The perfect gift for any Irish-American interested in Irish heritage, this charmingly illustrated history of the Emerald Isle shares the unique customs, sights, and sounds of each county of Ireland.
i have really specific purposes for reading this but it felt more like a travel guide than a history text, which isn't very useful to me. some counties get broad, sweeping overviews of its history and culture, while others seem to fixate exclusively on a single story, event, or person. also lots of information on birds
2.5 stars A slightly dated volume that is an odd mix of politics (and not well-disguised political opinion by some of the writers), history and tourist information. I did like seeing how each particular county is unique, especially the lesser known ones.
I confess that I did not read the entire book, but I did look at each page. I enjoyed the photos and captions which I found informing.
My main interest was in Belfast and County Down so I read everything in those sections in hopes of learning more for my genealogical pursuits.
I'm glad I checked this book out of the library, and I will continue my search for information on the history of County Down and Belfast, especially the history before and during the potato famine.
