The Studio

Rate this book
The four artist Jeffrey Jones, Michael Kaluta, Barry Windsor Smith and Berni Wrightson knew of each others work; they often met at Comic Conventions where they were honored speakers or guest. They got tired of the strictures of editors, deadlines. etc. They rented a studio that has become the fabulous cluttered museum for the 'mystically deranged'( but productive) artist that it is?

Beautiful pictures, limited technique, a new group of preraphealites almost emerged from the depths of comics...

Even though sadly my copy of this books is rather battered its an incredible piece of work - its premise is to visit the work (and work place) of some of the lesser know but highly influential artists of the late 70s and 80s. You may not recognise the art work shown but you will most certainly recognise the style and see the influences in many of the famous fantasy classics you know. Unlike some artwork books where the best details are lost to a central spine you are terrified if pushed will cause the book you self destruct this book spreads them in full glory over the page with a strong enough binding to allow you to truly appreciate the workmanship and beauty of what is laid before you- an amazing book and sadly made all the more special as it represents an era now long gone
