Timothy Zahn attended Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 1973. He then moved to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and achieved an M.S. degree in physics in 1975. While he was pursuing a doctorate in physics, his adviser became ill and died. Zahn never completed the doctorate. In 1975 he had begun writing science fiction as a hobby, and he became a professional writer. He and his wife Anna live in Bandon, Oregon. They have a son, Corwin Zahn.
This was a very, very, very long collection that took me almost 5 months to finish despite the high rating I've given it. The Rogue Squadron series takes up the bulk of the omnibus, spanning a full 35 issues. If I had received one a month as they were released back in the 90s, I probably would have not gotten so fatigued, because the stories are really quite good and the art is generally well done. That being said, this was maybe a little too much of a good thing and the runs started to feel repetitive after the first few. Branding the omnibus as a New Republic volume, while applicable in terms of chronology, feels like false advertising. The other comics at the beginning of the collection probably had to be in here because they took place before the Rogue Squadron series, but ultimately this just feels like an X-Wing omnibus that should have been self-contained, as good as it is, with the other comics included in future volumes. Going back and reading the best runs by themselves would probably be a whole lot more enjoyable than trying to stomach the whole thing in one go.
Issues aside, the cover art for the bulk of the later comics was some of the best sci-fi art I have ever laid eyes on. Take a look:
This volume is definitely a tomb and is not something you would want to accidently drop on your toes. Oversized from the original issues with glossy paper and 1300+ pages, if you are a Star Wars fan you will have plenty to sink your teeth into.
Set to primarily follow the exploits of Wedge Antilles (How did he get so popular anyways?) a bit player from the original movies who pretty much was the guy who blew up the second Death Star, this massive compendium includes Star Wars: Mara Jade - By the Emperors Hand mini series, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire - Evolution mini-series, Star Wars X-Wing Rogue Leader mini series, Star Wars X-Wing Rogue Squadron #1-35, Star Wars X-Wing Rogue Squadron Special #1, Star Wars Handbook #1, and more from Star Wars Tales. You won't be reading this one in an idle weekend. Since there is just so much here to digest it will absolutely be demanding a second reading, at least, in order to take it all in.
Set after the events of Return of the Jedi, there is a galaxy that needs to be rebuilt, remnants of the old Empire that still require dealing with (Including a certain blue skinned admiral), and plenty of other rogue elements looking to make a name for themselves. With the help of other memorable characters (Yes, the original trio show up) Wedge and his very capable crew set out to kick some Empire butt and to help those who need it. There are a huge number of story beats and plot points so I will not attempt to summarize, but I will say there are plenty of dogfights, daring getaways, force wielding baddies and a Star Destroyer full of surprise contained in this book.
Yes the price is a little high, but when you see what you get it works out to be a bargain, so long as your bookshelf is big, and sturdy enough, to hold it. I am looking forward to volume 2!
Marvel is churning out alot of Star Wars lately and i am here for it, May the force be with you and all that jazz.. In this omnibus are some of the best Star Wars writers out there, Timothy Zahn and Steve Perry are my favorites and Have writen the best that SW has to offer and they have writen some stuff in here, Xizor is back ! And i think i saw that blue mastermind called Thrawn. Michael Stackpole also does alot of stuff here as he is the writer of the Rogue Squadron, i have not read those novels but heard great things, and i am always down for some space battles. The art originally from Dark Horse is hit or miss , but this is fun stuff.
My favourite Star Wars Omnibus by a very large margin! This was the perfect book for me.
My review is biased however, because I read the Star Wars novels by Timothy Zahn and Michael Stackpole when I was a teenager and getting to meet the characters I've grown to love once again is a privilege!
The Mara Jade story in the beginning of the book is fantastic and it ties in really well with the Rogue Squadron series, which makes up the largest chunk in the book.
The Rogue Squadron series is perfection. 4 issue story arcs, which are satisfying and a lot is happening. Great characters, including the villains. The romance is also well done and rare for a Star Wars book. The art however, is a bit rough in the beginning of the series, but quickly improves.
This is one of my favourite Omnibus editions period. Oh and everyone should read the Rogue Squadron Star Wars Novels, they are fantastic.
A good collection of stories setting the stage for the expanded universe’s lore. We have tales with Mara Jade during her last days with the Empire, the follow-up to the novel Shadows of The Empire, and a very long run of X-Wing Rogue Squadron comics. Nothing is exceptional and the aforementioned series gets a little bit repetitive in themes and situations, but we get to experience the early period after the defeat of the Emperor and how the Rebellion and the Empire evolved in the aftermath.
It's been a minute since I've read it. I remember liking the Mara Jade issues the most, and a lot of the rogue squadron stuff was pretty good, as well.
