A newly crowned king. An inexperienced queen. An ancient law that shatters their lives—and their desert kingdom.
Visitors from every land and province are traveling to Toresz for the new king’s coronation. The crown princess of neighboring Censarra arrives early. A day early, in fact. Forcing her way into the dress rehearsal, she delivers shocking news: according to the arcane laws governing royal marriage and succession, the new king and crown princess are betrothed!
Solace faces a gut-wrenching choice. Should she remain in Toresz as the king’s paramour, living a life in the shadows, or strike out on her own? If she leaves, what becomes of the people who rely on her water divining skills for survival? And what becomes of the man who’s captured her heart?

I enjoyed the first book and the concept, but 7 chapters in to this one, I find I cannot, in good conscience, finish this one. I’m honestly surprised this book received the 2026 Christlit books award. The author chose to sacrifice Christian morals for the sake plot and spectacle. While this book and the previous one are clean (as far as I read), the author chose to put the characters in a situation where it turns out they had indeed sinned (details with spoilers in a separate paragraph below). While the characters did not know they were doing anything wrong, the author chose to write it in a way where they had transgressed. This does not reflect Christ-like character, and I cannot, in good conscience, continue reading this book.
This is not the only reason I am surprised it received the Christlit book award. The MMC does not reflect good Christian morals, or good morals in general. I hope he will acknowledge the error in his actions and thoughts later, in fact I believe he will, but it is hard to read evil on the page. It is only harder and more surprising knowing this book had received this award. I understand that characters have to learn and grow, but at this point he should be past this point in his character development as it no minor issue, but a basic misunderstanding of what is good and right.
This was really the final straw. I had been seeing red flags and issues throughout the first book and the prequel, but I was willing to overlook them. In all honesty, I may have been more willing to overlook this were it not claiming to be a Christian book, but it was and so I wasn’t. I would not recommend this book or any of the others.
***details (spoilers, though none not provided in the blurb) below this point***
For those curious about the specifics of what I take issue with, it is as follows: the marriage contract between the FMC and MMC is invalid, therefore they have slept together outside of marriage, though they thought they were married. They were not aware of this, but still, the author chose to write it this way. There are other ways to build a plot and create tension, and causing your main characters to not actually be married when they had already “consummated” the marriage is not one fit for a book claiming to be Christian. What makes it worse, is after this is discovered, the FMC realizes she cannot stay (he has a pervious betrothal agreement he must uphold since they weren’t technically married), but he wants her to stay as his mistress and is very angry when she opts to do the right thing and leave.
Rating: 4.5/5 I received an eARC for my honest opinion.
Now that the new King of Toresz will be crowned, and everyone is loving their new queen Solace, but there is something in the air that just feels wrong. Its not until Princess MaudeLyn of Censarra comes to the coronation with news of her own that everything Rhees and Solace have put together might come to an end. Having to leave Rhees’ side and go on her own way, she finds herself at a crossroads. What way will she take: to fight for the land and people who she has come to love or to return home to her father?
This was a wonderful way to conclude this great duology. The war is finally over, but is it really? This book is just as beautiful as the first one, you can see the author’s growth from the first book into this one. I enjoy the way Cabell writes, it’s so easy to read, a pace that is satisfying (ups and downs all in the right places), the way that the characters' emotions come across the pages (it really helps the readers to be able to connect with them). I still really enjoy the magic system in this book, and I loved that you got to see Solace divining for water and to see the country folk still loving her.
The plot was amazingly wrapped up, but it was the characters still that really made this book shine. I loved and still do love Solace, even when she was hurting from the drama that happened in the capital, she still hung her head up high and when the choice came to helping the country folk or to let them down, she did what was right and not just because they viewed her the queen, but for the beauty in her that they all could see. I loved that she is still a strong character and even a stronger female character in this book. I loved that in the midst of danger and fear of her life she still thought of the others, and she made sure that no matter what happened that the innocent would have a great life.
Rhees, he is such a big fat poopyhead (that was the best word I could think of), I am so happy how the book turned out, but I really wish that he would have done more or at least fought harder for Solace and the life that he really wanted but in the end everything worked out and to see that Solace was the one that made that happen was even better.
