It may look lame to post the Bible as one of my 2025 reading challenge books, and indeed, I’ve been reading, studying, and teaching the Bible for over 40 years. This year was different, however, because it represents a sustained effort to slowly and consistently read every word from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22 on a day-by-day basis. Not a day nor a word was missed. I’ve done this before using the NLT audio version, but in 2025, I bought a new ESV Bible expressly for this purpose. It’s now quite extensively underlined.
This isn’t to boast, but rather to commend the daily reading of Scripture to anyone who considers him or herself a Christian. It’s really rewarding to set and keep a daily rhythm, and It’s amazing how much even a seasoned reader discovers every time they take up and read!
I use the ESV (as does my church) because its cadence and syntax are closer to the more word-for-word translations I grew accustomed to in my youth, the KJV and the NASB. Though we used the NIV in seminary, for me it never had the “ring” of poetic prose inherent in other versions, ESV included.
Though I could lament the glut of specialty Bibles in today’s marketplace, I’d still say Crossway has provided a great service with their study Bibles. I have copies of several of them and have used them in study and teaching (especially the ESV Study Bible), but I needed a simple layout (and large print) with a durable leather cover for this year’s devotional reading.
I hope this short review encourages someone to take the plunge into the deep, clear water of daily Bible reading in pursuit of fellowship with the Divine Author. It could be a life-changing experience.
