When Jenny sees the picture of a boy in a travel magazine, she is stunned. He is a dead ringer for her friend Rubina. But the boy is supposed to be dead. Ten years ago, Jenny had failed to save Rubina and the infant from the clutches of the charming leader of a dangerous cult who led his flock to a mass suicide. Are the two cases linked? As her past threatens to catch up with her, Virat and Jenny get involved in a cat-andmouse game that leads to a diabolical climax. Taking off from the notorious Peoples Temple mass suicidemurder led by the charismatic Jim Jones, and told from multiple points of view, Until I Find You is a grim and brutal thriller where the arid landscape of Rajasthan is as much a character as the shadowy dramatis personae.
As far as I can remember I've wanted to write a novel. I began with writing for companies and publications; always hoping I would write a book some day. After 18 years as a freelance writer I finally did that in 2014. My debut book - A Forgotten Affair was published in 2016 by Harper Collins.
I now write fiction, well into my second book. I enjoy writing about relationships and complexities in them. I believe the beauty of relationships lie in the complications because they deal with human emotions. I like to deal with these complications in the stories I write.
When I'm not writing I like to read, watch TV shows, films and try my hand at gardening.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The novel is divided into three distinct parts, each unfolding a different phase of the protagonist’s journey. Within each part, the story is broken down into smaller chapters, which makes the reading experience smooth and digestible despite the book’s considerable length.
"Until I Find You" by Kanchana Banerjee heart-pounding thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. With its compelling narrative and well-crafted characters, the author delivers a story that resonates long after the final page. The story is inspired by the People’s Temple mass murder suicide case of 1978. One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its well-crafted characters. Each individual is carefully fleshed out, with distinct personalities, motives, and flaws. Kanchana excels at creating multi-dimensional characters that feel real, and the interplay between them adds depth and complexity to the narrative. The way she has described the small town of Rajasthan is commendable. You will feel you are at the location while reading the book. The pacing of the novel is persistent, with suspenseful moments and unexpected twists strategically placed throughout. The plot unfolds at a steady pace, balancing action-packed scenes with moments of quiet introspection, and the author's ability to maintain the suspense and intrigue is commendable. Read if you enjoy: Cult-based stories Multiple POVs and timelines Rural Indian settings
When I picked up this book after reading the blurb, I feared if this might be a full-fledged cult thriller with the leader dominating the group and slowly killing them. Fortunately for me, the book offers much more of a plotline than just a cult-based story. Of course, the story is based on the outlines of 'what is a cult and what's it like to be in one?' But it doesn't end there.
Banerjee uses the rural state of Rajasthan forming a fictional village and it's a perfect setting for her story where anything can happen in the dry old state with too much history and very little literacy.
The pace and characters of the book are consistent with the flow and the reader cannot stop until they find out what happens. I devoured it in a single day.
"Until I Find You" by Kanchana Banerjee is a captivating fiction thriller set in the charming town of Bannod in Rajasthan. The narrative revolves around two key characters, Jenny and Virat, each on a personal quest for redemption and truth, respectively.
Jenny finds herself tirelessly searching for the son of her deceased best friend, while Virat, a determined police officer, is driven to solve the mystery behind the sudden disappearance of Jenny's crush. As fate would have it, their paths cross, and they find themselves reluctantly joining forces to achieve their individual goals.
The plot of the story is peppered with both expected and unexpected twists, leading up to a climax that will leave readers in shock. The author skillfully crafts well-defined characters who grapple with themes such as cults, rape, and the vulnerability of victims. Through their experiences, the story delves into the profound impact that people's susceptibility can have on surrendering their lives to others.
While it may not be the best crime thriller ever encountered, the chosen themes add depth to the narrative, making it a worthwhile read. The introduction of the three highlighted characters, Virat, Jenny, and Harsh, is beautifully executed, emphasizing their significance in the novel. Properly introducing the characters is essential for readers to fully immerse themselves in the essence of the writing.
This crime thriller explores the inner guilt of a woman who feels she has failed in certain aspects of her life. Despite her attempts to overcome her dark days and find new paths, life takes an unexpected turn, giving birth to a new suspenseful tale that seamlessly blends with the rest of the story.
