A much-needed work focusing on one of the e-community’s hottest topics, this is the second edition of a book that covers both video and audio podcasts, as well as updated software and resources. This edition is much improved and updated to cover the latest gear that readers and podcasters want to learn about. Critically, the book also shows how to create video as well as audio podcasts. It provides all the reader needs to know to get heard and now seen online, regardless of his or her level of experience and technical knowledge.
For a book published in 2005, it is actually quite useful and has a bunch of applicable information even now in 2018. Podcasting Solutions is one of a stack of books a co-worker let me borrow for a work project, and I was surprised by how much I have used it.
What this volume excels at is providing an intuitive, in-depth technical walk-through of recording equipment, the recording process, the audio editing process, and setting up a RSS feed. It uses images well to convey 'scientific' ideas and explanations. Perhaps my only critique is that the flow is a bit dry, and while I enjoyed its direct and technical way of communicating processes, I can understand how that could be unappealing to others.
Overall, if you have a need to learn more about the technical side to podcasting, this is a solid how-to book.
This book comes with a CD loaded with a good selection of podcasting software, but while the CD is a great idea, a reader might be better served reading up on the actual process elsewhere. The trouble with this particular book is that while it seems to be targeting the podcasting novice, the dry, verbose textbook-style delivery is not very encouraging and strips some of the fun out of what should be an exciting and dynamic process. There are some very good, useful practical solutions here and the process for setting up a podcast is all there, but all of that is going to be of no use if the average reader isn't motivated enough to plow through it.
For the skimmer, Section 4, "Planning Your Podcast" may be the strongest with its solid advice on incorporating music without falling afoul of copyright and how to structure a show to create a stronger program.
This book was my bible when setting up my (new) podcast. Even though I got the new edition, some of the software and website information was already out of date, but it was still an incredibly valuable resource!
Pretty good read if you are thinking about doing a podcast and covers all the basics nicely. This one has a CD with some software included. If you are wondering what is on the CD there is a page with the information. ~Ashley
