About the author

Henry Guy Carleton humorist and journalist best known for his comedic plays. He briefly served in the army during the Indian Wars of the 1870s before going to work for the New Orleans Times in 1876. He became managing editor of the new Life magazine in 1883, where he wrote sketches such as those about the "Thompson Street Poker Club," which were illustrated by E.W. Kemble.
