Getting into the Game by Judith E. Greenberg is a fantastic nonfiction book that describes the role women played in shaping the sports that are well-known today. A long time ago, women were forbidden from doing any of the men’s jobs such as farming, playing sports, and being in charge of their family. Some women stood up for what they believed was right and fair. They truly believed that women should be able to participate in the sports men play and their daily activities. The main message that the author conveyed was that no matter if you are a girl, we all have equal rights and we should be able to participate in the same activities as men. Women should be treated equally and be allowed to play in sports if that is what they desire to do. Women’s rights were very limited years ago. Their main jobs were to clean the house and take care of the kids while the man of the house went farming or worked. At the first Olympics held in 1896, women were only allowed to come support and cheer, but not compete. Eventually, they became frustrated and believed that these rules were not fair. Women started getting involved in making up their own sports that were very similar to the men’s games such as a foot game that is now referred to as soccer. They also got the idea to start up a women’s baseball team. “A group of girls from Vassar, once again, were not content to watch men playing the game of baseball but wanted to play themselves. Thus women’s baseball began” (32). Women wanted to have a sort of independence and did not want to be treated unfairly. In this story, readers get a feel for what is was like to not be treated equally. Greenberg does an outstanding job of explaining how “fair play” should be enforced. I would definitely recommend this book to readers of all ages because it gives a lot of background information about all different sports and the role women played in shaping them today. Women were not treated equally and decided to do something about it. They started getting scholarships to play for college teams and eventually were allowed to compete in the Olympic Games. Greenberg is an amazing author and wrote this incredible book teaching all of us readers a very important lesson: No matter if you are a girl or boy, we should be treated the same way and women are just as capable of doing things that men can do. Getting into the Game has an amazing storyline and I would read it many more times. It is by far one of my favorite non-fiction books.
