This Hebrew-English book contains three texts from the Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical books, or otherwise known as the "Sifrei Chitzonim": First Maccabees, Second Maccabees, and the Book of Judith. First Maccabees tells the story of the Jewish resistance against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE, and the rise of the Hasmonean dynasty. Second Maccabees is a historical work that covers much of the same ground as First Maccabees, but with a stronger emphasis on theological themes. The Book of Judith tells the story of a brave and pious woman who saves her people by outwitting and beheading an invading Assyrian general. Together, these texts provide a rich and complex picture of Jewish history and religious beliefs during the Hellenistic period.