I could go on and on, but just pick up the first book because I promise you will not be disappointed in this duology. This is perfect for the ones that like YA fantasy, romance, action, magic, understanding one’s destiny and duty and of course a good old butt kicking.
I want to thank NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the opportunity to review this book.
The Way of Water is the conclusion to the Lightness of Water by Toni Cabell. The enemy from the first book has been subdued but the peace and freedom that it brought does not last for long. Problems come in several areas separating Rhees and Solace. A fresh, wildly clever, and impossible to put down sequel to their story. In the battle of good overcoming evil, there is sacrifice, love, loss, and joy. It may be fine to read this second book alone but I found reading the books in order enhanced my enjoyment of this book.
I highly recommend this young adult fantasy book to readers of all ages. Fans of Amberlyn Holland, Paula Brackston, and Katherine Arden will love this author's works. These are other writers whose books I enjoy. Now adding to that list, I want to read anything I can get my hands on written by Toni Cabell.
An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This read gave me an idea of what it means to live in a very detailed and politically intricate fantasy world. The dynamic between Solace, Rhees, and Arik is definitely where the central focus is on. This takes place within a plot that involves royal marriage, succession, and the challenges of governance. Having said this there is a lot of action throughout the book. So, I can guarantee you that you won’t be bored. I appreciated the writing style that is quite descriptive. It paints very lively scenes and character interactions. And it also delves into the internal conflicts of the protagonists. I loved the fact that the dialogue effectively transmits tension and emotion. It somehow contributes to the complexity of the narrative. I can say I did not get bored for even a second. It is a very engaging read with an entertaining plot and compelling characters.
In this book, the author masterfully weaves a tapestry of fantasy, romance, and political intrigue. The characters, particularly the resilient Solace and the conflicted Rhees navigate a complex web of destiny and duty. As the story hurtles toward its conclusion, the reader is kept on the edge, wondering if Solace will stay and fight for her adopted homeland and the newly crowned king. This final installment ensures that fans of the Water Witch series will not be disappointed, delivering a satisfying and compelling conclusion to a tale of magic, love, and the enduring spirit of a Water Witch Queen.
A fascinating novel “The Way of the Water” is the second part of the fantasy story penned by Toni Cabell. I´m very fond of the saga and I loved this second part. The king’s coronation is taking place in Toresz and a bunch of people are travelling to be part of the ceremony. In the meanwhile, arrangements are made that change Rhees and Solace’s destiny. There is a bit of everything in this story, I liked the fusion of fantasy with historical details and realm´s traditions. The way the story is told is very engaging, letting readers feel part of the characters’ lives and decisions. There are unexpected twists that spice the plot and the romance inside it. It’s fascinating! I highly recommend it!
A emotional ending for this duology. The war is finally over, Rhees and Solace are living together in the palace when a terrible news reaches them. There marriage isn't valid and Rhees is betrothed to the fiance of he late brother, Princess MaudeLyn. Forced to leave the palace, Solace begins her journey back home. But when trouble rises in the kingdom, the Queen of the People can't turn her back on them.
I really enjoyed this book. The insights in Lace's mind and her personal growth was beautifully written. I laughed and cried with the characters. And even though it was a little too fast, the ending let me satisfied.
The Way of Water is the second delivery of the saga, written by Toni Cabell. I do recommend reading the first book, as the story continues and there's key information to know in order to fully grasp the story. The novel continues the romantic story of Solace and Rhees, who are about to get married and rule the kingdom. But it won´t be as easy as it sounds...
I think the narrative, along with the characters, has grown a lot from the previous book. The author built a deeper and more complex story, keeping the reader hooked until the last pages.
Overall, a book destined for the reader who enjoys romantic stories with a magic twist.