While there is an abundance of thrillers available today, this book stands out for its clever narration and ability to hold readers captive until the very end. The moment Jenny sees a picture of a boy in a travel magazine, her world is shaken. The boy bears a striking resemblance to her friend Rubina, who is supposed to be dead. A decade ago, Jenny failed to save Rubina and her child from the clutches of a charismatic cult leader, leading to a mass suicide.
Jenny's journey to find the boy leads her to a quiet village in Rajasthan, where she crosses paths with Virat, a police officer investigating the discovery of a decomposed leg at a construction site. Are these two cases connected? As Jenny's past threatens to catch up with her, she and Virat become entangled in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game that escalates to a diabolical climax.
Drawing inspiration from the notorious Peoples Temple mass suicide led by the charismatic Jim Jones, "Until I Find You" presents a grim and brutal thriller where the arid landscape of Rajasthan becomes as much a character as the shadowy dramatis personae. The author's skill lies in her ability to introduce characters against richly detailed backdrops, making readers feel as though they are sitting alongside the players in this macabre tableau, breathing in the dusty heat of Bannod. Her writing allows the characters to come alive, daring readers to fully engage with their lives.
📍An interesting, descriptive and engaging thriller set in Rajasthan. Its storyline will keep you hooked while its ending will leave you shocked.
#INSIGHT: This novel is based on the cult of Jim Jones, the mass massacre of every cult member including its leader and exploring an alternate ending. What if the cult leader had survived? What if there were other survivors? Set in a fictional village, Bannod, the author sets the stage for a wolf to embed himself in a quiet village as the prodigal son of deceased, rich Thakur. Despite Manjeet’s efforts to keep a low profile, a blast from the past of his assumed identity, Sejal disrupts his quiet plans. When her questions into the disbelief that he is a father threaten to unravel his carefully crafted secrets, she ends up missing with her foot turning up at a construction site. However, she is not the last of the skeletons to pop out of his dark past. Jenny, a survivor of the cult that was supposedly massacred by cyanide at the hands of Manjeet turns up hell-bent on exposing his truth.
#REVIEW: The author’s style of introducing characters against richly detailed backdrops makes us feel as though we are sitting along with the players of this macabre tableau, inhaling the dusty heat of Bannod. Her writing allows for her characters to unfold and stand full-blooded before us, daring us to sink our teeth into their lives. The story itself is interesting, crafted with a cinematic gaze. The unreliable narrator helps adding to the shock value of the finale.
#STRENGTH:
1. The characterization of each individual in the book is captivating. 2. The setup of the people in the village of Bannod and their concern for a stranger is heart-warming. 3. Mature topics such as rape and violence are treated with sensitivity. 4. The relationship between characters Ramji and his illegitimate son, Tipu and the final acknowledgement of the relationship is heart wrenching. 5. The ending is unpredictable and comes as a complete shocker.
#WEAKNESS:
1. The author’s reliance on the Foreword, giving a brief of Jim Jones and the cult, helps to set up the story. However, it would have been better if the backdrop of the cult was introduced within the story itself rather than giving it away in the Foreword. 2. Though the last one-eighth of the book is a shocker, the rest of the book moves at a predictable pace, at times getting bogged down by its own descriptions. 3. The cover artwork could have been better but a blurb from Vishal Bhardwaj more than makes up for it.
#BEST QUOTE:
“You can learn a lot from the garbage a person disposes.”
#TARGET READERS: This book is suited for thriller lovers, people interested in Cult Operations and those who love a good story with a dramatic anticlimactic climax.
‘Until I Find You’ by Kanchana Banerjee is a gripping and fast-paced page-turner that captivates readers with its mind-bending twists and jaw-dropping narrative. The compelling characters and the spellbinding atmosphere it creates leave you on edge, eagerly holding onto the book until the very last page.
In the fictional village of Bannod, the author paints a compelling tale where Vishesh infiltrates the serene community, assuming the role of the deceased and affluent Thakur’s son, Manjeet. Vishesh aka Manjeet, striving to maintain a low profile, faces an unexpected intrusion when Sejal, a blast from his past and doubter of his paternal claims, resurfaces. As Sejal’s relentless pursuit for answers threatens to unravel his carefully guarded secrets, she mysteriously disappears, and her severed foot surfaces at a construction site. However, Sejal is not the only remnant from his dark history to resurface. Jenny, a survivor of the cult that was supposedly annihilated by cyanide under Vishesh’s (Manjeet’s) leadership, arrives with a relentless determination to expose the truth he desperately conceals and to look for her friend’s lost son, Harsh, who now lives with Manjeet as his son.
