Insane cult trying to undermine the stability of society? Powerful mage whose very presence unmakes the world?

John doesn’t care. He’s getting married.

After rescuing Katrine, sealing himself into a mana-less state, and defending against the most dangerous beast tide the world has ever seen, John only has one thing on his mind. Getting married and going on a honeymoon. Oh, and trying to figure out a way to keep the world in one piece.

That quest will take him to worlds unknown, and pit him against enemies beyond anything he has ever faced. Thankfully, he’s not alone, and between Ellie and Ferdie, he has the best companions a simple farmer could ask for.

Disappointing follow up

I cannot accurately express how disappointing I found this book. All throughout the previous 5 books, I have found John's character to be domineering, hypocritical, and unstable. However, I checked it up to trauma due to his experiences in war and the influence of the dragon. When he forgave Haver—who literally tried to rape Ellie—without consulting her, I ignored the niggles of doubt about the situation. When he was revealed as being the Eternal Flame, I was willing to suspend disbelief and believe that there was something about his character that really did fit the theme of everlasting hope. Despite the relationship between John and Ellie being slightly creepy due to the age and power differences and pretty much Tradposting in book form, I was willing to keep reading. However, this book has removed all such pretense of acceptability. He continues to be an asshole to those under his care, even after he has seemingly resolved his issues and defeated the dragon. In one scene, when he is going to meet Eva about his marriage and whatever issues the valley is facing, he uses his power to intimidate the gathered refugees, who have been waiting for hours, and guards into letting him go through to her. He could have just shown them his mask to show that he needed to get in, but he didn't.

There are also a couple of instances that give me sexist vibes. Firstly, there is the consistent theme of women being stripped of power and men ruling better than them. Secondly, Ellie seems to turn to John for every single decision that she needs to make, seeming to ask for permission. During Ben's speech after their marriage, he states that he is giving his sister over to John, parroting a sentiment that hasn't been mainstream since the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, and jokes about his sister being a nag. I cannot make this up.

John, and more and more Ellie, also seem to have no regard for human life, killing casually and taking fights that they know will lead to loss of innocent life.

However, the greater issue is that when Ferdie brings Gorraleck—the beast who personally orchestrated, with the aid of her army, the deaths of millions in a genocidal rampage; who attempted to enslave John and had already enslaved others; who tried to kill Ellie and John and destroy their farm; who tried to exterminate the human population; the irredeemable big bad of the last novel—home as his girlfriend... both John and Ellie just accept it. There is no punishment, no justice, no repentance, no conversation around what was done and what reparations must be made. The story just moves along, with John telling the army that he has just fought and that was trying to kill everyone he loves and has sworn to protect to go home. Presumably, nothing about their society has changed whatsoever, and they're still enslaving people and continuing as they were. He even has a fun spar against Ferdie and Gorraleck after that. The same is done to the Mages of the Soaring Cloud Tower, who mind-controlled their entire organisation based on their supremacy as Mages. They get to walk free and even join as John's disciples.

A man who is supposed to be the living embodiment of the flame of everlasting hope cannot act in any of these ways. This shows a complete inability or unwillingness on the part of the author to engage with the concepts of the costs of war, loss, healing, and growth, concepts that are literally at the centre of John's character and story. It is a fundamental failure to make the story meaningful beyond "John strong and handsome and good and married". It would also not be so bad if he wasn't being presented as a literal Messiah, someone people look to in their darkest hour and feel inspired by, and was instead presented as a morally neutral or manipulative person. Will not be picking up the next book.

i think this mightve been the first book in this series i didnt wholeheartedly love. john and elly in candle scholar tower did not have the same energy and vibe that ive grown to expect. especially elly changing to be more violent was not great, but mostly in how it was executed. there was way too little introspection or talk between them about ellys first kill for instance. the story seemed to lack focus maybe as well, it read like one of those stories that doesnt have much of their own arc but rather is a set up or build up to a bigger arc or ending.

