He Was Like A Young God, Tall and Blessed With Startling Beauty.
But Stephen DeBurgh appeared all too human to Brigid L'Estrange. Self-indulgent and too impressed with himself, the rakish knight seemed unworthy of his noble heritage. And yet...AND YET! Why then did she sense a power and RIGHTNESS about him that answered her heart's deepest yearnings?
Escorting the strong-willed Brigid across the marshy wastes of Wales strained Stephen's temper near the breaking point. NEVER had he encountered a more contentious yet arousing female than Mistress L'Estrange - whose eyes bespoke a destiny that would change his life forever!

"I like to think of my stories as adventures," Simmons says. Most take place in Regency or Medieval England, such as her popular series on the thirteen century de Burgh family. But no matter what the setting, you'll find interesting characters, romance, humor, and mystery.
This is Stephen’s story. Stephen is known as the drunk womanizer of the family. And it is his task to escort Brighid l’Estrange to her land in Wales. A good ¾ of this book is spent traveling and the other ¼ is a mystery (as Brighid is trying to discover who murdered her alchemist father). At first Stephen and Brighid seem wooden and flat as characters. Unfortunately, it takes almost the entire book before they slowly go through their transformation into believable and romantic characters.
I was also disappointed that we didn’t get to see any of the other de Burghs in this book. We see Campion and his new bride at the beginning and Reynold is also mentioned (I can’t remember if we see him at the beginning or not). Near the end of the book Stephen’s other (married) brothers are talked about, but it’s just not the same thing as seeing them in the book. Ms. Simmons is a very talented writer and I am loving her de Burgh series, but I’m getting a little tired of the hero having to escort the heroine somewhere.
Didn't finish it. Let's treat her like a stereotype, ignore her priorities, ignore what she says and assume we know her internal feelings! That's romance! /s
Překlad a slovosled jsou prapodivné. Přechodníky a rádobystředověký styl v kombinaci s výrazy jako „extravagantní“, „uvažoval v jiných kategoriích“ apod. Nefunguje to.
Hrdina je ukňouraný opilec a rádoby svůdník. Hrdinka je otravná. Z toho se moc vytřískat nedá. Ale Simon nebyl opilec, byl „nemocný“.
Hrabě z Campionu je najednou vévoda. Aby v dalších dílech byl zase hrabě.

This book should have taken me a day or two to read but it was so tedious that it took at least 5 (I actually can’t remember when I started it). I give it 2.5 stars. The two characters transformed over the course of the story and became more engaging and slowly fell in love. There was so much repetition that it drove me nuts. Yes, we know Stephen is handsome and muscular ad nauseam and he’s down on himself. Brighid is embarrassed and wary of the l’Estrange (good name BTW) powers. Good grief. Stephen is plagued by something that doesn’t allow him to sleep and gives him depression. So he drowns himself in drink. However, I never understood what the issue was. Was it solely that he felt inferior to his brothers, his infertility, what? It was never made clear in the book. I also would have liked seeing the reaction of his family when he came home a changed man. This is apparently part of a series but reads as a stand alone.
Deborah is wonderful at "showing" us how her characters think and feel and react. I felt I was involved in it all. This story was an interesting view of the illness of alcoholism. Though an alcoholic is always in danger of slipping back, the hero was portrayed as having reasons for it and recovering before the end, which fit the story nicely. Much of the story involves how the characters use and react to sex--in case anyone does not like that in a story is why I mention this--and Deborah is an expert at writing about it. I recommend her books.
There isn't much of a plot. It feels stilted. The drunkard is redeemed by love. In the end they find the pot of gold. Deborah Simmons normally writes really well. This book looks like it's been written by someone else.
This book was awful. I couldn’t even get through the first chapter. And I don’t like reading about sorcery or witches. Whoever wrote it was good book and lead me to believe it was a good story lied.
The hero isn't what's known as an over achiever. In fact, living under the shadow of his larger than life father and strong warrior brothers, the hero has always managed to feel a bit inadequate in all the things that seem to matter to his family. Instead, he's excelled at the wants. The pleasures to be had in his comfortable life. Women, wine and a general sense of freedom. When he sees the heroine, he sees a stern and plain woman who has the nerve to judge him. Charged as her escort on her journey to wales to claim her fathers keep, he takes an immediate dislike to the female and knows this distaste is returned. The heroine doesn't have time for luxury and laziness and when she takes one look at the hero, she sees a rather useless and vain creature who will only slow her down. She's not incorrect. If he's not stopped every few hours for a break and drink of wine, he's delaying their journey further by staying at the manor houses along the way to indulge in more wine or flirt with the females that reside there. He may be beautiful and he may be charming but to the heroine he is a disappointment and perhaps it's this stubborn dislike she has for him that attracts him so deeply. He may deny it and he may not completely understand his reasoning's but he sets about to tease the stern and sour woman, determined to a. annoy her as much as humanly possible and B. to show her that she's not as immune to him as she believes herself to be. Still, she wins most of the battles because despite his best intentions, her obvious disapproval of his behavior and the knowledge that she finds him severely lacking make him uncomfortable with himself.
When she recklessly ventures forth ahead of the traveling party, the hero must save her from a water rush and in the process, they discover themselves stranded with their servants and more importantly with the wine. This lack of the hero's go to drug has startling consequences on the hero's personality. In fact, without the general haze of being drunk all the time, he is able to see clearly for the first time and what he sees before him is a stunningly beautiful woman. What desire and connection he felt for her before has now been multiplied in abundance to the point where he can think of nothing but her. The heroine in turn is suddenly finding it harder and harder to resist her own desires as well. This man is no longer the spoiled and useless creature he was before. No, this is a man and paired with his newly discovered strength and his ever-present beauty she finds herself lost to the love that has been developing slowly over the passing days.
Wow, I did not expect this. One look at the cover and I anticipated a filler book, something to tick off in my reading challenge but one that I wouldn't really remember. I was wrong. From the start, I was hooked. The complex love/hate relationship between the characters was lovely to read and I felt they showed fantastic character growth over the span of the book until I could barely recognize them by the end. The biggest change? The hero. I did not like him at the start, probably as much as the heroine didn't like him. He was a very empty man when we first meet him, one filled with falsehoods and not much else. He was in a perpetual state of drunk haze and his addiction to the wine made him cope with his feelings of inferiority. The cover says it all, a charming and unrestricted man who thought of little else but wine and woman until one woman made all of that change. The heroine had an instant and jarring effect on the hero as much as he'd deny it. From the instant they met, he began to see her disapproval in him as something true and he unconsciously began to make changes because of it. But what really set him off was the lack of wine after the river disaster. I enjoyed and understood his character up to that point but after then, I can say that I loved him very much. The heroine herself was a lovely character. Sure she was stern and had a permanent frown on her face but she was exactly what the hero needed-just as fated decided. Together they have funny banter and more chemistry than any harlequin romance typically presents so it safe to say I was pleasantly surprised by this book and highly recommend it.
O Clã dos De Burgh 05 Um Lorde Para Amar. Deborah Simmons.
Not even 1 star. I hated Stephen in all the previous books, and I still hate him even after finished this book. Can't stand him at all. This book did nothing for me to like him. (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻ I wanted to skip this book but I didn't want to miss some important "plot" for the next book, so I just kept on reading it. =__=
Alas, a normal romance with a little supernatural thrown in. I hated Stephen de Burgh until Brighid transformed him. Brighid's attempt to adapt to a non-paranormal society is rather interesting. There is a companion book MY LADY DE BURGH, but I'm not going searching for it.
https://labibliotecadellibraio.blogsp...
