She’s a small-town girl who goes to New York City to become a star. Instead, she returns home pregnant and alone. Her childhood friend next door proposes marriage to make her situation easier. She thinks of him as a brother; he’s been pining with unrequited love for her for years.
See where this is going? Yeah, so did I.
I will say, it is well written and (thankfully) short.
Raine is a dancer in New York City, but there are two big problems in her life right now. First, she's pregnant and second, the father wants nothing to do with the child or being a father. In a desperate times what's a girl to do except run to her mother for help, except Mom isn't home right now and Raine finds herself crying her woes to her dear childhood friend Gabe.
Gabe is considered to be some sort of saint in the town of Tyler. He's a firefighter who helps around the community in his downtime and is always there to give a helping hand. He also has a huge secret. He's been secretly in love with Raine for years and she only sees him as a brother-figure in her life.
But that doesn't stop Gabe from offering to help Raine out in her situation. He proposes to her in order to have her save face in the community. She accepts and they get married, but it's only pretend, or is it?
Now the father is back in the picture and says he wants Raine and the baby. Raine is so confused and Gabe is sure his heart is about to broken again.
This was a very sweet little story. Unlike some of the other books in the series there was no real mystery about what was going on or where everyone was, which I did enjoy a bit.
I liked seeing things from both Raine and Gabe's different perspectives and I loved watching them interact, especially after Gabe kissed Raine and left her all confused.
I found that I really liked Gabe and didn't find the father of the child all that interesting. I could see why Raine was interested in him when she was in New York and, at the end, could see some redeeming qualities about him, but other than that he was just a force for drama that helped bring Raine to understand her feelings for Gabe.
Overall, another hit in this series that I really enjoyed.
Wish I could give books half a star because this one deserves 2.5 stars because I wasn't too keen on the heroine Raine Peterson. I found her a bit too selfish and whiny. Gabe Atwood, on the other hand, was the perfect heroe, at times too perfect but hey, is romance after all and who doesn't like a swoon-worthy heroe?
A surprise pregnancy, a heroe to the rescue, a town with a big heart in spite of the annoying, meddling and gossiping neighbours and a happy ending. I'm still waiting for some action or more clues about the fire at the F & M, but nothing.
Maybe next installment will provide some answers since the main couple are Clint Stanford, principal of Tyler's High School and Marina Weiss, mother of Jonathan Weiss. Jonathan has come up now and then in previous books. He seems to be a young man struggling with more than being new to Tyler. A moody teenager isn't a big deal but this one I think knows something about the fire. Richard Jensen, Gabe's best friend, has a sad back story and I wonder if he is going to get a book. Enjoying the series in spite of not giving it a five stars.