Lost me for a bit there

First two thirds of the book had me captivated, but it lost me for a bit in the final part. Lots of meta going on, a bit too much for me.

Preservation merits a solid four-star rating in Seth Ring's enduring Battle Mage Farmer series. This installment appears to be rushing to tie up loose ends, which might leave some readers yearning for more comprehensive world-building. Nevertheless, the story maintains its allure through well-crafted characters, an evolving plot, and gripping challenges. As we near the series' culmination, this book promises an engaging experience for fantasy and LitRPG enthusiasts, even if it feels a bit hurried in its resolution.

I'm actually shocked

I liked that even in the midst of searching for solutions to destruction Ellie and John made time for themselves. Not sure if it will matter to others, but this doesn't even have a fade to black aspect to the romance. It's very innocent in this department. I didn't expect anything close to the ending, and I'm exhilarated to even consider what can happen next. I enjoyed the foreshadowing, and I'm curious what the Seer sees and how her powers might be similar to Ellie's. Gorra's reaction to John's real strength is hilarious.

At long last, the world saving arc is over. What a ride!

Now I know what you’re thinking. “It’s over?!?!” Just this arc, the world ending/saving is done and now it’s time to move on. We got to tie up the loose threads, and I’m curious to see how things go from here. We also got some fun tie in info to the Forge Master side of things, and I desperately hope we get some more nods and possibly a team up at some point! Loads of fun as always, Seth delivers!

My attention on this series was starting to wane, but this book put things back on track. John finally drops the gloves and stops holding back when he needs to smack something/someone down. The world is not completely saved, but the lemons are squeezed mightily for what lemonade they can provide.

I'm not sure how far this story can go from here, but the larger universe is teased at so at least one more book. Don't drag it out, though.

OP story with twists and drama

Alternate universe, magic, LitRPG light, OP MC

I wanted to give this five stars, but couldn't. First, there was Torik, the beast general. Torik died in book 5, chapter 47, and yet was alive again at the start of this novel. The valley, too, only had a few hundred people in book 1, when John Sutton first arrived, and even though much of it was empty, it wasn't that large. Yet now we are suddenly supposed to believe even with the mountain cities and the underground tunnels, that the valley could suddenly house and sustain millions? In the previous book, the Cloud Tower had mages and thralls. The mages joined the valley, not a mention at all about the thousands of thralls with magic slave collars? What happened to them in the aftermath when the tower was effectively destroyed? We never hear about them again, and the mages who had embraced enslaving non-magical people change their belief system without even a discussion because John is so powerful? When Katrine first bought and took over the inn, Ellie made a big deal about taking some wheels of cheese as welcome gifts, but once they get talking, it never comes up. Did they simply leave them on the bar counter or take them back home? We don't know. Cheese made on Sutton farm was supposed to be a big deal; there was build up, and it was a nice bit of character exposition for Ellie as contrast to John's dour and emotionally shut down outlook, but it never went anywhere.

The story in general is entertaining, but details matter, and changing the situation details strains credulity. I'm willing to suspend disbelief, but there are limits, hence the ding. Otherwise, I enjoyed the story. It's well edited and you get a lot of story in each book. Onto book 7.

Power Inconsistency

I love a OP character and rapid progression. What I don’t love is when authors break their mechanics to apply rapid growth to those around them. John literally has a god tier beast in his soul, it makes sense that he is crazy powerful. But Ellie and the others don’t have that advantage and even with his help should have more realistic progression. It’s detracts from the books principals if everyone just jumps to being some of the most powerful beings around. The book even contradicts itself because they repeat said elementalization is not unknown and is even common. So that isn’t enough of an excuse for all his followers to be jumping crazy ranks. Yes the authors main excuse is that John is feeding his mana or giving it to others to help them progress but again that makes little sense. If it was that easy any higher tier 9th and 8th could make everyone around them super powerful with pretty pure mana. I also don’t like the inconsistency with rank because it seems even with purer mana you need to master ability and spells and that takes time for normal beings. I don’t like how the authors miraculously makes everyone around John a genius at progression. I’m all for John being god tier but I’m not okay with everyone around him pretty much jumping to 8-9th ranks in like a week or instantaneously in some instances.

