Is there a crisis of democracy and participation? Is conflict an inevitable consequence of religious, ethnic, and social difference? The answers to questions like this, whether they are provided by academics, politicians or journalists, can be inconsistent and contradictory. Sandra Halperin and Oliver Heath take a step-by-step approach to research methods, guiding the reader through how to ask and answer questions about the world of politics and international relations. They present practical advice on how to be critical and rigorous, both in terms of evaluating the research of others and doing your own research project. An Online Resource Centre accompanies the text and For web links. For additional case studies, activities and assignments.
It does what it is supposed to do. When you are trying to learn about scientific research this book will help you get started. I found the part on textual analysis rather unsatisfactory, but it might help those who are new to this kind of research.
This is an excellent text, a very thorough and structured introduction to the principles of qualitative research, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It took away the wishy-washiness that I was afraid qualitative methods would be characterized by, for a technically rigorous guideline to designing a qualitative research study which was not only practically useful but also intellectually satisfying. I believe this will continue to be a go-to reference text which I turn to for a long time to come.