The Wishing Shelf Book Awards 1st January 2024 TITLE: THE WAY OF WATER, Water Witch – Book Two AUTHOR: TONI CABELL Star Rating: 4
‘A fantasy fest of smart plotting, suspense, and cunning and courageous characters. Highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW I remember enjoying the first book in this set, The Lightness of Water, a year or so ago. It was strongly plotted with excellent pacing, and a protagonist (Solace) worth rooting for. So I happily settled down with book two, The Way of Water. Now, I think it’s important to say two things – firstly, The Lightness of Water is better; not a lot better but, still, it is. Not surprising as it won The Wishing Shelf Award last year. And, secondly, although you could dive into The Way of Water first, I wouldn’t recommend it. I find it’s always best with complex fantasy novels, to start with the first book, and keep going from there. So, what’s it about? Well, in a nutshell, it’s the story of Solace who’s a bit of a whizz with ‘all things water’! A rather handy skill, I must say. Rhees, her husband, is soon to be coronated King of Toresz, but MaudeLyn, Crown Princess of Censarra, soon puts a spanner in the works when she turns up insisting she and Rhees are betrothed. What follows is a fast-paced adventure as Solace is forced to choose a path – return home or fight for her new king and country. I must say, The Lightness of Water is very good. I know Toni Cabell’s work well having also enjoyed Lady Apprentice, so I expected this latest novel to be well-plotted with plenty of twists and turns, a ton of suspense and (she’s particularly good at this) compelling characters arcs. And that’s what I got. This author, it seems, knows her fantasy-loving, romance-loving readers well, and she’s determined to give them what they want. So, if you happen to be on the hunt for a fantasy adventure filled with memorable characters, this book is for you. Admittedly, it didn’t feel as ‘original’ as the first but, as a second book, it’s strong. But I do suggest you check out The Lightness of Water first. Why wouldn’t you!? It’s a FAB first novel. Then, upon finishing that, you can dive into book two. All I want to know now is when is book three going to turn up. PS I just spotted there’s an accompanying novella entitled Healer to the King which is set before The Lightness of Water; I think I’ll check that out next. 😊 ‘Wishing Shelf’ Book Review www.thewsa.co.uk

Readers’ Comments “I enjoyed the first book A LOT. This is almost as good, but I felt it was slower. I liked the character – Solace is the best – and I liked how unpredictable it was.” Girl, aged 15 “The historical ‘kings and queens’ setting is cool. Also, I liked how much the plot twisted. There is an adventure and there is romance; if you enjoy that, you’ll like this book. I never got to read the first book, but it didn’t seem to matter.” Girl, aged 15 “This is a romance/fantasy with a strong, resilient protagonist. It start off with news that the king must wed another woman. Solace must then decide her future as a Water Witch. There’s politics in it and plenty of suspense, mostly in the second half.” Girl, aged 15 “Complex in parts, I think it’s important to read the first book first. It will help you get to know the setting, characters, and politics.” Boy, aged 15 “Exciting plot, lots of character development of the MC. Enjoyed it. Fantasy/romance/drama fans will enjoy it the most.” Girl, aged 14
To Sum It Up: ‘A well-written fantasy romance with a strong, easy to root for, protagonist.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
This sequel was filled with unexpected twists and turns! While I missed the romance from the first book, I still enjoyed the continuation of Rhees and Solace's story. I loved learning more about the people and culture of Toresz! My favorite part was when Solace met with a group of gifted women like herself. I won't tell you anymore because I don't want to give anything away!

The Way of Water is a captivating tale of love, duty, and unexpected twists set against the landscape of a kingdom in transition. From the moment Crown Princess MaudeLyn of Censarra barges into the palace with her startling claim, the story takes off on a whirlwind of political intrigue and personal turmoil. The author masterfully creates and introduces characters and cultures into the plot, drawing readers into a world where every decision carries weighty consequences. I loved the book and I think that the best aspect of it is how the characters, very believable and empathic, interact with each other. The dynamics between them are intricately layered, with alliances shifting and secrets unravelling as the story progresses. Another thing that I enjoyed a lot was the pacing of the story. It is brisk, with each chapter building upon the last, keeping me eagerly turning pages to uncover the next twist or revelation. This book is perfect for lovers of fantasy and romance. I highly recommend it.
Solace is looking forward to spending time again with her husband Rhees and his coronation. After all the excitement of the previous book, their happy ever after is well deserved. However, a foreign princess pops up and claims by law Rhees must marry her. The confusion and disenchantment leads Solace to leave and head home. But the people will not allow her to forget all she did and sacrificed for them. Will the happy ever after come true after all? Will Solace's ex swoop in to save her heart? A great and fantastic continuation from the first book. I was looking forward to reading this book and I wasn't disappointed.
