About the author

Debra Spark is the author of The Pretty Girl, a collection of stories about art and deception that will be published in April 2012 by Four Way Books. She is the author of the novels Coconuts for the Saint, The Ghost of Bridgetown and Good for the Jews. Spark edited the best-selling anthology Twenty Under Thirty: Best Stories by America's New Young Writers and her popular lectures on writing are collected in Curious Attractions: Essays on Fiction Writing. Spark has also written for Esquire, Ploughshares, The New York Times, Food and Wine, Yankee, Down East, The Washington Post, Maine Home + Design and The San Francisco Chronicle, among other places. She has been the recipient of several awards including a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Bunting Institute fellowship from Radcliffe College, and the John Zacharis/Ploughshares award for best first book. She is a professor at Colby College and teaches in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College and lives with her husband and son in North Yarmouth, Maine.

It's hard to rate collections of short stories. Some in this collection were fours, maybe even fives for me. Others fell into ones and twos, others I didn't even finish. Overall, great read, and interesting taste of multiple flavors of writing.

Non sono riuscito ad arrivare fino alla fine, mi sono fermato a pagina 130; ci ho provato, ma non ce l'ho fatta. La curatrice dell'antologia - Debra Spark - afferma: «Il mio unico vero criterio per scegliere i racconti per questa antologia è stata l'invidia». Ecco, io suggerirei alla Spark, per la prossima volta, di ascoltare un'altra emozione, perché, evidentemente (almeno a me pare così), l'invidia è, per lei, una cattiva consigliera. Questi testi (quantomeno quelli che sono riuscito a leggere) sono completamente monotoni, privi di alcun valore, mere prove di stile, non hanno "anima", non c'è un briciolo di dinamismo, niente: sono piatti, come il mare quando non vi è neanche un briciolo di vento (di aspetti di interesse, fuor di similitudine) a muovere le acque. Piatti come l'ECG di un cadavere.

Il manierismo minimalista in piena azione. Tolti alcuni capostipiti (Lorrie Moore, Susan Minot e David Leavitt), il resto è la dimostrazione di quanto sterile e ombelicale sia il minimalismo se privato della rabbia nichilista di Ellis o dell'esistenzialismo meditabondo di "Bright Lights, Big Cities." Metafore oziose e vuote in un bagno di paratassi.

un gruppo di giovani promesse (tutti sotto i 30 anni: "20 under 30" recita il titolo originale) raccolte da un'altrettanto giovane promessa. tutti più o meno allievi di scuola minimalista che all'epoca aveva dato vita al giro di giovani autori emergenti, da mecinerney a ellis passando per la janowitz, che andava per la maggiore: potrebbero essere quasi tutti racconti dello stesso stesso autore, e non si capisce se sia merito delle influenze comuni (carver su tutti) o colpa dello stesso tipo d'insegnamento. spicca, su tutti e tutte, david leavitt, destinato a far cose migliori, e un paio di altre cose non sono male ("il graffito di caleb pellor", il cinismo di "come allevarli"), ma nel complesso -per dire- c'era più varietà e (diciamolo, su!) racconti interessanti nelle raccolte di giovani esordienti curate qui in italia da tondelli. qui sembra di aver a che fare con certe raccolte di piccole indie musicali che compri per curiosità o la presenza di uno o due artisti che già conosci ma che alla fine ascolti un paio di volte per poi dimenticarti di averle in casa...