I'm still enjoying this series although most of the challenges seem to have been resolved, (in this book they were barely an issue). So much so, that I was surprised that the series didn't end here.

I had a major gripe with the change in personality experienced by the prior antagonist, the Master of Beasts. She went from a psychotic megalomaniac to a submissive hand-maiden in the blink of an eye. Apparently, all she needed was a firm hand and a good "shtupping." Not my favorite misogynistic trope.

I did enjoy the new splinter-world set piece where the auction was held. It indicates the story may have great scope for future expansion – an almost infinite series of unique worlds, ripe for exploration.

Alright

It was decently, interesting, well written enough, and managed to do a pretty good job of keeping my attention. Not a lot of real tension though: the main character is too overpowered (and a bit one dimensional) to allow for that.

The scope fits the story.

Or maybe it's the other way round. This has the same power curve problems rife in Ring's series, but the setting manages to keep up I this one.

Wow, Preservation was finally posted in Audible, and Wow it's so good! And the audiobook was seriously worth the wait. Even though it was available in ebook for seemingly evarrr, even bk7 is already available and bk8 is on pre-order! Hence I really have a bone to pick with the powers that be! Ohhhh well that's neither here nor there.
Like I said Preservation was one of the best books I read this year! You'd think that reading about a seriously OP MC would eventually become boring after while but that's not the case. John can go from diligence farmer to full Battle Mage with a drop of a hat, and because he and his wife Ellie geared up in the last book they're able to hold their own as fight against time and other powerful mages.
Although I happen to love listening to Michael Kramer narrator of Battle Mage Farmers exploits. I'm seriously not sure that I'll be able to hold back from reading the next book!!! Okay, OK the next audiobook will released in October, we'll see if I can hold out that long. 😆!!!

Here's a quote I found:

“Well, these games—Othello, Go, Battleship—these games are all games from Earth.”

Much better than book 5, Storyline character development was much better.

Much better overall story and character development in the sixth installment of this series. Book 5 almost stopped me from reading any more of these books because the main character became depressing and stupid in decisionmaking. Also supporting characters came into power very contrite, without having earned it and started making the main protagonist look stupid by having all the answers in belittling the character, even though I know the author was trying to empower the supporting characters.
Book 6 turned that around creating a fun fast-paced, with thrilling fight scenes between the main character and the antagonists. The supporting characters came into more balance, and the overall story was just fun to read. I understand when you try to make characters very very powerful it creates the opportunity for a lot of plot holes, but book 6 seems to get through the improvement of all the characters and remain a fun story.

Preservation by Seth Ring is number 6 in the Battle Mage Farmer series. It is fun, though there are a couple of irritating elements. First, the threat from the higher worlds was kept alive mostly for plot convenience at this stage. There were at least two moments when it could have been resolved, but Ring leaves things unfinished for... well, something new. There's a hint here and there about a future arc, especially from the Tower. But, man, that last chapter does a ton of heavy lifting. Which is strange, because it did look like it could have been resolved earlier. Anyways, second, power scaling is getting broken. I don't think there's a single character associated with John that isn't going to be super special awesome at a certain point. Oh, and a new antagonist is introduced, but there's basically no threat from them, and their behavior is questionable at best... honestly. If anything, I expect that one will be resolved almost as an afterthought.

Anyways, this is popcorn LitRPG. Don't think too hard about it.

This series continues to be a big fun time, with lots of action scenes. It also continues with its flaws, not exploring any character or real meaning of anything too much. The writing style continues to be a bit weird with different POVs but not different chapters or breaks in between.

Somehow I still found this book a bit less fun than the others, i expected a bit more in the romance department. The wedding, while a nice idea with the flames, could have been a lot more romantic. It turned out a little too political for my taste. The honeymoon not being a honeymoon.

That ending is ridiculous but in a good way. The story wraps in a way that could be an ending here but with sufficient loose ends and foreshadowing for what comes next.