Driven by her unwavering determination to uncover the truth, she forms an alliance with Virat, a local police officer, to piece together the puzzle surrounding the enigmatic identity of the village Thakur. Together, they embark on a journey to connect the dots, delving deeper into the mysterious circumstances that shroud the truth they seek. what happens next and how the story unfolds forms the plot.
With Virat, Jenny, and Harsh at the helm, accompanied by an array of intriguing supporting characters, the plot propels forward, keeping readers engrossed. Banerjee’s remarkable talent shines through as she skilfully captivates her audience, offering tantalising hints and surprising twists that resemble an unseen painting that has been right in front of them all along.
While the foreword may mention the inspiration drawn from the Jim Jones’ cult, it is plausible to assert that this story would have retained its essence and presentation even without that reference. The narrative stands on its own, incorporating unique characters, gripping twists, and an engaging plot that would have captivated readers irrespective of the specific inspiration mentioned. The author’s skilful storytelling and ability to create a compelling atmosphere would have ensured that the story maintains its impact and keeps readers hooked from beginning to end, regardless of any external references.
For those who revel in the genre of thrillers and crime stories, “Until I Find You” is an absolute must-read. Prepare to be enthralled by its gripping plot and the mastery of Banerjee’s storytelling.
At a construction site in Jaipur, Crime branch inspector Shashank and his friend Virat, Inspector of Bannod are called when the workers dig a decomposed leg. The triangular nail polish pattern on the toenail and the bulging bunion on the remains of the leg remind Virat of Sejal, the spunky young woman he met in Bannod few months back. Before he can investigate the case further, Virat receives instructions from higher-ups to drop the case.
After living under a pseudo name and identity for ten years, Jenny reaches Bannod after seeing a boy’s photo in a magazine, a kid who has stark resemblance to her friend who died ten years back; a friend whom she could not save and regretted till date.
How is the chopped leg related to the green-eyed boy’s story and how do Virat and Jenny connect the dots, without having any formal support to investigate the case, forms the rest of the story.
The author begins with a brief on cults and a notorious real-life incident from the 70s which is the inspiration for this story. The theme of cults is weaved into the story by the author while maintaining the suspense around mass suicides that abruptly ended a certain cult a decade ago. The highlight of the narration is how the author connects all the seemingly disconnected characters and their stories at the end.
Halfway through the story, the author shocks the reader by revealing true identity of the antagonist, at which point I felt disappointed on how the suspense is not sustained till the end. However, the story takes unexpected turns from then on, with more and more details from the past revealed, with a thrilling pre-climax and a shocking climax.
The author sticks to the story at hand and does not include any unwanted tracks, there isn’t even a forced romantic angle to the main characters, hence focusing on the storyline all through. I previously read two thrillers of the author — along with the common element of suspense and thriller genre, the author always comes up with a unique element and backdrop that is well researched and captivating.
The story and narration take the front-seat instead of glorifying the characters and I liked it that way. There are sequences which can be guessed by the reader, but the shock value kept me hooked till end. Though the second half has the most action and feels a bit rushed towards the end with too many truths revealed, I enjoyed the overall adrenaline rush.
Pick this one if you enjoy reading thrillers, especially those set in rural India.

Title : Until I Find You Author : Kanchana Banerjee
The thrilling and dramatic thriller "Until I Find You" by Kanchana Banerjee takes readers on a gloomy and unsettling journey. The protagonist of the narrative is Jenny, who discovers the startling similarity between a boy in a travel magazine and her late companion Rubina. Jenny's search for the truth is sparked by the discovery, which is intertwined with the examination of a dismembered leg discovered in a Rajasthani village.
Readers are given the opportunity to view the story from several vantage points thanks to Banerjee's deft blending of various points of view. As police officer Virat and Jenny become involved in a risky game, the story is full of tension and suspense. The desert terrain of Rajasthan is brought to life by the author's descriptive writing, which gives it atmosphere and makes it a crucial component of the plot.
