Loved this book. 1863........ Lotties mum dies when she is 3 years old. growing up in an orphanage. Walking with her mother to the doors of the orphanage.... Her mother collapses. and dies on the doorstep. Lottie is pulled inside and begins to live there.

She is given chores to do like look after another little baby girl called better, But soon Betty is taken away and Lottie has to survive on her own.....

This was a great story, set in and around Durham in the late 1800's. The workhouse child is Lottie, who after growing up in the workhouse is sent to a house where she is to be a maid of all work and see to the families every need.
The speech in this book is often written in the local dialect, which could be confusing at first but I soon got used to it and it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story. A quick, light read and a very well written tale.

Lottie

I was captured in this story from page 1 Lottie was a workhouse orphan . She left the workhouse to work for a family but it didn't work out and she was rescued and worked as a maid for a nurse who was also her friend but things happen and Lottie had to grow up fast she struggled but did improve herself . Well worth a read I love the detail that Maggie puts in her books again we are in durham and surrounding areas well worth 5 STARS ..

Workhouse girl

This is a story of a young girl who was in the workhouse. When she was old enough she went into service in a coal miners house. The coal miner was a widow, he and his children treated Lottie badly. One day the coal miner raped Lottie she managed go runaway and was found by a friend of a nurse. Lottie was taken to the nurses home where the nurse took care of her injuries. Lottie went into service for the mother of the nurse where she was very happy. Her main thing was to better herself and she wanted to become a writer. She managed to get a job as a reporter on the local newspaper, where her writing career took hold. Lottie fell in love with the nurses son and they married. But was it a happy marriage? To find out I won't say anymore. Except its a brilliant story and has a nice ending. A must read.

A lovely book telling the tale of a child who starts life in the workhouse, who then gets sent to work for a man, his ill wife and there children. The story of ling labouring hours that a child/teenager had to endure in those days in the mining towns. How she escaped the evil man she lived with and fell lucky to a nice family who looked after her and educated her.the turmoil she suffered through adulthood and obviously a nice happy ending.
I enjoyed reading it but it's not very fast paced so that's why I marked it down. I don't think it's going to be everyone's cup of tea

I love Maggie hope, she is a great writer.This was a sad story, of hardships and pain. It is written well and you feel as if you know the characters. À must read. Very enjoyable, as are all the books by this author.

This was a very nice read and had me eagerly following Lotties life events and the Brass Jug had my better half looking at me as if I was nuts, as I could not stop laughing and when I did, the thought of it brought me laughing again and a gain.
This is the first book of Maggie Hope's that I have read and look forward to reading other's.

It wasn't first workhouse book I've read but this one doesn't have that much workhouse atmosphere in it except for the title. The story wasn't bad but quite predictable and simple. I enjoyed the book but it probably won't stay in my mind for a long time.
