s still a solid, well-written mystery with strong characters and an engaging plot. It's an enjoyable addition to the Bree Taggert series that continues the character development for long-time readers while remaining accessible to those new to the series. Fans of the Bree Taggert series or anyone who enjoys a compelling, character-driven mystery will likely enjoy Catch Her Death.
****
After Sheriff Bree Taggert takes down a ruthless murderer, his family seeks revenge — putting Bree and her loved ones in danger. Meanwhile, Bree's best friend, Dana, discovers her date shot dead and becomes the prime suspect in the case. With the investigation in another jurisdiction, Bree and Matt work off the books to clear Dana’s name. As threats against Bree’s family escalate and another body turns up, they must race to catch the killer before more lives are lost.
The Bree Taggert is another of the crime thriller series that I really enjoy. After Sheriff Bree Taggert’s takedown of cold-blooded murderer Travis Ekin, his family vows revenge. Travis’s mother and brothers are every bit as violent, and Bree is in their crosshairs. When Bree starts getting threats by email and someone is watching her home, there is concern the Ekin's are going to try and make good on their promise to make Bree pay. Meanwhile, her friend and children's caregiver, Dana Romano, walks in on a shooting of the man she has been dating. She is beaten and almost killed, but being an ex-police detective, she is in good shape and is able to fight him off. The crime scene is in another jurisdiction and that sheriff is sure that Dana is guilty of the crime, now murder as the doctor is now dead. With both of these situations becoming entwined, Bree and Matt need to find the culprit before someone else ends up dead.
I really enjoyed having Dana being a main character in this one. She has always been in the background, so it was her time. The crime was not an easy one to solve, as it seemed the victim had no enemies. As the police focused on Dana, the intensity ratchets up, especially as there are more threats to Bree and her family. With the K-9 officers and Matt's own dog getting involved, you know someone will eventually be caught, but the motive and final reveals were tense and had me on the edge of my seat. There is a bit of a romance storyline with Matt's brother and Dana, but it is just beginning and not a huge part in the story, but he does stay with her and acts as an added layer of protection when she becomes a target. Another great addition to this series. This is another series where KU offers a read/listen option. I love the narration from Christina Traister. She is the voice of Bree Taggart and does an amazing job with the voices and story. I recommend this book and series in whichever format you prefer.
I found Melinda Leigh's Bree Taggert series when I listened to the first book (Cross Her Heart) earlier this year. I jumped ahead a few books when I was given an advanced copy of this seventh book in the crime series, and I had no trouble falling back into Sheriff Taggert's small town life.
Leigh wastes no time setting up Bree's latest crime to solve - a murder that hits too close to home when her best friend and former police partner Dana is accused of murdering her date. Bree has also been the target of sinister threats and suspects a local crime family who has a bone to pick with her.
What makes this series stand out is the balance between the crimes and tension of this police procedural with the growing relationships of family, friends and even some (albeit totally obvious) new romantic connections. I love that Bree gets her strength from these relationships.
There is a lot going on with different plots that sometimes made it feel a bit muddled, but Leigh has written an engaging story with good tension, a hearty dose of revenge, and a great cast of characters (including a K-9 unit that kicks butt).
I eagerly look forward to catching up on the backlist books I missed in this series and strongly recommend this series for fans of Robert Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite series.

A great addition to the Bree Taggert series, (book #7, to be exact). Bree is getting disturbing threats against her and her family. Bree is use to getting hate mail, but when her family is threatened that is a whole other story, and Bree will do anything and everything to keep her family safe. Dana, Brees friend and housemate, is trying out the dating scene after a very long dry spell. Her new ‘beau’ Kent, invited her over for dinner for their second date, and when she arrives at his house, she is attacked on the stairway to Kents bedroom. The intruder escapes and Dana struggles to get to Kent, and finds him dying from a gunshot wound to the chest. The book is fast moving and filled with excitement. I especially like that Brees department now has a K-9 officer, Greta, with her handler Collins. What a great dog Greta is, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of Greta in future books.
Sheriff Bree Taggert’s family is threatened and she deals with it. I usually enjoy this series of books by the author, but I found this one to be a bit slow moving.