The investigation into the notorious Peoples Temple mass suicide-murder adds another level of complexity to the story. By skillfully fusing reality and fantasy, Banerjee creates a terrifying background against which the lives of the protagonists play out.
Each of the well-developed characters in "Until I Find You" has their own reasons and secrets. Virat's job as the investigating officer gives the story a feeling of urgency and mystery, while Jenny's haunted history and drive to learn the truth make her a compelling protagonist.
Banerjee's writing is captivating and keeps readers interested from start to finish. The story's suspense is maintained throughout because to the well-kept rhythm and unexpected turns. The devilish climax is satisfying and neatly wraps up the story.
In general, "Until I Find You" is a dark and suspenseful thriller that grips readers. This novel is a riveting read because of Kanchana Banerjee's mastery of suspense building and her brilliant writing. This unsettling story of secrets, deceit, and the search for the truth will captivate fans of psychological suspense and mysteries.
The story begins in a remote fictional village in Rajasthan called Bannod. This story is mainly around three characters - Virat, Jenny, and a secret from a dark past.
Virat is a simple and ordinary cop posted at a place where crime is almost zero and he is a bit short all this makes people underpredict him. He found a moment of happiness in the company of a beautiful modern hippie woman, which is short lived as she disappears one day. He is in search of her.
Jenny is a city girl who has visited sand and dusty Bannod for a change (as she says). This very reason makes her mysterious because there is almost nothing to see or enjoy in this tiny village. After some pages we realise everything about her (including her name) is a lie and we find her searching for something or someone.
Jenny's search, a resent crime (unnoticed and unregistered crime) and a decade-old past in the mountains all points at one person Thakur Manjeet Pratap Singh. Grab the book to know more about this connection, this secret, or this crime (or crimes).
What made me pick this book? My answer is the book's title, I found it very intriguing. Before starting the story the author speaks about a massacre in South America at back 70's. I knew nothing about it so I had to first read about it before coming to this tale. I found a pinch of this history in the book with a caption stating "What if..."
My dad inspired to the world of books and novels, in the same way someone will inspire us to do something everything. In this story the antagonist is inspired by a preacher (I prefer to call him psycho) to start a cult and that's the way the crime begins. In this story one wants respect, other wants power to control, while the other wants to protect a young boy. Just like in all stories I though this is a tale between the good and the bad but at the end the author reminds all readers that it is Lucifer's time. The closure was totally unexpected.
PS : I just loved the author's style of narration.
I have just finished the fast-paced novel by Kanchana Banerjee, UNTIL I FIND YOU.
I love thrillers and this one is based in India, in a state I have always favoured, Rajasthan. It was a fun ride, in Banerjee’s inimitable style and panache. The name leads you on, and it’s just right because there is an interminable search for someone or the other throughout the narrative.
As is the author’s wont, the tale is spun with gusto, and twists and turns, some guessable, most unpredictable. What I enjoyed above all was turning the page- because I wanted to know what would happen to Jenny (the chief protagonist), Manjeet, a key player and Virat, a policeman who wants to do good but is obsessed with his ‘chhotaness’- (smallness) and continually harbours a desire to look bigger, better, and sound smarter. Eventually, he wins over his inhibitions, and smartens up. That’s how it rolls.
I was not hooked from the very start, waiting for the story to take off, and take off it did, and once I’d bitten into it, there was no stopping me. I was engrossed and read late into the night to finish it. I had to know what twist Banerjee had looped in for the end. The twist was perfect. I enjoyed how it arrived via an Epilogue written in young Harsh’s voice. The boy is at the core of Jenny’s search, ostensibly to make up for and vindicate all the wrong done by the Cult Master, Vishesh.
Each character has been drawn with care. Every chapter leaves one asking for more. The visual appeal of Bannod, its setting is as dusty and sunny as one might imagine a small town in Rajasthan, and it truly captivates the senses, setting us up for the tale which meanders yet which one must ride to its finale. It is not gory, but it’s sensationalist and who doesn’t want to read a thriller with bits here and there that make you gasp. I sure do.
Let’s see what you come up with next Kanchana. Well done!