Overall I enjoyed reading and will read the next one.

This was a lot better than the last book and takes this series in some interesting new directions.

However, while it has done enough to keep my interest going in this series, it wasn't the slam dunk novel I was hoping for after the story that preceded it. That novel opened my eyes to a lot of flaws in this series, and unfortunately, this book didn't do all that much to patch the cracks. The things that I dislike about these books remain prevalent, but at least John is back to kicking ass again, and the story is meaningfully moving forward.

There's not much more to say on this one. It was an enjoyable book, and I do look forward to seeing where this series goes next, but at the same time, it wasn't so great that I couldn't put it down. It's a solid four-star read, but I do hope for better things in the future.

Author Seth Ring continues to roll along in his RPG fantasy series, with his battle mage farmer John Sutton getting more powerful--and giving him more powerful enemies to fight.

Sutton and his powerful magical friends Ellie and Fergie pop back and forth between their world and a higher-level world. There, they must deal with threats to their own world, from magical families and a supreme mage pirate, out to conquer the universe in general and John Sutton in particular.

Meanwhile, John's own world is falling apart from magical imbalance. John must research how to fix it and find all powerful shard stones to fix it.

Tons of adventure for everyone!

Better than the last one. The first book was the best and this had more or that type of thing. John did spend more time on the farm this time. He is also back to full strength in this book. I didn't like the last book as much because who likes to read about a weak OP MC? Now he is back to what I like. Straight up OP. Yes, the tasks that he has to deal with aren't easy, but it no longer seems desperate. Kind of weird to think that the apocalypse isn't a desperate situation. Things progress and John is able to deal with the situations in front of him. I am looking forward to the next one.

This series just keeps getting better!

This series is hot, great character building and story line. Action and human drama with self diving into ones psyche. This story gets you involved early on with the main character and builds further in depth. It is light hearted and comedic in instances yet heart warming. I have all the books so far purchased in hardback. Cannot wait for the next book.

Book 6 of Battle Mage Farmer. This book takes it to the next level and by the end I keep thinking, what more can he do knowing he has written book 7 and book 8 is in the works. I love this series and even recommend it to my own boys. If you are following the series, get ready for more action, more questions, more epic battles and more of John Sutton kicking butts and taking names. Super great read, pick this series up today.

Getting down to the finish line

The MC is still in the process of saving his world from entropy but must stand against invading armies, mages trying to steal his wife's affinity and of course the grand mage/pirate lord. Still, he's got some allies in the Candle Tower as well as Ferdie and his mate. I really appreciated the descriptions of what a domain is over and above mana or aura.

What began as a mostly cozy LitRPG has become a harder-edged Progression Fantasy series. The game elements have mostly been left behind and the actual story is being revealed.

The world is approaching destruction and it's up to John to save what he can. Opposing him are other absurdly powerful forces and the power is finely balanced.

This isn't much like the story that began the series, but it is entertaining and I'm looking forward to the next volume.

There are some questionable things in the story like how things were handled with the beast king and the beast army. John is really just cool with his former enemies and seems to regularly turn them into allies regardless of what happens.

John and Ellie get married and spend a good portion of their “honeymoon” in the upper worlds trying to solve the end of their world problem. But after John spends some time in some shards he decides not to try and save the world only his piece of the world.

The final battle with the supreme mage felt kind of sad. Like he should’ve just died with his world shard but I guess there needed to be a catalyst for John’s world to end sooner. The end of the world felt pretty anticlimactic as much as it was built up.

There are some deeper themes that could be explored but this doesn’t really seem like that deep of a series.

Overall, there is plenty of action and adventure in the book. It’s a fun and easy read. There are some hints of romance and some power progression happening in the story as well. Not sure where the series will go from here but we have some hints.

brilliant

Just continuing to love and enjoy this wonderful series of books. I picked up the first because I had nothing to read and the rest because I now had something.

A little bit of everything for everyone but pulled nicely together and different enough.

Looking forward to the next
