This rather obscure novel was published in 1984 and felt stylistically dated in how it handled its historical subject matter. While slavery and the Underground Railroad do play a role, the focus is very much heroic white immigrants boldly making their way in the young United States. Of local interest to Northern Delawareans only.
I would give this book a 3.5 rating. It was an enjoyable book, but my enjoyment was increased by the fact that I grew up near the Brandywine River and went to church and school at St. Joe's on the Brandywine.
This book was centered around the start up of the Dupont gunpowder mills along the Brandywine. Although fiction there were many references to the surrounding area which made it all the more interesting to a native Delawarean.
