I don't know what's wrong with that cover. At first glance, I thought it was OG Marauder Harpoon, with an axe or harpoon to grind, but it's just Arcade.
A solid follow-up on the previous issue! I'm 100% in on this storyline. The involvement of Jason Wyngarde and Arcade makes things deliciously unpredictable.
- Still need a bit more explanation on this “Psylocke and Greycrow are growing closer than ever” thing. Really. You can't just dump one hint of a new relationship between two highly unlikely murderous duo and expect your readers to simply accept it as an established fact. We. Want. Deets!
- Also need a convincing explanation on how Charles Xavier with his powerful Cerebro helmet and telepathic sweeps didn't catch any of the psychic happenings on Krakoa or involving Krakoans. Heck, I think that's one of the biggest questions that Hickman & co need to address post HoX / PoX. I'm definitely questioning the current arcs in the X-Factor with Morrigan / Siryn and the New Mutants from this angle as well.
One of the better issues of Hellions in a while. Really more of a 3.5. I could almost give it 4 stars, except that I still find most of the characters asinine.
Since when was Madelyn Pryor the great love of Alex's life? They had an affair 30 years ago. They had a very nice little story about 5 or 6 issues ago in Hellions. But, it's not like they were together as a couple for any extended period of time. If Alex were to be given fantasies about anyone, it would probably be either Polaris or Wasp.
I read all of Avengers Arena, so I'm aware of Arcade and Miss Locke in their latest iteration of Arcade's psychopathy. That series was mostly trying to appeal to Hunger Games fans, and any other YA audiences obsessed with dystopian societies. Bit of a bore to those of us who are adults and aren't swept up in the fad.
Clones, clones everywhere...and Arcade wants a slice of the action!
See, that's why he's kidnapped Mr Sinister, and Sinister is quite happy to provide...but Arcade feels he gave in too easily, so he's going to torture him first anyway.
I've always found it hard to take Arcade seriously as a villain, he just never felt like a real threat in the past. He's supposed to be a genius assassin, an experienced killer, but all of his plans fail, always. But here, finally, he seems dangerous...probably because he has Mr Sinister strapped to a table while he pulls teeth out of his mouth. It's all very bloody. He's also successfully blackmailing Mastermind to help him, because he has one of his daughters, and he's set up an elaborate system to ensure that Mastermind doesn't use his powers on him (and if he does his daughter dies). It's an elaborate scheme, but that's what Arcade's supposed to be good at, and it's refreshing to see him actually being good at it.
Oh, yeah, and I had been thinking "Isn't Miss Locke dead?" But there's a line in this which suggests that the Miss Locke in this might not actually be Miss Locke...so it's good to know the creative team have been paying attention.
There's a lot more to this issue than that, and it's at times dark and at times funny...and at times darkly funny. Plus, you know, it has gorgeous art.
Absolutely loving this Arcade storyline: it's brutal and manages to still be hilarious.
I'm also paying attention and taking Arcade more seriously as a villain, so that's something. Once again, beautiful art, fantastic script, I'm chomping at the bit to get to 11, so I can't be bothered with a longer review.
Issue #10 and still my favorite X-book. This is what Arcade is like? Oh wow he's such a messed up villain! Fun to read. I can't wait to see the shitshow fall out from Mastermind's mind breaking! Their nightmares are sad including the nice ones.
Such a delight every time I read one of these issues. Sinister being a Snarky loveable piece of shit is so good and watching everyone live out their dreams turned nightmares is intriguing. While it felt a bit slow on plot it was so fun to read. A 4 out of 5.
Begrudging 4 stars. I don't know. I've been struggling to enjoy Hellions lately. It's nice to see it return to the more devious and ominous tone that the series began with. But what does it say when this was achieved through the villains while our "heroes" are incapacitated? Granted, some of this was accomplished by delving into the dark recesses of their minds. But I feel kind of cheated. This is more what I want this book to be on a consistent basis but by way of its main characters. Maybe it's just my overall frustration with this title. Maybe I'm anticipating disappointment with the next issue or when this storyline ends. So while I definitely enjoyed this more than the last several issues, I'm kind of mad about it.
Carrying on from the end of the last issue, the latest instalment of Hellions sees Mr Sinister and his team in the clutches of the villain Arcade, and we get to see both the dreams and the nightmares that fill the team's minds.
Not a huge amount happens in this issue action wise, so if you've come to it expecting big explosions and fist fights it's a bit early for that; but knowing this series that's probably going to be the next issue. Instead, we get to peek behind the curtain a little, and see what's going on in the characters heads thanks to the team up between Arcade and Mastermind, who actually make for a pretty dangerous pair, combining Arcade's murder tech and Mastermind's telepathic powers to create some truly sadistic scenarios.
Rather than jumping straight in to the torture for the Hellions the bad guys decide to make things worse for them first, letting them experience scenarios that make them happy. Psylocke is spending time with her daughter, Wild Child is the biggest and baddest mutant around, frightening Wolverine and Sabertooth just by his presence. Scalphunter is back in the military and manages to save his teammates from the enemy, being hailed as a hero in the process. Nanny gets dozens of mutant children to take care of, whilst Orphan-Maker gets two Nanny's to take care of him. Empath is the centre of attention at a dinner party, surrounded by his family and friends. And Havok gets to be with Madelyn and have a happy relationship.
Unfortunately, these illusions are being made by bad guys, so of course things go horribly wrong for them all as they're suddenly attacked by their loved ones, discover that they've killed their friends, or made into mindless slaves. This is definitely the most intricate, and the most personally harmful of Arcades games in a long while, and we can only hope that when the team eventually break out they're going to make him pay for this one.
Whilst the team are trapped inside their own personal illusions we're left with Arcade personally tormenting Mr Sinister, and it makes for some of the best parts of the book. Since this series began I've found that Sinister quite easily steals most of the scenes he's in, and he's quickly become a favourite of mine; and this issue is no exception. Unfortunately for him, Arcade isn't a fan of his sarcasm and sass, and decides to torture the man in a scene that's actually quite brutal. If you've got a phobia of dentists or losing teeth this is definitely an issue that's going to freak you out.
Even though not a whole lot happened in this issue to move the story forward it was a lot of fun to spend some time with the different members of the team, to see how their minds work, and to learn a little more about them. The Hellions are quickly turning into one of the most interesting groups on Krakoa, and any time spent digging a little deeper into these characters is always going to make for a great issue.
This was very good. In the inconsistent world of Hellions this was top draw stuff.
The characters each going through their own Mastermind manipulations was interesting enough as it was. Then we get the main course of the interaction between Sinister and Arcade which was at times hilarious and others about as dark as I've seen a marvel comic go.
Now that’s what I’m talking about! Break through the illusion. 😂 @ Sinister. He always a trip. Not to mention the insanity of Arcade brings it all together.