In this second book of the Water Witch series, author Toni Cabell really unfolds her wonderful pen with a brilliant description of fantasy scenes, characters development and a masterfully crafted plot of mystery, adventure and romance. The kingdom of Toresz is the fantastic location where “The Way of Water” takes place and where love and battles are mixed to get a great execution of this saga. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop as I wanted to know how the story would evolve and what would happen next. All in all, I really recommend this series, and this book in particular, to all readers who enjoy engaging and immersive stories.
What’s an amazing continuation to the water witch series. This very snobby princess and her brother come in after Solace and Rhees have won back their kingdom to start changing and doing things for the better and making water available for everyone and challenge the foundation of their marriage and when it is found lacking, the world is flipped on its end! Solace and Rhees are faced with some critical decisions. This was an amazing second book just as good as the first I am absolutely going to get the third one.
Toni Cabell has once again blown me away with her immense talent in The Way of Water, delivering the conclusion to an unforgettable, soul-stirring duology. I am immensely grateful for this author's brilliant work. Witnessing a level of writing talent this great is a genuine gift, and both books in the Water Witch series have been an absolute, unadulterated joy to read. It is the rare, deeply immersive type of storytelling where you completely lose yourself in the pages, entirely unaware of the time slipping away.
Just like its predecessor, this phenomenal sequel places the protagonist, Solace, at the center of a storm, forcing her to face unimaginable trials right from the start. As she navigates intense pain, Cabell once again grants readers intimate access to her inner world during her darkest moments. Throughout every trial, she responds with compassion, humility, and unwavering courage. This sequel beautifully expands her character, revealing Solace as both a capable leader and a fierce fighter who, even at her emotionally weakest, refuses to let the harsh opinions of others alter her identity. She embodies a true servant's heart, consistently placing the needs of others above her own and offering unconditional kindness to a world that often stands in direct opposition to her, which is exactly why she remains one of my absolute favourite protagonists of all time. Beyond Solace, the companions who walk alongside her offer an equally inspiring impact. They serve as a stirring testament to perseverance, choosing integrity over ease even when the road becomes treacherous. Refusing to grow weary in doing good, even when confronted with facing life-threatening trials, these characters provide a beautiful, resonant reminder of what it truly means to live out faith in a compromised world.
The plot itself is nothing short of spectacular, executing massive shocks and steering the reader through an intense spectrum of emotions, as well as expertly continuing the subtle Davidic narrative and scriptural parallels established in the first book. Furthermore, the narrative's thematic depth and nuanced characterizations provide rich material for higher education or book club discussions. By connecting to broader personal and societal lessons, the story leaves an impact that extends far beyond the final page.
Long after finishing the book, I found myself still completely captivated, imagining the future of these characters and the world they inhabit. It is the highest testament to a writer's gift when their creation lingers so deeply in the mind of the reader. Ultimately, Toni Cabell has crafted a rare masterpiece that I will personally revisit again and again, and one that I recommend without hesitation to anyone seeking a substantive, highly compelling reading experience.
Ugh this book! It made me so mad at first, even though I knew I would end up loving it! As expected it was amazing! It had a bit of everything action, adventure, emotion, romance. Oh and the end, perfection!
I love the characters in this story! Solace is wise and strong for her age. I love Rhys even if he is a grump and overemotional at times. There is an amazing cast of side characters including guards, monks, friends, and civilians in the kingdom.... and of course there are horses.
I really don't know what to say because I don't want to spoil anything. This is a great Romantasy Duology for both Teens and Adults!
The Way of Water mainly takes place in Toresz, a beautiful kingdom in many respects, but one in which danger lurks around every turn. The second installment in the Water Witch series, this one follows Crown Princess MaudeLyn of Censarra, as well as the star-crossed Rhees and talented Solace.
Solace’s fledgling powers make her a target of arcane forces, but she would almost rather forego fighting and return to a humble life at her father’s house. When Rhees runs into trouble, though, the Water Witch decides she can’t stand idly by, and she enters the fray. This is the catalyst that leads to a series of wild adventures that will test the loyalties of the trio of protagonists.
