Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.
Read it in secondary school (high school) and for the longest time I desperately tried to look for it because of the impression it had on me when I first read it. For some time I thought it was H.G. Well’s “The Invisible Man” and planned to read it but I had a feeling after reading a couple of pages that it was not it.
Anyways, this is just like I remembered and it made me feel just as enthralled and engaged. The main dilemma that the reader is faced with is whether the protagonist is alone or he isn’t. The former means the protagonist is insane, the latter that the human race has a powerful competitor which threatens their apex position on earth. There is, I believe, more evidence for the latter position.
An interesting theme in this book is power. A thought I had while reading related to power is that any being that could espace detection by our senses and could hurt us at the same time, would dethrone human beings on earth as the apex predator.
What surprised me the most was the Lovecraftian (or cosmic horror) theme and the meditation on extraterrestrial lives.
Incredible short story diving into the human psyche and neurological disorders. At the end of the book the question remains: is the main character insane or sane?