A good mystery thriller should make your guts twist and squeeze your brains, leaving your mouth agape at the last page with bone-chilling details. If you are reading a good thriller, then it should give you palpitations and leave you pondering over it for days. I experienced all of these while reading this book, which is why it is one of the best mystery thrillers out there.
Jenny, the only survivor of the mass massacre of the cult that happened years ago, comes to a small village in Rajasthan named Bannod in search of a boy named Subah. Subah is connected to her life in more than one way, and she needs to meet Subah to relieve the guilt of not being able to help his mother, her best friend, during the massacre. He lives with his so-called father, who is also a powerful and respectable man in the village. Jenny knows that the two are unrelated, and she knows why the man calls himself the father of the child she is searching for.
Meanwhile, an amputated leg is found buried under the construction site by the local police, Virat in Banod, who suspects it belongs to someone he longed for. He goes out of his way and against his superiors to uncover the identity of the amputated limb. He and Jenny meet on common grounds and decide to sort out the mystery together for their individual reasons. Are the two incidents connected? Will they be able to uncover the hidden motives and secrets? Will they be able to attain their targets?
This book is based on the real incident of The Jonestown Massacre of the Peoples Temple cult by Jim Jones. The author has taken her literary freedom and made changes to the narrative, and the outcome is definitely impressive and worth reading. The writing is crisp and vivid, and the twists are unpredictable. The story kept growing on me, and when I thought I got to it somehow, I was shocked by the disclosure at the end. This book is impactful and is a must-read page-turner.
Until I Find You has an interesting premise that draws itself from real events. Kanchana has painted an interesting picture of what happens when a person inspires a cult to commit mass suicide. The storytelling is quite imaginative, and having being set in a village in Rajasthan, the local dialects, food and the landscape play a crucial role in her storytelling. The plot moves quite fast and as a reader, you get engrossed in it till the very last page. The book starts with two very different threads, and you keep looking for a manner when they will cross each other and the real story would begin. There are elements of mystery that keep you guessing about the motives of each of the characters as you go along. The idea of two people looking for someone who could be connected has been explored in quite some detail. Anotehr aspect that I liked about the story was that there are hints being thrown all around, which start making sense once you read the climax. While the overall feel of the story is gripping, I felt that the book became a bit of a drag in the middle, and preferably a bit of police procedural could have added that bit of taste into the plot. The big reveal in the climax, however, was quite unexpected and in hindsight made that character seem important.
Coming to the characters, I must commend Kanchana for creating a shortish cop named Virat. The jokes, puns and the sarcasm added to the intrigue of the plot, and adding a bit of the human touch in the story. Virat as a policeman was quite effective in the story, specially towards the end. I loved how he is shown as a normal cop, one you can see and relate, rather than a supercop. Another interesting character in the story is that of Jenny, and the layers that come off one by one as you keep reading. I loved the way her perseverance has been shown, specially after facing what she faced.
In the small village of Rajasthan Bannod, you meet your Virat, Jenny and Harsh. The story begins by a chopped up leg found on a construction site near the highway. Two police officers land up at the scene, out of both of them one is Virat. Virat is undermined and bullied by his fellow police officers and the sight of a chopped up leg almost makes him vomit till he discovers something odd about the chopped up leg. . Jenny has traveled to Bannod in search of a man who ran a cult Happy Place ten years ago where the entire cult was poisoned and burned and while she escaped the leader didn't she wishes to take with her what the cult leader got away with -the son of her friend's Rubina. . Harsh is the son of Manjeet Singh Thakur who meets Jenny and feels there is more to than what he is able to see infront of him. . One sitting read. What a gripping thriller and one of the many qualities of Kanchana 's writing is the detailing that one gets to read. A thriller that leaves a clue in every sentence and the character growth and the colour changes of the character in the plot excites you till the very end. . The opening of every chapter is a search of itself where you don't know what you are going to find. . The class difference and the ignorance of the rich is also something the author hints at. The usage of hindi language doesn't become a hindrance while you are reading which is always refreshing to read. . Virat, Jenny and Harsh come together with the side characters who will be kept in the dark because they are the thrill and take the story forward. . Banerjee's brilliance lies in the ability to keep you hooked, give you clues and yet surprise you in her book like a painting you never knew was always there. . Highly Recommended. If you like thrillers and crime thrillers, then pick up Until I Find You.