This is a young adult novel that’s imaginative, complex, and surprisingly layered. Those who are new to this series will likely rush to find the other installments after being introduced to this inventive and thrilling universe.
The Way of Water is the second installment of this sequel. In it, we witness how the peace and freedom achieved by defeating the enemy in the first book are threatened by problems that arise on several fronts, separating our brave protagonists, Rhees and Solace. Author Cabell weaves an intricate and exciting plot, full of unexpected twists and moments of great tension that keep the reader on the edge of their seat on every page. He manages to make you “see” and feel what is happening in the story.
I can only say that I totally recommend it. You will find a very well developed and told fantasy adventure, with unforgettable characters and a captivating plot. Have I already said that I recommend it? I must confess that Toni Cabell has become one of my reference authors with this second work that I read by him.
As soon as I finished the first book in this duet, I had to dive right back in and see what was in store next for Rhees and Solace, and book two did not disappoint! Rhees has just reclaimed the crown of his kingdom and he and Solace are ready to start their lives as king and queen, when a visiting king and his sister arrive with shocking news… due to a treaty signed years ago with Rhees’s brother, Rhees and the king’s sister are technically bethrothed.
I do love a story with good juicy drama, and The Way of Water had it in spades! Solace continues to be fierce and indomitable, Rhees is stubborn but the sort of Aragorn-esque rebel underdog who will one day lead his repressed kingdom to greatness. The troublemakers are delightfully irksome. I loved this from start to finish and can’t wait to read my next book by Toni Cabell! 5/5 stars.
Toni does a wonderful job of pulling our heart out and crushing it as we must watch Solace and Rhees part. This book follows Solace as she navigates where to go now, trying to get as far away from Princess MaudeLyn and Rhees. She must decide whether she stays with the people who have labeled her their Water Witch Queen. Or does she go back home to her father? Her choice gets even harder when she realizes she has a “stowaway” someone she will do everything and anything she can to protect.
I love Lisa’s narrations and the narration of this story was well done. She doesn’t just read the story she pulls the listener in and helps the author's writing come alive.
"The Way of Water" by Toni Cabell is a captivating continuation of the Water Witch series that doesn't disappoint. The skillful storytelling draws you in from the very first page and keeps you hooked until the end. As the characters navigate the treacherous landscape of Toresz, facing challenges both internal and external, you can't help but be swept away by the drama and intrigue. The blend of fantasy, adventure, and a touch of romance creates a compelling narrative that leaves you eagerly turning pages to see what happens next. If you're a fan of fantasy novels with strong characters and intricate plots, this book is a must-read.
I enjoyed the first book with it unique magic of water dowsers in a drought stricken land. The wicked king is stealing water rights and selling water back to the dying people. The nephew to the King (our hero) is a librarian who is raising a rebellion on the side. This book is set in the same place with many of the same characters but bears little resemblance to the action and adventure of the first.
The tale of Solace, Water Witch of Toresz, and King Rhees continues. Instead of life together, they have to separate due to missing signature. Solace comes to a crossroad and decides not to leave Toresz. The people's choice, Solace leads the fight to finally rid the country of Neuss. Solace and Rhees can finally live an enchanted life. Very enjoyable, fun book.
A great second installment of a great series. The character development and plot twists were great and keep you on your toes throughout the whole book! It was great to see many old, lived characters from the first book as well as many great new characters.
Content: -spice: none -swearing: 3 words that I noticed -battles resulting in death/injury, loss of loved ones -implied, attempted SA(no details other that minor injury)
I enjoyed this YA fantasy book. It contains all the elements such as Romance, Fantasy, adventure, Strong FMC wanted in a fantasy novel. This is the story of how Solace and Rhees have been divided by a power-hungry princess claiming rights to be married to the king, thus separating Solace and Rhees. This is the story of how the endure and try to find their way back to each other.
The ending was pretty good. The chase after the old king was interesting and the reuniting of the current king with his Queen was great. People were lost, as with any war. But the kingdom was saved and life goes on.
This duet had an interesting magic system and I loved all the characters as they worked well together. Story gives vibes of found family as they are close knit and a surprise pregnancy . The politics and power are the focal of this half but has a happy ending
